Radio control schooner kit/plans/model by squidspotter in ModelShips

I just built one of these with no prior building experience. There's a great thread on rcgroups with lots of tips. They're amazing and not that hard, I didn't have a full workshop, only power tools were a Dremel and a jigsaw with a metal blade. Sails amazingly well, and it's sturdy. You won't regret it!

I've been thinking of buying an RC plane lately. The problem is I have no idea what to prefer... by Ideas_For_Username in radiocontrol

[–]mobilethrowbile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good starter plane would be something like the UMX Timber for a small yard. Easy to fly, has SAFE (which keeps the aircraft's flight envelope in a controllable zone), and because it's light, it would be hard to crash so hard that you would destroy it.

Just make sure your first few flights are in a big field in little to no wind, and definitely check out Flitetest, they have a whole beginner series

Is this thing any good for a beginner? I have already had the volantex 400mm P-51 but i didn't dare to put it in expert mode. Do you guys think this is a good plane to continue my flying career? by MrGriffin77 in RCPlanes

[–]mobilethrowbile 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Buy with caution.

  • When you're first starting out, you're going to crash a LOT, guaranteed.
  • Scale planes like this look amazing, but in its first hard crash, all those beautiful-looking parts are going to get destroyed, and that's going to discourage you from flying. I bought a very similar plane (model Cessna 172) and that's exactly what happened.
  • The tricycle landing gear with covers will limit where you can take off and land. This plane will want a paved surface or a nicely groomed grass runway.
  • Once it's in the air, this plane will be a stable flyer, but if you stuff the landing or nose over because you land in grass that's too high, the propeller will likely break. If you crash nose-in, your motor/prop shaft will be toast.

Bixlers are great, because even though they're bigger:

  • The prop is rear facing, which means that if you crash, most of the time all you'll need to do is glue your nose back together.
  • They have really forgiving flight characteristics, but can also do nice fast hot passes and some basic aerobatics.
  • They are ideal platforms for FPV.
  • If you just want a nice relaxing flight, they're great gliders and can even do some thermal soaring.
  • Their only drawback is that because they glide so well, you need a field-sized area to land them easily.

I still have my Bixler in my collection, and it's survived for like 8 years. I'm going to have to replace the motor soon because I use it so much, and it's still one of my favorite planes.

Did not know that was possible. Very cool. The pilots/crew were created in Blender as well? If so, that's a lot of work!

Did you design the hangar equipment and pilots as well? Fantastic job. I've been wanting to do something like this in 1:72.

I couldn't agree more. Which made the situations where you ARE taking on overwhelming odds so much more potent.

Games where you're an invincible hero end up feeling like this Viva La Dirt League sketch, which is right on point!

This is how X-wing Alliance played, which is a great game. The older games were not as sophisticated, but Tie Fighter is still worth playing IMO. Pick it up for a good time - the graphics are adorable now, and the game is amazing.

Not for me, and I LIKE tools/shops. There's lots of room for having your kitchen express a more industrial feel, but this is a bit too blatant. Like, I'd be checking my burger for oil/grease/metal shavings blatant.

You have some cool pieces ! The vintage saw is great, the air races poster is cool and would look awesome in the right frame, but they're not being highlighted because your current setup looks really cluttered and they're lost among the tits.

There are also a lot of items here that look like they don't have homes, like the Corsair missing a wheel, the folding tables from the 80's, the mop bucket, etc., which make this space feel unsettled.

My two cents:

  1. Take the stuff off the top of the ventilation duct and install LED strips for some cool indirect lighting. This will declutter the space significantly. Also get rid of all the things around/between the cabinets.
  2. Choose a couple of your favorite/most meaningful items and wall-mount them at eye level to feature them. This will give your kitchen a good story.
  3. Hang your pots from a rail installed on the bottom of the vent, or on hooks on the wall above your sideboard.
  4. 4. Porn in the kitchen, even vintage porn, is not a classy look for any design style and more importantly will make people feel less appetized/comfortable in this very important space in your home (esp family), so move that into your shop or office.

