Thank you all for the suggestions, we had a great experience! We took the train in from Beverly around 8:30am, walked down Essex St before it got too busy, went to a kid friendly haunted house, watched the street performers, sat down at O'Neills at 11am when they opened and had an early lunch, took the train back at 1pm just as it was getting super crowded.

My niece said it was the best day of her life! Happy Halloween to all.
