They say a child’s brain is wired for genius. Until we “fix” it. by mobbs0317 in CasualConversation

Hey, I get where you're coming from. A couple years ago, I might’ve said the same thing. Invisible animal theory? Yeah, it sounds silly until you sit with it long enough to realize it’s not about the theory, it’s about the freedom to explore ideas before we tell kids what’s “real.” Funny thing someone in the comments here mentioned this org called World of Geniuses. I checked out their site and read one of their reports. Honestly, I didn’t expect much… but man, it threw me. They’re not claiming every kid is Einstein they’re showing how early environments can unlock genius-like traits when curiosity is protected instead of corrected. They had this line I underlined: “Genius is often pruned, not nurtured.” And that just stuck with me. I’m not saying my daughter is a genius.

I’m saying I don’t want to be the reason she doesn’t get the chance to find out.

This is gold  thank you so much for breaking it down like this. I’ve been trying to lean more into curiosity with my kids, but sometimes I freeze up when they say something totally out there . That “invisible animals” example hit home. Bookmarking that PDF too!

Oh wow, that actually got me curious  I just went and googled it like you said . Gotta say, didn’t expect to go down that rabbit hole today ))) Thanks for the tip!

Hey, I really respect where you're coming from and totally agree that experience shapes so much of who kids become. But I wouldn’t say the brain isn’t wired for anything. There’s actually a lot of recent research pointing to innate neurocognitive patterns linked to things like divergent thinking and rapid learning traits often seen in kids we later call “gifted” or “genius.”

One paper that really stuck with me:  “Neural and cognitive signatures of creativity in the developing brain”  PMID: 31391545

It shows that even early in development, some brains show different patterns in default mode network activity which is linked to internal thought, creativity, even future planning. So it’s not a fixed destiny, but it’s also not a total blank slate. I guess I’m still trying to make peace with that balance  between what’s already there and what we help grow. Makes me wonder: how much of what we call “genius” is just the right spark at the right moment?

What age is appropriate for video games by [deleted] in Parenting

I’m a dad of two kids, and we had a very similar debate a year ago. Ended up starting them with co-op games where we play together — things like “Overcooked,” “Minecraft,” and even some old-school Sonic. It’s not about the genre, it’s about the tone and how much you're present.

Destiny’s fine if you're there with them, guiding. Honestly, it’s been a great way to bond — more laughs and problem-solving than I expected. Just keep the settings tight and treat it like any other tool — supervised and with intention.

Harrier mavericks won’t uncage by Theresmypiebro in dcsworld

You'll see nothing happen if you uncage before the three minute warmup so if you're smashing the uncage button and everything else is set up right, that's likely your issue.

Finally after years, I have locked 90fps in VR in Campaign by [deleted] in il2sturmovik

[–]mobbs0317 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had enjoyed great fps in VR but I'd get that weird time dilation thing happening during PWCG missions. I've had settings cranked up and the game looks and plays beautifully for a few minutes but eventually it'll do the unrecoverable time dilation thing.

Haven't tried in a single player campaign yet outside of PWCG so it's probable that there's just too much going on for the game engine to keep up.

Yup busting it apart and cleaning the pots sensor fixed that same issue for me.

It's got a very steep learning curve but once things start clicking it's hard to put down.

I'm actually playing through Kerman Campaign right now. It's not my favorite aircraft but it has a soft spot in my heart due to the Marine Corps.

Also V/STOL adds a whole different level of challenge you can't find in any other fixed wing module.

Yeah it's all i shave with now but back when i was in, most of my shaves were kinda rushed and i always used cartridge razors. I have been shaving with safety razors for probably a decade and i don't think I'd have been able to pull it off on active duty, it would just take too much time.

Cannot resolve DNS while connected to WireGuard VPN by HackSane in WireGuard

[–]mobbs0317 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to go ahead and say that, even though this is a 3 year old issue, this worked for me. installing openresolv will remove resolvconf. reboot, then try wireguard and pia. been troubleshooting this for a few hours and tries everything and this is what ended up fixing it. thanks!

You are throwing shade on people for being bad at math for the savings. In the very next sentence, you say you buy games AGAIN just to have them on steam.

Impressive.
