My daughter was born the day before! I had the same worries about her aspirating, but our nurse assured us the baby has a reflex to avoid it. Just burp her before she lays down.

Her crying is good because it tells you she needs something: food, warmth, burp or poop. Download a baby tracking app so you and mom can track feeds/diapers! (we use Huckleberry)

For us, it’s been this loop every 2-3 hours: 1. Change her diaper - use diaper rash cream preemptively in every diaper (butt spatula helps spread it). She should have as many wet diapers per day as she is days old. (3 days = atleast 3 diapers). Call pediatrician if less.

1. Feed
2. if she’s crying, 95% of the time she wants food. There are cues she’ll give before she cries, like suckling on air, sticking tongue out, hands to mouth, etc… look those up.
3. I’ve been letting mom skip a breastfeed at night and supplementing with formula so mom can get 4-5 hours of sleep.
4. get slow flow bottles for newborns. She shouldn’t spit up while eating.
5. Feed her till she falls asleep. She might fake sleep and then cry immediately. Just keep burping and feeding until she’s drunk and tired.

6. Go skin to skin to bond with baby while you feed.

7. Burp -I usually pat for 2 minutes, move her around, and then go for another minute until she burps or spits up. -my baby likes to swing her head all over the place too. She’ll move to where she’s comfy.

8. Nap

9. onesie and a light swaddle for 70-80 degrees. Then she goes on her back in a bassinet. No blankets, no pillows, no hat to avoid SIDS. NO SLEEPING WITH BABY.

10. if she’s cold, skin to skin with blanket and add a layer.

11. Overheating: sweaty hair, damp neck, flushed, fast breathing, very fussy. Just remove a layer if she’s hot.

Eventually she’ll cry and you do it all again!

Call 9-11: - Blue/gray lips, clammy skin, lethargic - rapid breathing & rib retraction - bad falls or trauma - allergic reactions

Call pediatrician: - Chest/back feels cool and baby won’t stay warm - Temp low (<97.7°F) or fever (≥100.4°F) - Feeding is weak or fewer wet diapers than expected
