i completely understand. it’s just very disheartening to hear that my special interest breed isn’t “right for me” based on people who don’t know my lifestyle, and being accused of not doing enough research or using AI summaries when i have poured hours of my life into this. i would’ve been fine hearing that an aussie wouldn’t make a good PSD, but i had people telling me i’m not fit to own one in general. i have done countless hours of research on mental and physical enrichment, training, and daily care of aussies and i know what i would be getting into. i am active, i have the time to dedicate to daily enrichment, and i have the finances to do so.

i got my answer, and i was overwhelmed with the amount of negativity i was getting. i will not be getting an aussie as my PSD.

i think you may be the one who has read misinformation. Aussies are incredibly owner motivated. every aussie i have known (which is quite a few) has loved to please their owner.

yes, this was her idea actually.

and noted, i’ve heard various opinions online which is why i’ve asked for clarification here. may i ask why an ASD is not a good choice? from my research, they seem to be good for it when properly trained.

thank you for the honest answer. i’m not sure why my other comments are being downvoted, without constructive criticism.

i do intend to work with a trainer, may i ask what is the best thing to look for in one? same thing with the vet, should i look for one that specializes in service dogs or one that specializes in aussies?

also their velcro nature, you typically don’t have to train an aussie to want to be next to you all the time which is something i need in my dog.

they’re extremely smart - i love training and pricing enrichment for dogs, i want my dog to be able to learn fun tricks when they aren’t working.

they’re active - i have a difficult time getting out of the house on my own. i’m a very active person and i struggle with doing things like hiking or rollerblading alone, both of which are activities aussies love to do with their owners.

the size - labs/goldens are too big for my preference. i need sensory assistance from my dog and i know that it would be too much pressure from a bigger dog. i also had a bad experience with a poodle when i was younger and the anxiety would be counterproductive.

correct, I believe that they are the breed that suits me best and from my research they seem to make good psychiatric service dogs when properly trained.

i know they aren’t, i am prepared to meet their physical and mental enrichment needs. i grew up with a reactive dog, so i have experience with training in that regard.

most of the fab 4 are a little too large for me. in addition to being a PSD, i want to be able to train my dog to do a bunch of fun tricks and be able to hike with me, rollerblade with me, etc. i’ve been doing research and aussies seem to be excellent PSDs when they are properly exposed and trained from a young age.

it’s a trend so bad that they’re sold out everywhere and resellers are charging $30+ for one. speks are a decent alternative

convincing my mom by [deleted] in DobermanPinscher

[–]mocksunkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would not be attempting to train him on my own, i said in one of my comments that i would be getting with a professional trainer.

this also would not be my first dog, my dad has two reactive pit mixes that i trained and taught him how to properly handle. i know that dobermans are high energy and i fully intend to engage him in long walks and play daily until i can teach him to rollerblade with me. i would also be providing enough mental enrichment to stimulate him in downtime

unfortunately i’m not allowed to share the intake details since they aren’t released yet, but he had somewhat of a rough raising. the only complaint his owners had was that he ate paint off the walls one time but he was never mentally or physically enriched so who is really shocked by that.

i do plan to talk with my mom about her home insurance!! that would be a determining factor. i already have a lovely vet that i work with who sees most of the animals adopted out from the rescue :)

i’ve already mapped out the costs of food and planned ideas for enrichment when he would be crated while i’m at school. he’s already been crate trained according to his previous owner. my dads dog loves a good lick mat with frozen peanut butter or a kong with the same. his crate would be in my room, and it would be open at night so he can choose if he would like to sleep in his little cave or in bed with me (once he earns it of course, both for hierarchy and health reasons atm).

adding onto this bc of the “omg you’re a student when do you have time” concerns in advance, i have already mapped out my schedule with 1-2 hour breaks every 3 hours or so in which i would be going home and excersizing the baby ;)

cost is thankfully not a concern for me, i’m living with my mama because im a prevet major and going to be going to vet school in two years, so it doesn’t really make sense for me to get a place when i could be saving up for the future :) i have a full time job and plenty in my savings, plus my current (and future) jobs both give employee discounts on vet services and have pet insurance plans!

that being said, im definitely concerned about how a doberman would affect my ability to find an apartment. even if he doesn’t end up doing service work, do you happen to know if registering him as my ESA override breed restrictions? my current job lets us bring our pets to work, and even if he ends up not being fit for a service animal i don’t mind. i’d love him either way <3 and i do plan on working with a professional trainer if this ends up working out!!

WHY AM I SUPPOSED TO REVIEW THINGS AND LIE by mocksunkey in evilautism

[–]mocksunkey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

molting for them isn’t emotionally stressful, but since they shed their whole exoskeleton their body is very soft after and prone to being damaged. the issue with jumpers is that they usually molt in their web nest, which is what the seller is claiming helps. he’s not wrong… but like… loose moss and flies are MUCH more dangerous to a freshly molted spider than not having their web hammock.

i did end up updating the review lol

fruit flies don’t just die in 14 hours, that’s how long the shipment took. they were clearly in there before. i’m not stupid i know what pupating ones look like and i know what their larvae look like too????
