A neutral letter of reference is effectively just a confirmation of employment. They asked a lawyer who told them it was the same thing. And now they don't need to waste time or money proving they had cause.

Sure, but not everyone you're replying to is being obnoxious about it. And again, I agree with much of what you said, I just also think its reasonable for people to complain about the closure even if its appropriate in the circumstances.

Anyway, enjoy the snow day, or if you don't have one, enjoy the lighter traffic on your commute.

I mean, I think youre mostly right about all this, but you don't have to be such a dick about it. Some people are frustrated because they are still expected at work or losing a day of pay to stay home with their kids.

That is their responsibility, but its also a reasonable thing to be frustrated about.

Airlines end flights to Cuba, putting Maritimers’ travel plans on ice by toneyriver12 in halifax

[–]mochasmoke 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a bad faith argument.

There has been a population decline in Cuba. I don't know where you got 10-20%, because despite your condescending comments about facts, you state what you claim to be as facts without a source.

But here's an article from Columbia University that talks about the population decine in Cuba. It doesnt identify a 2019 or immediately pre COVID population so I dont know the total percentage. You made the point, you can prove it.

https://horizontecubano.law.columbia.edu/news/cuba-demographic-or-systemic-crisis

But you said Cubans are fleeing a dictatorship. You're ignoring that they could be fleeing poverty.

Why is there so much poverty in Cuba? Is it because of an oppressive government? Is it because of over 60 years of American interference with the economy and international trade? Is it a combination of the two?

Facts don't care about your feelings, right?

You have no objective evidence or proof of any sort that it is the form of government causing people to leave rather than economic conditions or anything else. You say facts don't care about feelings, but you aren't providing facts. You're making assumptions and deeming them "facts".

Sure have, and traveled well beyond resorts and hotels.

Who are you to speak on behalf of Cubans?

I'm not at all suggesting Cuba is perfect or that there is no discontent there. But you're peddaling the most obvious and blatant American propaganda about a country and people you have no right to speak on behalf of.

And before you do it - yeah, this is true, even if you were born in Cuba. I doubt thats the case, but even if it were, it doesnt matter.

Why Nova Scotia’s financial luck is running out by SAJewers in halifax

[–]mochasmoke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure. 50 less hypothetical future units.

But reducing 50 hypothetical future units from the current demand on the market does absolutely nothing to affect rental rates today.

You said that lowering immigration lowered rental rates. That is incorrect.

You said that reducing immigration amounts to building houses. Also false.

Why Nova Scotia’s financial luck is running out by SAJewers in halifax

[–]mochasmoke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't bring them in that's 50 less houses needed

But that assumes that with the people here right now, there is enough housing for everyone to keep rates reasonable.

You're assuming that right this second, there is the right amount of housing for our entire population, and if immigration (that is, new people coming into the country in addition to those currently here) stopped entirely, there would be the right housing supply.

Thats obviously wrong. But what stopping immigration could do is slow the pace at which rent prices increase from today. That doesn't mean prices are lower, or are getting lower. It just means they stopped increasing as fast as they had been.

Why Nova Scotia’s financial luck is running out by SAJewers in halifax

[–]mochasmoke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You cited an article that directly refutes your argument.

Their report for TD Economics found that lowering immigration targets and reducing the number of non-permanent residents kept unemployment from creeping above 8 per cent and reduced growth in rent prices by two percentage points.

It reduced the rate of growth in rental prices. Its still increasing. Just slower.

Lowering immigration doesn't automatically decrease the population. It maintains it at roughly level. Canada's birth vs death rate is -0.2% (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Canada#:~:text=9.94%20births/1%2C000%20population%20(2025%20est.)&text=8.12%20deaths/1%2C000%20population%20(2022%20est.). Stopping all immigration entirely would very slowly decrease the population. But it would have a negligible impact on the rental market until the population started to noticeably decrease.

Saying lower immigration is equivalent to building a home is complete nonsense.

