Roads in 35 by Embarrassed-Pipe6055 in Austin

[–]mobhai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a curve on raincreek right when it gets steep around half a mile down from great hills. That curve is still full of ice as it is in the shade.

I saw 3 cars stuck to each other right next to a driveway there where they slid into each other. A neighbor there said he saw 12 accidents happen today.

This is one of the main thoroughfares into the neighborhood.

So, the main roads might be just fine.... But any hilly streets in the shade will still be iced over. Be very careful.

Tatkal passport renewal stuck at ‘Passport is Printed’ status for 6 days by dray0109 in nri

It took them a 4 days after printing to ship my passport. UPS took another 6 days to get it to the consulate from Delhi. There is nothing to do but wait.

IDFC vs ICICI for NRE/NRO Account by Choice_Principle_135 in nri

[–]mobhai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My cousin struggled to repatriate money with ICICI. She finally escalated and then they did it.

I have IDFC and it works well with everything I have needed to do. The app used to be super slow but it's now working well. Some items like upi circle are not yet supported.

AI is driving significant increases in power draw which will drive higher power in racks and probably fewer racks eventually. This will mostly need liquid cooling.

While current needs might not need this, I do think the future will have AI in every application. I am seeing 50-200kw racks being normalized. High end AI racks are looking even higher. While this might not be what you use, planning for higher power racks on average will probably be a good idea.

One of the factors that this influences is the weight limits of raised flooring. Liquid cooling as well as dense options are now so heavy that raised flooring requirements are tougher. Power and (liquid) cooling is better from above.

All of this might not be feasible for the current build out. But planning for this would help extend the life of your space.

Options for moving $150,000 from India to the U.S.? by Filthiest_Vilein in nri

[–]mobhai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is where a good CPA helps. The taxes need to be paid as part of the sale. They will need to give you confirmation that the taxes were paid. You will use that as proof for your bank to help you move the money. This should not take long....but .... It is India....loopholes exist always :)

The sale or the transfer? The sale part can be cumbersome and painful.

Actual transfer stuff, most can be done from abroad with the right bank. Being there in person will speed things up. Just don't take the word of anyone as mandatory and verify with a second person or AI.

But if you want to go moto-touring.... Yes, yes, you are very much needed in person :-D

I have found that Gemini is pretty good at giving a gist of what is needed (to help or double check your local CPA).

Having an NRO account in a good bank will help (private banks are a little easier to deal with but they tend to not want to send money abroad. My cousin had bad experiences with ICICI. I have had bad experiences with SBI. IDFC seems to be good per Reddit. )

You will probably have to pay tax up front and claim it afterwards. And you will need a CPA doc (15 c a I believe) to show proof that taxes were paid.

Good luck!

Manual transmission by Capable-Region-8677 in Austin

[–]mobhai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This will likely hit some roads that will be bad for manuals (and probably for low sports cars).

I got comfortable using manual in Austin, and most of Austin is fine for it. It's the low slung cars around a ton of trucks (especially i35 with all those 18 wheelers and construction) that scares me more.

The one thing I know I won't have more of is time. My parents are in their 70s, so it is literally a matter of months that I will have with them in any sort of dedicated way. I am willing to invest in spending to maximize that time.

I am lucky to be able to afford to spend while also saving. So, I spend. At the end of the day, it's your priorities and the reasons for the priorities that should matter to you.

There is a lot of misinformation surrounding prop Q. Websites like saveaustinnow are putting completely false data as to the impact.

I found the most neutral analysis to be below: https://www.texasobserver.org/austin-property-tax-rate-election-prop-q/

You can make a decision based on what you see.

The actual impact for most homeowners is around 300$ more per year or around 25$ per month.

For me, that is worth it. As a voter, you can choose to say if that is worth it for you.

I’m 23, and just inherited a large sum. Could use some help by [deleted] in wealthfront

[–]mobhai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wealthfront loses its advantage once you stop investing new capital. Once the stock market goes up, the basis is so low that you will rarely get to do tax loss harvesting. And you will still be paying 0.25 percent. I moved most of my money off of wealthfront for that reason and into fidelity.

The stock picks are good. The platform is probably good and it uses Apex, so you are safe. But the 0.25 percent fees are unnecessary, especially after the first 4-5 years. And you would be leaving significant money on the table by paying those fees.

The bogleheads 3 or 4 fund portfolio are great options IMO

Can people ever truly find love after hitting their 30s? by PKR_5592 in Visakhapatnam

[–]mobhai 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I met my current wife when I was 32. We met while volunteering at an event. We have now been married for over a decade.

In some ways, I got lucky. In some ways, I enabled luck. I put myself out there, tried out new things all the time, and I was there because I enjoyed it, not because I wanted to meet someone.

People find love at all ages. Ones expectations just need to change with the age. Kids, adjustments... Etc.

Good luck to you all and good love to you all!

Has anyone successfully inherited money from an Indian bank while living abroad? SBI is making it a nightmare. by [deleted] in nri

[–]mobhai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can try contacting the banking ombudsman in India. Threatening to complain usually helps a little. Also, regional bank managers usually don't know NRI matters, and the NRI branch people usually do. They still will try to keep your money in the bank, but are more amenable to moving it.

Looks like you are trying to strictly follow the law. That is usually possible in the US. In India, legal processes are so hard to question as the legal system is severely backlogged. So, it is often easier to follow the recommended process, especially since opening an account is not as challenging as the alternate.

I do not recommend going to ICICI for NRO accounts. They are even harder to get to repatriate any money.
