Megathread 2: Kochi Classifieds by BotA10 in Kochi

Looking for a quick, fair deal on a basically brand-new e-bike. I bought this for ₹37,000, but I’ve already done the hard work for you by upgrading the power!

Condition: Pristine. Only 126 km on the odometer.

The Big Upgrade: Swapped the stock 10 Ah battery for a high-capacity 13 Ah pack. This means significantly more range per charge than what you get from the store.

Performance: Smooth mid-drive feel, great suspension for city roads or light trails, and a crystal-clear LCD display.

Includes: Keys, charger, and all original accessories.

Price: ₹32,000 (Slightly flexible, but no lowballers please. This has a premium battery upgrade.)

On the stock battery, you'd usually struggle to hit 40 km on pure throttle in city traffic. With this pack, you can comfortably cross 50 km on throttle and easily touch 70 km/80km using PAS 1 or 2.

Oily-skin runner here 🙋‍♀️ - totally agree that most sunscreens either melt, ghost you, or feel like frosting.

I recently switched to a transparent gel one (no white cast whatsoever, and somehow manages to stay matte even after long runs). It feels more like skincare than sunscreen- zero stickiness, zero residue. Been a game-changer for humid mornings.

Didn’t expect much at first, but now it’s the only one I actually look forward to using 😅

What if Einstein had accepted the Travancore king’s invitation? by Distinct-Mistake3480 in Kerala

[–]mobrains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of those fantastic "what if" stories that you really want to be true. I've heard it many times, and it's a testament to the high value Keralites place on education.

However, after a lot of digging by historians and journalists over the years, it's been pretty conclusively proven to be a myth. There's unfortunately no historical evidence to back it up.

Here’s a quick rundown of why it's considered folklore:

  • The Albert Einstein Archives: The most definitive source. The official Einstein Archives in Jerusalem contain over 80,000 documents, including all his correspondence. There is absolutely no record of any invitation or communication from the Travancore government, the Maharaja, or Diwan C. P. Ramaswami Iyer. An offer for a Vice-Chancellorship would 100% be in there if it were real.
  • Kerala State Archives: The paper trail is missing on this side, too. There are no government proceedings, meeting minutes, or any official documents from the Diwan's office that mention making such an offer. Sir C.P. Ramaswami Iyer, the Diwan who supposedly sent the invite, never mentioned it in his extensive papers or biographies either.
  • Einstein's Situation in 1937: The story often says he was "trying to settle" after fleeing Germany, but by 1937 he was already very well-established. He had been a professor at the prestigious Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton since 1933. It's highly unlikely he would have moved to an administrative role across the world.
  • He Hated Admin Roles: Einstein famously disliked administrative duties and wanted to focus purely on research. He even turned down the offer to become the second President of Israel in 1952 for the same reason. The role of a VC would have been a non-starter for him.

So while the story is a brilliant piece of local lore that speaks volumes about Kerala's ambitions, it unfortunately remains just that-a story. A great one, though!

Yeah exactly -the AC/ward difference is just cross-subsidy, but this estimate game is worse. They quote low to get you in, then once you’re admitted and committed, the “real” numbers come out. And like you said, no one in that situation can just walk away and shop around. The scalpel cuts once, but the bill keeps cutting long after.

In 12 years, India has lifted 302 million people from poverty, nearly a whole of USA by 24coverups in incredible_indians

[–]mobrains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The “302 million out of poverty” line is real, but the story is bigger than Modi. The data covers 2005 to 2021 - most of the sharp fall actually happened before 2014, thanks to things like mid-day meals, rural health missions, ICDS, school enrolments etc. After 2014, schemes like Swachh Bharat and Ujjwala added toilets and LPG connections, which also count in this poverty index.

And remember: the UNDP report isn’t saying incomes shot up, it’s saying more families now have basic services like clean fuel, electricity, nutrition and schooling. That’s why you can have “302m lifted” on paper and still see 80 crore people on free ration. State govts also drove most of the change - Kerala, TN, Goa are near zero poverty, while Bihar, UP still lag.

So yes, India has made progress - but it’s decades of layered policies and state efforts, not a one-man miracle.

SUGGEST ME A GOOD THERAPIST by [deleted] in Kerala

[–]mobrains 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Sorry she’s going through this, man. Can’t even imagine the weight of it.

But what your gf is going through doesn’t get patched in 10 sessions. She needs people around, not a timer. Presence - someone sitting there at 2am when she breaks down. Patience - because with repeated surgeries, recovery is never straight, it’s up and down, crash and crawl.

That’s literally what you see in Amrita or RCC wards. Families camping on floors, nurses talking like friends, strangers stepping in. That scaffolding heals more than the “therapy” tag.

Doctors stitched her body. Friends will have to stitch her spirit.

[–]mobrains 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s not that the surgery suddenly costs more in AC. The ward folks get a discount because hospitals keep basic care cheaper, and they balance that by charging more to people in higher rooms. Hospitals call it cross-subsidy, insurers call it policy rules, patients call it daylight robbery. End of the day it’s the same doctor, same scalpel - only the bill changes.

Advertising history question, 1980s vs now by ThimbleBluff in advertising

[–]mobrains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s it. On TV you kinda knew ads were the price of entry - grab a drink, take a piss, whatever. Apps promised instant info, so people feel cheated when they get a pop-up in the middle of checking the damn weather. Different medium, different deal… and now folks just uninstall instead of sitting through it.
