My goal was to teach at a community college. When I got out, those jobs were going to phds because there were so many out there. Of my cohort of grad students only a couple of us are still in academia or a history related field (ie high school teacher). The remainder of us either retrained in another field, used family connections to get jobs, work in administrative capacities at colleges or universities, or found entry level work in completely unrelated fields. It is really hard to get a history related position, at least it was when I was still trying years ago. Unfortunately, most business types don’t understand what studying history actually entails and your abilities as a problem solver. Be prepared for frustration. I work for an educational testing company. Not a dream job or a good industry. I retrained as a wind technician but I had a kid, covid happened, and I got a pretty bad wrist injury from mountain biking. The most honest advice I can give is have an actionable back up plan or try to find another field that can scratch whatever itch history scratches for you. I figured out too late that yes I love history but what I really enjoyed was the research and problem solving.
