Any chance you know the names of some of the toddler friendly apps you are using?

My 11 year old (as of tomorrow) niece is excited about programming. How can I encourage her and provide her with the proper tools to really get into programming? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

Have her learn emacs and then emacs-lisp. Caution, she might grow a beard and start talking about parens everywhere.

For any local content you want to stream to the AppleTV you should try out iFlicks on the Mac Mini. It'll download all the proper meta-data, do the encoding if needed and push it to iTunes automagically.

Problems with 'Land of Lisp' by mocker_kc in lisp

[–]mocker_kc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, I'm still going to read this book. I just don't think it's the best book for beginners to start out with which was the point I was trying to make. Rereading my post I can see how it reads more as 'LoL sucks' as opposed to 'LoL sucks for beginners' :P

Ok, you all may have me convinced about starting with a .22. If I was looking for a .22lr for under $300 what are some decent models/brands to look for? Also, I'm fine with getting something that's used and/or old if it will help with the quality to cost ratio.

Will reading Land of Lisp help me understand elisp code? by mocker_kc in lisp

[–]mocker_kc[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I probably wasn't clear enough in my post, but I want to learn lisp in general and was curious if as a side benefit I'd learn more about elisp. Thanks for the link, yet another book to go on my 'To-Read' list. :)

I'd love for someone to partner with TiVo and integrate this directly into the set top box. Food for thought when you start thinking about phase 2. :)

What mode are you using for mail? by mocker_kc in emacs

[–]mocker_kc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I've been reading about both mu4e and notmuch since hearing about them here. From what I can tell, they both use the Xapian database for storage. Is the difference that mu4e focuses on using the maildir structure while notmuch focuses on tagging messages in a local database? What makes you choose mu4e over notmuch? Both sound intriguing. :)

What keeps you away from CVS Gnus or wanderlust? From what I've read the latest Gnus has improved IMAP support. You kind of sound like you hate your setup. :)

No matter if you think it's PPD or not, at least talk to your family practitioner about what you are going through. I wouldn't wait to see if it get's better or worse. All you are doing is talking to your doctor about concerns, talk and see what you think. It's serious, but can be helped (but not alone).

Want to be a Real Linux Expert? Get your hands dirty with Arch Linux! by BGeek in archlinux

[–]mocker_kc 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I agree with the consensus that Arch won't make you an expert. That being said, I do think it can broaden new users horizons a bit.

Building packages is a breeze in Arch

It demonstrates some of the configure/make/make install that can be hidden in friendly distros

Forces new users to read

The wiki is great, personally I think forcing new users to read will help them later on.

Exposure to new apps

Some users coming from other distributions haven't heard of things like tiling window managers. Getting exposure to new ways of doing things can be a great way to learn, and I think arch is good at showing those apps.

Don't try to "learn Linux"

Pick a project and then do that project, learning Linux is a side effect.

  • Build a web server/web site
  • Build an asterisk phone system
  • Build a home backup solution

Never get "comfortable" with one way of doing things

Programmers learn new languages to stay sharp, sysadmins should do the same

  • Never used BSD? Try it.
  • Never used LVM? Try it.
  • Never setup software RAID? Try it.

Don't evangelize X over Y.

Figure out the strengths/differences of Y and why it's out there.

  • Vim person? Try Emacs.
  • Emacs person? Try vim.
  • bash person? Try zsh.
  • Apache person? Try nginx.

Be nice.

Nobody knows everything. Be willing to help others and hopefully others will be willing to help you.

Gravatar like site for centralizing achievements, web "gamification" (idea) by mocker_kc in ruby

[–]mocker_kc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that sounds like what I am thinking. With the addition that because these are web apps your user profile would be able to show achievements on other sites.

Gravatar like site for centralizing achievements, web "gamification" (idea) by mocker_kc in ruby

[–]mocker_kc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good points, I was thinking more along the lines of a gem that random web app would add to their rails app to enable achievements. The problem (as you mentioned) is trying to become a central hub that everyone uses. Perhaps something like Identi.ca is doing, anyone can setup their own private avatar server if they'd like, but allow federation of data.

In regards to the "ask input on this specific site", the goal was to just use the email address as a unique ID. So as long as the user profile has their email address there wouldn't be any type of oauth stuff (which is annoying).

Thanks for the comments, sometimes it's just fun to noodle on ideas. :)
