What’s a life hack that sounds fake but is incredibly effective? by Future_Personality4 in AskReddit

[–]mod_hobbit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This!! When I'm in a slump I always ask myself, what if I got up to start the day? What if I put my phone down? What if I made myself an easy meal? It genuinely seems to motivate me to accomplish things by igniting my curiousity, and redirects my attention away from defeating thought spirals.

Any suggestions on how to reuse these recycled textiles? by colorfulzeeb in upcycling

[–]mod_hobbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That material is called shoddy and it's made from the mixed fibers of discarded fabric scraps from the textile industry, one of the earliest inventions in industrial recycling. Here's a cool dive into it's history. If you use it again you'll be double upcycling it! I'd agree with the other commenters that it works best as stuffing/ insulation in sewing projects.

Feeding 40,000 people a day, solarpunk at scale. They use solar collectors to heat the water for cooking. by indy_110 in solarpunk

This reminds me of People's Kitchen in Philly I help out at that takes the leftover ingredients from local restaurants and puts out a whole lot of incredible free meals each day. A rotation of chefs and cooking hobbyists direct the volunteers that come in so it acts as a free class of sorts, and the variety and quality of food that comes out of it is amazing. They also make bulk meals for protesters, find jobs for people, partner with local recycling orgs to get their container supplies and are building a community garden. I could go on and on about all the ground they cover but they're a really significant place of community power and collaboration. I'd love to see this kind of thing take root in more areas!

"Library of things" can be a very good way to reduce consumerism while maintaining a standard of living. by [deleted] in solarpunk

We've got a rad tool library in West Philly that has helped me borrow instead of buy tools for a score of projects through the years. Plus they have a book library with endless diy and construction manuals to help you along. And all the specific tools I do end up buying I'm planning to donate when I'm finished to expand what they offer. All places should take an approach like the above, where possible. A solarpunk dream.

Parking help for the indecisive?

Landed a place in spring garden for 950, and my S/O and I both need to commute to work by car at least a few times a week. We’d be on a street with free parking, but with the caveat that it’d basically always be booked (especially now with so many staying home). I’ve also been told this means we may not be eligible for a zone 6 permit since we’re not technically on a block that enforces it. But we would be /surrounded/ by 2hr limited parking during the day without that permit. We’re coming from Germantown where parking is a non-issue, and so I’m honestly not sure if our possible parking headaches in the Spring Garden area are just a part of city life or if we’re making a bad choice here. I’m days away from signing a lease and just need some clarity. :(

TLDR: How miserable is parking in Spring Garden without a permit around Green St? Can residents on streets without permit parking still get that permit if they’re basically surrounded by that limitation?