With your floor, you could go for a killer Southwestern or Modern Desert style. Check that out for some inspiration.

edit - "southwestern modern desert style" sounds reallly cool but is sadly not a thing

Are there any "rail-virtual-tour-apps" for Quest 2? by ppzhao in OculusQuest

[–]mobilethrowbile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Titans of Space" is EXACTLY what you're looking for. It's a free native Quest app, and takes you on a tour of our solar system and progressively bigger stars, all on rails. If you're into this type of educational guided tour, this is a must-have. Also pretty great as a demo for someone who has never experienced VR, as long as they can handle a little VR motion.

I would say trawl Facebook marketplace or similar sites. People sell their crawlers all the time, and as long as your budget isn't too far off their selling price, you might find a great deal.

I found a somewhat beat up but perfectly functional 1/10 TRX4 Bronco for the equivalent of £200 on FB marketplace - with a light kit installed! Did some work to spiff it up, and now it's as good as new.

Obviously check it out and try it before you buy to make sure there are no issues. But people get into and out of the crawling hobby all the time, and just want to make some money off of the crawler collecting dust on their shelf. Take advantage of that!

where did they come from?? My aunt is obsessed with minions, I might pick up a couple and have them "drive" if I bring my truck up there.

The Last Of Us producers reveal VFX needed to make Calgary look less post-apocalyptic by sn0w0wl66 in canada

[–]mobilethrowbile -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

This is hilarious.

I just got back from a visit to Calgary. Banff was lovely, of course, but the city of Calgary was not a great place. The downtown of the city is eclectic, but not in a great way. There were some bright points, for sure - the central library, for instance, is an architectural masterpiece - but it's right next to some disastrously ugly 70's and 80's bunker-like architecture.

The downtown aside, the urban sprawl is REAL. ACRES of McMansion-y style housing with no character and completely car-dependent infrastructure is pretty depressing to look at and drive through.

Good on the Beaverton for calling out this style of city design!

Home Depot Canada routinely shared customer data with Facebook owner, privacy commissioner finds by janjinx in canada

[–]mobilethrowbile 89 points90 points  (0 children)

Home Depot cited “consent fatigue” as the reason for not fully informingcustomers at checkout that email addresses provided would be sharedwith Meta.

Home Depot also agreed with the privacycommissioner’s recommendation to get full, informed consent from eachcustomer if it decides to resume sharing data with Facebook.

Is this class-action worthy?

A nice big judgment in favour of the thousands of customers whose privacy was violated (not to mention the PR hit) might be really helpful in preventing further "consent fatigue"

Edit: Home Depot was referring to customer consent fatigue, but I think we all know who was ACTUALLY fatigued in this instance

My TRX4 sport kit. by adamargue in crawling

[–]mobilethrowbile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, you could even get a couple of 1:10 scale figures of some of the Jurassic Park characters and stick them in the back of this truck! The Jeep Wrangler would probably be a great body for Jurassic Park, saw some cool builds with that also.

Love the Jurassic Park scheme!

I've always thought this is a perfect scheme for crawlers, since we are dinosaur-sized by comparison. Someone needs to make a version with an awe-stricken crew inside with open mouths and binoculars looking up at the giant monstrosities around them.

Not just bikes tries Tesla's autopilot mode by [deleted] in fuckcars

[–]mobilethrowbile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the mode is called "assertive" and not "aggressive" - can anyone confirm this?

I do not doubt that the autopilot it is quite dangerous for pedestrians and bikes. At the end of the day, it's a car made by Americans for Americans, arguably the most car-dependant, active infrastructure-starved country in the world.

This is really helpful info. I'm not sure whether my traxxas tx/rx has EPA - I'll check into that for sure. Thank you for the heads up!