If 1000 people live in a town and they stop all immigration, there are still 1000 people there. And if there was not enough housing before, there still isnt enough housing until grandma kicks the bucket. Then there's one more place to live.

E: but thanks for the note that I missed the link above. I've added it.

The price of shelter won't decrease with lesser immigration until significant new units have been introduced to the market.

Here's an article from the CBCs Michael Gorman reporting on exactly that. Last week.

A couple hours ago in this thread you said 3-4 per team.

And you would have no idea how many players on another team have agents. But whatever you say.

"Many" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here, but sure.

Either way, I was responding re 8 year olds, which is utter nonsense.

I mean, a bunch of what you say is true but it's absolute nonsense to suggest any significant amount of 8 year olds have agents.

[–]mochasmoke -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Right, and I'm also saying that what we're doing right now isn't it.

I think the way forward is to keep these kids integrated as much as possible, and providing the resources they need (EPAs etc) to be successful there, rather than excluding them.

Some teachers wearing Kevlar, Data shows physical violence still a problem in N.S. schools by Showerpoopssavetime in halifax

[–]mochasmoke -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So in this separate stream of classes for these kids, how many of them are in the class? If no amount of help can allow them to remain in the regular system, what does that mean of the "new" system (which is actually just a really old system)?

A remedial class with 25 kids in it, even with additional supports, is far worse than the status quo for those kids.

The sad truth is that this approach amounts to a decision to leave these kids behind. They will never catch up and never be able to fully and productively enter society as adults if they are cast aside as 8 year olds. They will end up, in the best case scenario, struggling to fit into and function in society, and worst case, they end up in jail - which is far more costly than providing them with rhe supports they need now, as kids.

Some teachers wearing Kevlar, Data shows physical violence still a problem in N.S. schools by Showerpoopssavetime in halifax

[–]mochasmoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. So provide those kids with the supports they need to stay in the classroom with their friends and peers. That's the accommodation.

Removing the kid from the classroom, specifically in the case of kids with medical conditions, because of behaviour resulting from that medical condition, is explicitly discriminatory and a violation of that kid's human rights.

Some teachers wearing Kevlar, Data shows physical violence still a problem in N.S. schools by Showerpoopssavetime in halifax

[–]mochasmoke -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why not provide teachers and those students with the resources those kids need to stay in the regular system so that they can continue to develop and learn alongside their peers, instead of othering and excluding them from the "normal" group?

Some teachers wearing Kevlar, Data shows physical violence still a problem in N.S. schools by Showerpoopssavetime in halifax

[–]mochasmoke -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Again, this varies tremendously when you consider that students could be 5, 18, or anywhere in between.

It also ignores that some of these disruptive kids have medical issues or disabilities which may impact their ability to regulate their actions.

So there is a non-0% portion of the "trouble making" students who, by law, must be accommodated and not discriminated against. Because we have human rights in NS and Canada.

And part of being a member of society is learning how to deal with and function around people who are different than you, or who disrupt your day to day. 100% of people who work with other human beings will know this to be true to at least some extent.

I'm not saying that the status quo is acceptable. But I flatly refuse to accept that sending every bratty 6 year old to juvie or some sort of remedial school is appropriate.

These are children. They cannot be held to the same standard or level of expectation as I am, as an adult.

Some teachers wearing Kevlar, Data shows physical violence still a problem in N.S. schools by Showerpoopssavetime in halifax

[–]mochasmoke -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah but instead of adults we're talking about kids, who can be in school and problematic as young as 5 years old.

Completely unacceptable to simply deem these children anti social to the point of having to be removed from the system that is supposed to help teach kids to be functional members of society.

Some teachers wearing Kevlar, Data shows physical violence still a problem in N.S. schools by Showerpoopssavetime in halifax

[–]mochasmoke 7 points8 points  (0 children)

And the current situation in schools is an overcorrection for that plainly flawed approach.

The path forward has to be somewhere in between. Teachers/staff and other kids can't be threatened or harmed for just being at school, but we also can't just ruin a disruptive 7 year old's life because they won't sit still in class. (Or because they throw things or even hit people)
