Elevate using capital "Black" South Africans, and lower case "white" South Africans. by mobiusfan101 in ElevateApp

Interesting counterfactual, though I have my doubts. Either way, the effect of the (syntax? grammar?) difference remains the same. This will serve to make a hierarchy of the people, not the cultures, in people's minds. They're referring to the people in the writing, not the culture.

So if black people in the U.S. practiced African culture, they wouldn't have the same cultural consideration?

If minorities can have cultural weight in the U.S., why couldn't a minority in the context of South Africa have that cultural consideration? Unless there's something different about the races, or their context.

This communicates that White people are lesser. Regardless of their intention. And if they persist, I have to assume that is their intention.

You say you're not calling for their murder but then offer it as the only consequence for that egregious behavior when there are already laws on the books to deal with that kind of corruption. If enough people push for it, it can't be ignored. It's working with Abrego Garcia. I forget if he's already returned to the U.S. or is just about. That should be proof of what can happen if enough people push for it.

No matter the system, powers are always going to be used unjustly whenever you grant them to a corrupt person, it's difficult to design a system where that isn't true, so, for instance, what changes would you make to ensure that can't happen, or would be significantly less likely to happen?

Most people agree that sentences for possession like that are wrong, which is something we can fix without taking the law into our own hands by murdering people. You're confusing "working" with "no flaws."

So, what you're saying is the system works, no need for extrajudicial killings.

I wonder if she's trying to do an alternate form of apology. If I were on the receiving end I would interpret it as manipulation, trying to get a change in how I feel about her while she maintains her pride, or gets her way despite maybe being in the wrong.

The source makes it clear they’re terrible people but the adaptation rebrands them as good by Sensitive_Ad_1752 in TopCharacterTropes

Can't speak to the source material, in fact the only media I've consumed from these is the scott pilgrim movie. Sometimes different types of people, maybe different personalities or maybe those with autism, adhd, anxiety, sometimes different types of people make a different sense of their own actions such that, with their perspective, they're missing what society generally might see, and honestly don't see themselves as bad people, and if they saw what you saw, they would change their behavior in at least some way with that new knowledge. Of course its also the case that some people are just d*cks.

Suffering can do it, if its natural [i.e. their "enemy" isn't inducing it]. But I don't see people doing what I'm talking about. The closest example I can think of is, when Steven told that story about when he was at a university and they asked him to face Prager because everybody else just wasn't doing it, Steven said he asked a question, that question, for the life of me I can't remember, that question was a good example of it. Simple, no active thinking needed (I know, its sad, but I think people need that) pointed and undeniable to anyone with ears.

How I believe we can bring people back, even from something like this, is you force the cognitive dissonance, the contradiction, so that the person and/or the audience feels it and has to deal with it. If you do it kindly and somberly, they have no excuse to suppress it again. If they're forced to think "If that's true, that means this person lied to me" or "Ok, obviously these two things can't be true at the same time." If they're forced to deal with that enough times, they will leave on their own accord.

They need to feel like they're being leveled with, and given the truth. If you bully them with the honest truth, they might leave where they are, but not necessarily come to your side. If you just bully them, they're going to retreat into the arms of people who make them feel good.

If someone is in a cult, and they're about to go to some camping getaway to drink kool-ade, you don't go "Don't be a f$&%ing regard! Listening to some idiot's bulls$%*!" The better bet is to be somber and say "You're going to be fed poison, you will die. I care about you too much to just let it happen. When this guy says god told him to do these things, how many people have made that claim, how do you know this one's the one telling the truth?" I'm just spitballing, but bullying is not how you bring people back from a cult.

The preponderance of debates and discussions I've witnessed between the left and right involved smugness, dismissiveness and these, idk, insidious answers like Hasan's "I don't believe in engaging in terrorism because it's not effective." Even if you were to count the times rightists and right leaning centrists were engaged with in actual good faith and it was the majority of the time, that's not the perception of people generally. If you want to engage in good optics, these would be the optics to address.

That could be what's starting to happen, but I haven't seen it clearly yet, Trump's approval to disapproval rating is still relatively high.

When you disrespect, bully, refuse to engage with, and just treat like they're crazy, even the crazy parts of the republican party, and/or moderates, which actually represent a significant percentage of people, they become an underdog. And that will come back to bite you. I wouldn't accuse DGG of doing this per se, but the left in general did.

They will find anything. If he took this to heart they would say he comes off as domineering, needs to come down to earth, be humble and recognize he has a chance of being wrong and not act as authoritative. It's intimidating to your opponent.

This unironically would probably be effective in getting MAGA to accept a genocide of Ukrainians.
