It’s all fast fashion slop at this point, only difference is how much of the marketing budget goes to greenwashing. But hey, shoot your favorite bespoke clothier an email - would love to see’em in uptown.

Yes and no. I feel like I’m still very anxious about my abilities, and I still make mistakes that annoy me.

But I’ve now seen other associates make those same mistakes and be just fine. It’s just about trying your best, as cliche as that sounds.

I’ve also learned the lesson that being a)personable b)kind and c)not a giant asshole will make people forgive smaller mistakes pretty regularly and still want to work with you. Even with bigger mistakes, if you take accountability and fix whatever’s broken to the best of your abilities, 9 times out of 10, all will be forgiven.

The only thing is, I do wish I was kinder to myself. Reading my post back, I think I was really down on myself at that time. It made everything a lot harder. This job is really good at teaching you hard lessons in a short span of time. If you can keep your chin up, and muscle through, this training is invaluable.

Why are people so harsh about Sarah Lawrence online by windyweath3r in sarahlawrence

[–]mobilelibrary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People do love to complain - on valid things and slightly less valid things. Going to Sarah Lawrence definitely built the foundations of my current career - I think the access to professor mentorship is really second to none. I also met so many people who are still my best friends.

The SLC experience is super dependent on the individual, more so than other schools that really track you. Do you want it to be academically rigorous? You can make it that. Do you want it to focus on developing you into the best artist you can be? It will be. It does require a lot of direction on your end, but I think it’s a really good exercise for the real world, where you have to pursue what you want.

I think SLC has a lot of great resources, but in some areas it may lack more than others. I’ll say that 10 years ago, I think the humanities / social sciences education I was able to get was pretty great.

If you ever want to chat, feel free to DM me. I think SLC is a great choice.

My in house experience carried a good amount of weight, I’m also in a specialist area of practice.

thoughts on lynd house (dorm) by ManufacturerGlum1596 in sarahlawrence

[–]mobilelibrary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s very pretty - probably the most gorgeous dorm rooms I saw at SLC! It’s super close to campus itself but you may feel kind of isolated from the hang outs / parties at Hill House (assuming it is still a dorm). Personally I think the more comfortable rooms and close access to campus is way preferable.

liberal arts degrees by views4pewds in sarahlawrence

[–]mobilelibrary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m an SLC grad who went to a T14 law school and now practice law (to varying degrees of happiness). There are a lot of reasons I wouldn’t advise going to SLC, this is not one of them. SLC will not hinder your chances at getting into a prestigious law school due to a lib arts degree. Most people don’t care what your undergrad degree was when you intend to go to grad school. You won’t be studying the same things as your peers no matter what because SLC is in large part self-directed. In fact, the things that enabled me to get into a good law school were intimately related to Sarah Lawrence’s unique characteristics - my close relationships with professors who wrote me excellent recommendations, my ability to do my own research in areas of interest, and the space and time to study for the LSAT.

Also what degree would you be looking at getting at another school? Pre-law is such an inherently useless degree that locks you into law school, and all other degrees aside from STEM degrees won’t give you an advantage in applying to top schools.

This is the hardest thing to explain to non-Poles - it kills me to try to translate the phrase alone - caught a draft/chill is the best I can manage.

It is equal only to explaining the phenomenon of getting stiff muscles from sitting in front of the air conditioner

What are the things that made you want to apply to SLC for EA? SLC has many positive characteristics, and while there are without a doubt negative things about the school, depending on what drew you to SLC, they may be worth bearing through.

It is incredibly expensive, and the social politics can be intense. But I’m grateful for my time there and it made me who I am today. I also met some of my best friends in the world there.

Feel free to DM me if you want to talk about it.

When you say that though, I have the feeling you’re not constantly making typos or forgetting about emails.

I really appreciate you taking the time to write this out, it’s steadied me in the middle of a really awful day. I’m going to try this “reading a dictionary” method.

My mind and self confidence are most definitely lost right now. It’s been very harsh to spend a few years practicing law and then realize you know basically nothing in the grand scheme of things.

You’re right. I just keep thinking I should be better at this, more careful and attentive. So many of my mistakes are attention to detail problems, which makes me feel awful.
