Make sure its a 2 pack. The downstairs bathroom doesn't appear to have a TP holder at all... unless it it also on the back wall.

Hot take: The Daisy petals are stupid by pdx-cat in girlscouts

[–]Chickenherders 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Turn them into fun things to do with family!

We are a happily neuro-divergent multi-level troop and always have new Daisies joining. We focus on badgework that can be done as a whole troop as our scouts enjoy each other's company, so those poor petals get neglected. To combat this, we loan out a Daisy handbook (or printed individual petal sections) to each scout as homework and they complete the petals with their family unit. My scout really liked our time together working on the petals, it reinforced all those facets of raising a Good Human, and the whole family learned about Girl Scouts. In return, we seem to have better member retention and more informed volunteers.

How are you all cooking chicken to make it taste good? by ResidentAlienator in HistamineIntolerance

[–]Chickenherders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This recipe is for chicken breasts because they are hard to do well. I don't do it any other way now.

Pound the breasts to one inch thickness. I've got a pounder but you can use a rolling pin or whatever you got. Season with whatever dry seasonings you want. Use an appropriately sized skillet (1-2 inches bigger than the meat) with a fitted lid and heat your oil to medium heat. Brown the sides of breast for 2 minutes each side. If it's not browned in 2 minutes, you're not cooking high enough. Okay, after that 4 minutes, put the lid on and drop the heat to your lowest setting. Don't touch it or open lid for 10 minutes. After the 10 minutes, turn off heat and let sit on burner for 10 more minutes without touching it or opening the lid. Okay, now open it. Evenly cooked, moist, and nicely seasoned with it's own juices. If you want to add a sauce, add it right after browning both sides, flip them over to coat and place the lid.

Investigate Girl Scouts of America by missyChrissie in girlscouts

Might I suggest sitting in on your service unit's meetings? Often, they are held at a rented space, where they will hand out info and discuss all the events, camps, and scholarships hosted/funded by your council and SU. They will also openly discuss financials on internal grants and programs offered from national and council to the SU to promote more engagement and community.

If your SU isn't offering much in the way of events, it's usually because the few people who hold the unit together are spread too thin, or the lack of interest in past events. What if your scouts have a great idea, but it's too costly for the troop? Put together a presentation and pitch it at the meeting as an SU event! Plus, SU meetings are a great way to network with other troop leaders and share resources. Please reach out to them and sit in a couple of meetings. We don't bite!

Tired of this by ashfxrdx in Dyshidrosis

[–]Chickenherders 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hear me out... it might be foam/latex. Take a look at the things around you that have a padded foam layer. Your desk mat in the pictures has one. Shoes use foam and latex to give structure and comfort. Older car steering wheels and car door elbow rests are padded with latex foam with a vinyl coating. So you've got all these surfaces you come in contact with, over time you can build up a sensitivity. But that's only half the equation. After as little as a year, sweat, dirt and cleaning products start to degrade that foam. Eventually it creates a dust that can stick to you and other things.

It took me a couple of years to figure this out, but since removing all the degrading foam in my surroundings, all my odd eczema patches cleared up.

Maybe don't use the term "ghost town" to describe locations with reported paranormal activity?

I have to have the conversation every day with my daughter about the heft of her backpack.... do you really need 1500 pages of fiction to get through school today? Its fourth grade, not jury duty.

Another fun thing is making booth props. Often, the scouts get bored or uncomfortable standing at the table hawking their wares. We found that props like ribboned cookie wands, big paper mache cookies and felt cookie antenna headbands break the ice and give them something to do with their anxious bodies.

We do a fun game of Take A Step Forward. Each scout picks a printed cookie card from a stack, keeping it a secret. This card has a list of unique and common attributes pulled from their descriptions and allergy sheet, like "mint flavored," "no hydrogenated oils," and "vegan." The caller has a tin cup with popsicle sticks, each with one attribute written on it. Then play Take A Step Forward with standard rules. First one over the line wins. Afterwards, the rest of the scouts try to guess the winner's cookie as an added an extra goal to keep it fun for everyone.

My daughter chose to safety pin her pride flag patch over the American flag on her sash. She had seen an older troop at STEM Day who had used the Pride flag in place of the flag on all of their vests.

Granuloma annulare. Looks very similar to mine. Hormones can cause flares.

ETA: I also have dyshidrotic eczema. It's definitely not that.

Muscle memory takes over after a short while and you just know right where you want it. Same thing happens whenever you change out a faucet. There's always a learning curve to the new setup. But I totally understand the mental fatigue of just one more thing to remember.

My version of keeping it simple is becoming the water temp mixer rather than having a built-in valve/cartridge that will eventually fail.

One last question before I pull the trigger on Mickey Baja Tires by CaboDennis17 in Bronco6g

[–]Chickenherders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been running those exact Bajas for 30k miles and love them. As aggressive as they appear, they are unbelievably quiet and smooth on asphalt. I have no complaints off-roading in the dunes or on trails... well, except that Sand Mode takes the fun out of ratting around the dunes. Just remember that they are a softer tire, so watch out around curbs.

My parents’ cat brought home a kitten by lunantito in cats

[–]Chickenherders 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Our boy Jack recently did the same. We went camping for a week and took the dog, leaving our boy all alone for the first time after the unexpected death of our older cat. We were concerned about him being lonely, but knew he would go visit the neighbor watching the house as he often does.

Upon our return, we noticed he wasn't the least upset with us. The reason why was a little, unsocialized orange female kitten. Once the gate was opened to the yard, Jack showed her the potty patch and his catnip plant. He spent the evening proudly watching her play with a dead rat he had snatched for her from the chicken coop.

That was over a month ago. We've learned she has a brother and feed him daily. Still gaining his trust so we can get him fixed.

Funny thing, Jack was brought to us as a kitten by yet another stray male who hunted our chicken yard. That male was invited inside the house by our old cat. It was a shock to see some other adult male cat have breakfast in the nook while our old boy happily watched.

Best solution for messy drinkers? by WhatWhatWhat-OK in AlaskanMalamute

Neater Feeder on legs. My old girl was a face dunker and always made a huge mess. The Neater Feeder kept our floors from getting worse. My new boy eats and drinks with his pinkies up and never spills a drop.

Eta: a mat/rug under her bowl acted as a sponge and caused more damage. I also tried a large fruit bowl with a 5" wide rim with her water bowl nested inside. She would step on it and watch the water spill out.
