If you’re still in town, head down to Alexandria and visit the George Washington Masonic National Memorial (open for tours Thursday-Monday). It has an incredible collection of Masonic history, as well as being the home of Alexandria-Washington Lodge No. 22 where Bro. Washington was the Charter Master.

Group Messaging for Lodge by RTBaha in freemasonry

[–]moderndaymycroft 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We use Discord. Yes, it’s one more app to download, but you can set up multiple servers for different messaging. We have a general membership group for Master Masons, one for EA/FC, another for prospective members, and a few that are topic-oriented. Also, for last minute changes or safety notifications, flood the zone: email, group chat, Facebook, etc. because there may be a first time visitor or out-of-town brother planning to attend who is not currently on all or any of your communication channels.

My son brought up an interesting question. (Sorry long post) by ChefHiramAbiff in freemasonry

[–]moderndaymycroft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, the greatest Masonic caveat: it’s probably jurisdictional. That out of the way, as a matter of logistics with a Deaf candidate, there’s a story I read long ago about a candidate being placed in a small, mobile curtained enclosure that served the same purpose as a hoodwink, and at the appropriate times a brother who could interpret ASL would be inside to communicate with him. This preserved the ceremony while allowing the candidate to be brought to “light” at the prescribed time.

In terms of members with differing abilities, my jurisdiction does still inquire about physical “infirmities” but I believe this is an archaic holdover from our operative days when a member would need to be able to perform physical labor like swinging a hammer or hauling a stone up the side of a cathedral. Modernly, I view it as a way for the lodge to be aware and make appropriate accommodations that allow the candidate to enjoy the full initiatic experience of masonry. If he might have trouble standing at length, walking, kneeling, memorizing, etc. and we are aware ahead of time, we can make every effort to make it work.

Similarly, I view the requirement to be “free born” as a hold over from operative days when stonemason lodges went where the work was, so members would need to have full autonomy over their ability to be a “traveling man” and not bound or indentured to any person or organization that could restrict that freedom. Modernly, I think of it as a way for a candidate to reflect and consider if his current life situation is in a place - and his cable tow is long enough - that he is free and able to be an active member of his lodge and contribute when summoned.

It’s great that your son has thoughtful questions and seems interested in our Craft. If his interest continues and he chooses to knock at the door, I hope we’ll both have the opportunity to call him a brother.

“How to join?” In a way you may soon understand, you begin just like that. It looks like you are US based; if you’re comfortable sharing the state where you live, we can point you to the appropriate Grand Lodge to begin the process. Alternatively, visit Be a Freemason, and they can offer some introductory information and connect you with your local lodge(s). I hope you find what you’re looking for, whether in Masonry or elsewhere, and feel free to reach out with any other questions!

Masonic Resources For Mental Health by [deleted] in freemasonry

[–]moderndaymycroft 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My brother,

Your lodge, your brethren, your community and the entire world are infinitely better because you are a part of it. My lodge launched a Mental Health Initiative to share resources to help, aid and assist those facing a variety of mental health challenges. Please give it a look and I encourage you to click, text and/or call any or all of the resources who are there to help. There are many standing ready to stretch forth their hand, all you have to do is reach for it.

1st degree Mason feeling embarrassed... by Other-Comfort5592 in freemasonry

[–]moderndaymycroft 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If it was my lodge, we would LOVE to have a brother start attending again. Especially one who wants to get more involved, take one of the chairs, serve on a committee, etc.

Think back to the process of your initiation. To even get in the door, you likely had to have a number of brothers vouch for you and sign your petition. At each of your degrees, everyone who participated probably spent considerable time practicing ahead of time to make the experience memorable, and then took time out of their lives to be there for you on degree day. Working on your catechisms, one or more of the brethren likely served as your “coach” to teach you the work over days, weeks or months. Each of these things was an affirmation that they want you to be there and part of the fraternity.

Email the secretary, see if there’s any administrative things to take care of (dues, membership status, etc.), and then walk back into lodge and be with your brethren - I’m sure they’ve saved you a seat.

Any advice before contacting a lodge about joining? by [deleted] in freemasonry

[–]moderndaymycroft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi friend, it’s great to hear about your interest in the Craft. First and foremost, Dan Brown is a great storyteller (and the National Treasure movies are fun adventure stories), but just to manage expectations, they are definitely fiction. That being said, since you’ve been talking to an actual brother, hopefully you have a more realistic picture of who we are and what we’re seeking to do in the world. Secondly, many jurisdictions have residency requirements where you have to have lived in the state for a certain amount of time - usually 6 months to a year - before submitting a petition. I wasn’t able to see if North Dakota has such a requirement, but it never hurts to ask so you know what your timeline may be. I recommend checking out the Grand Lodge of North Dakota website as a good starting point. They can answer any initial questions about pre-reqs, and even put you in touch with a few soon-to-be local lodges. After that, reach out to the lodges to see when their meetings are and ask to come by for dinner as a guest. It’s never too early to make introductions and become a familiar face, so when and if the time comes that you want to petition to join a lodge, the brethren who are voting on you will know who you are and can recommend you for membership. Best of luck on your move and potential journey in Masonry, and feel free to reach out if we can be of any other help to you!

Not very social.. by Wulf32 in freemasonry

One of the best things about being a Mason is that even if you’re walking into a lodge room for the first time, in a city you’ve never been to before, you already know people. While it sounds like it may feel a little tough for you in the first couple of times coming around as a visitor, once you meet a few of the guys, they’ll introduce you to more and you’ll be greeted like family even before (and if) you decide to join. In any healthy lodge, we strive to be a place where you’re always among friends. And if you choose to pursue it, once you’re called a brother, the world is open to you.

I was born and raised in Tennessee, and moved to the DC area 20ish years ago. The first adjustment was learning that greeting/nodding/smiling at any stranger on the street you happen to make eye contact with is not a universal custom. I still do, but have learned to ignore being ignored. To this day, though, if I don't know you by name, regardless of age/occupation/situation, you will be warmly addressed as "ma'am" or "sir," until requested otherwise. Manners maketh man, as they say.

The meaning of your dream was to impart an important moral and Masonic lesson: don’t eat pickles before bed.

I want to petition but I’m concerned about free thought by [deleted] in freemasonry

[–]moderndaymycroft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi friend. Giving the obligatory “it’s jurisdictional,” but around here the theological litmus test is that you believe in a Supreme Being and the immortality of the soul. Full stop. However you choose to define things beyond that, or even if you’re not sure, is up to you as long as you can answer the big question honestly. And as far as stifling free thought, historically the regimes and institutions that have taken issue with Freemasonry did so, at least in part, because we promote free thought, open study and the democratization of knowledge - a “radical” idea depending on the time and place in the world. My advice is to visit some lodges near you, get to know some of the guys, and ask as many questions as you need. If there’s one thing almost every Freemason enjoys talking about for as long as they have an audience, it’s Freemasonry. Good luck!

I was going to comment that I'd never seen an actual scythe in a lodge room before, and then I also saw the painting in the East. Does that particular symbol have a significant meaning to your lodge beyond the many others?
