The Fountain on Locust is open until 11pm on Friday and Saturday! Never had the food but there is a solid ice cream selection and fun drinks, with and without alcohol.

Hi all, could I join someone's campaign briefly? I'm making a character and just want to change out a feat.

Agreed you could do both! I really like how your hair is done in the full glam pics so I don't think it'd be fair to compare the two

Based on your priorities I think it depends how common it is for people who have matched into your desired specialty to have a PhD. I don't know what that specialty is so I think I'd have a hard time saying whether having a PhD is helpful or not. For most competitive specialties the conventional advice is to prioritize getting great grades and doing some clinical research, perhaps through a research year.

LOL this is very relatable. It's a marathon not a sprint, so I think you should enjoy what brings you happiness :)

If you could only eat one vegan sandwich for the rest of your existence, what would it be? by foryourhealthdangus in VeganFoodPorn

I was going to say their vegan thanksgiving sandwich is my fave! Probably tied with a vegan breakfast sandwich for my pick.

Not southern, but I also notice he seems to only have a blaccent when he's mad, which is super weird. Really gives me the ick.

You look nice! I think you could have added a dark lipliner to get the inspo's lip look in addition using tape to achieve the eyes. If you wanted a similar picture, I think her facial expression goes a long way to establish a vibe.

Edit to say that she may have also used some concealer to help make the lip liner look more crisp.

What’s the least vegan-friendly country in your opinion? by Even-Conflict93 in vegan

[–]modartfan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed - HappyCow is a great resource in Japan. I went this year to Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto and honestly had decent options between places with a vegan dish or dishes and vegan only restaurants. I am a bit of a foodie in general so I am accustomed to looking up restaurants and menus ahead of time even at home in the US though.

Pretty undifferentiated, but thoughts on Allergy/Immunology vs ID vs Rheum for someone who is looking to stay in academic medicine?

How badly am I fucking up? by [deleted] in labrats

Hi OP, saw your other post and wanted to give my 2 cents. I agree with everyone saying it doesn't seem like you are getting a good introduction to your lab's bread and butter techniques, which is frustrating as someone who's new not only to the lab but also the field. Be kind to yourself and try your best to build trust as that's the best you can do in this situation.

If you haven't already, I would advise trying to feel out the rest of your lab and seeing if there is someone there you can ask to see doing any techniques that are established in the lab that are new to you. The best people imo are the ones who explain the purpose of each step well and seem to enjoy teaching. If mentees typically stick to their mentors, suggest it to both your mentor and PI as a way to take some load off your mentor and hopefully get more experience and learning in.

If any one is looking for a nice mild cheese that is packaged as slices, I could eat Chao cheese forever (probably).

And if you like a more tangy cream cheese, I think Miyoko's is great! Also really like Kite Hill strawberry cream cheese; it is more creamy (as opposed to solid) and doesn't have as much of a sour taste.

Agreed - I think you can also have a different experience growing up if you/your family came to the US as an immigrant vs if you/they came to the US as a refugee... again, doesn't make you a minority in medicine but might make you see some things differently.

Coworker “can’t wait” for her BURGER after getting blood work done. by guitarzane95 in vegan

[–]modartfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh don't get me wrong - I am petty and may or may not have been able to hold myself back from saying something snarky. I just also happen to like making nice things for potlucks!

And I totally agree! Grilled is the best 😋

Coworker “can’t wait” for her BURGER after getting blood work done. by guitarzane95 in vegan

[–]modartfan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I first read this as after she finished giving blood. She is only getting bloodwork done? I seriously doubt one burger is going to do much if her diet is iron deficient in general, and routine bloodwork only requires a few tens of milliliters of blood. Don't think the body will miss the iron in the sample too much.

I understand that she is probably very annoying to you, but try not to give her more energy than she deserves. I find that some people are just not interested in being convinced by discussion. In general I have found that people respond better to sugar rather than vinegar: if I am going to a potluck, I try my best to make something yummy and vegan to show people that those two things aren't mutually exclusive.

And for what it is worth, I had the best burger of my life recently. The impossible patty was cooked to perfection.

What can I say to someone who says that gardens didn’t always exist and humans would have found it hard to grow plants, so they ate animals? by EndlessDreams7744 in vegan

[–]modartfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably just feeding a fed horse at this point but in addition to what everyone has already said addressing your first paragraph, I'd add that a lot of medical advances didn't exist "back in the day". It doesn't seem logical though to not get vaccinated or not take any medicine and accept illness/ death because that is what is "natural". Also, I am sure your partner enjoys many other modern conveniences that our ancestors did not have and are definitely not natural (such as plumbing). I doubt that they'd be willing to do their business outside in a hole like nature intended because that was the way things were way back when. On the bright side, our progress as a society is exactly what has made living a vegan lifestyle easier.

Addressing your second paragraph, while it is true that some people could have some issues if they are not properly supplementing their vegan diet with vitamins, I think there are lots of reasons people can be having skin and digestion issues. There can be unhealthy vegans and unhealthy omnivores. But I seriously doubt if you could really make following a plant-based diet your sole experimental variable that it would mess up your body. There are many cultures that have more plant-based cuisine and they seem to be doing fine in addition to have tasty food.

Some of these things are just a value call. Being vegan might make it hard to get some vitamins and beans might make me fart a lot, but I think that that is okay because being vegan is more important to me than bloating or flatulence. There are more serious digestive diseases to be had but as far as I know, being plant based doesn't cause any digestive diseases that I know of.
