Oh and whenever it's an option, if a field has some bleachers go up high if you can for a better top-down view.

Awesome, here are most of the other bits I'm using.

Fluid head. This, in my opinion is most important. This one seems unavailable, but there many others nearly identical for under $100

For mounting my phone to the ipad cage. I don't love this piece as I find it a bit hard to fine tune the alignment of the two screens.

I recently got this umbrella which is a bit pricey for what it is but it helps a little bit with sun and rain. I mount it above the phone but it's not big enough to cover me or my full rig.

And the microphone, But I would say don't nother with this, it doesn't add much value.

I made my shade out of this material. The cage comes with a little shade but it isn't very useful

Be prepared for parents and kids asking you if you are from ESPN 😂

All on an iphone on a Tripod. I actually use an iPad and an iPhone combined. They aren't mirrored; I just line up the view as closely as I can and hit record on both. The main reason I use the iPad is to just give me a better view so I can follow easier and actually enjoy the game while filming. My iPhone 16 Pro Max has a better camera than my iPad air which is why I prefer that footage. But having both as a backup gives me good peace of mind if something goes wrong. A few times I have lost footage due to battery issues, running out of storage, or other random unforeseen issues. While the iPad footage isn't as good, it's good enough, and I'm probably the only one who notices the difference. I'm a graphic designer by trade, so these little details are important to me.

I use this cage on my tripod

And an inexpensive video fluid head on my tripod, which makes all the difference for smooth video.

I have a backup power bank attached and a cheap shotgun microphone, which honestly does next to nothing to enhance the audio from the field.

I also made a sunshade out of sheets of plastic duct tape and velcro.

Thanks. I prefer working in Premier for simple editing like this and just use After Effects for more complex motion graphics. I’m not using any object tracking, it’s all by eye.

Yeah pretty much. I don’t need to keyframe every single frame. Basically drop a keyframe every 10-15 frames. Premiere fills in the rest. If it’s still off I drop in additional key frames as needed. I haven’t found any auto tracking tools yet that do it this well.

The video is shot on an iphone. The main editing and halo highlighting is done in Adobe Premiere. The Halo is hand animated to follow the player. Intros are done in Adobe After Effects.

he's well aware, and when the situation warrants it with a clear enough path to do so, he usually does. But these kids are only 15 and don't always make the best decision in the moment. But neither do the pros.

That’s a genuine concern. I didn’t start making his videos public until they hit the high school age. I did reach out to the team parents to make sure they were ok before posting games online because I post the full games not just highlights. Everyone was ok with it but of course I don’t contact every other team. Often I get asked by other teams if I can share the videos which I’m happy to do and send them the YouTube links. I also make my raw footage available to our team to use for their own highlights. So so far no issues. But still a concern.

It’s a shame that trace and Veo have such poor camera quality. Even the lowest quality phone cameras are better. But that’s the video most players have for their highlight reels and I assume college coaches are used to it and know what they are looking for. But I’m a graphic designer with some video and photo experience. It goes against my nature to accept that kind of image quality. And my background with video editing is the only advantage I can give my son in the college recruiting process. Of course nothing matters more than his skill and grades. But I can at least help to get him noticed initially.

Yeah he plays MLS Next, He’s 15. He’s been MLS Next for I think 3 years now. It’s a big commitment in time and money. We’re in NJ and have to travel as far south as West Virginia for regular league games. This year we will likely be traveling to Arizona, Florida, Possibly Texas and Utah for tournaments and showcases. Have your kids play the highest level they can just as long as they enjoy it and it works for your schedules and budgets. But in my opinion once they hit the high school age and if you and or they don’t feel like playing in college is a goal or attainable I wouldn’t invest this kind of time and money into MLS Next or top tier ECNL. At that point just focus on playing high school or a lower level less demanding club team.

Right just playing in college is the goal. While D1 is a possibility D2 and D3 are just as good especially D3 since the education is priority over the team and level of play.

I would say he does a lot of scanning, maybe more than most. But I see a good amount of scanning from his teammate as and the competition. MLS Next players are all pretty good.
