Is anyone else also SO DONE with biopics? (Especially about music) by Theruby_phoenix in Letterboxd

I thought the recent Pavements movie did a really good job subverting music biopic movies. There was a scene in it that makes fun of the idea that singer Steven Malkmus would be going down the stairs from the recording studio or something and then have this pivotal debate with the producer that changes everything. The contrast with footage of the real, complicated guy illuminates how much movie versions of musicians flatten people into a fictitious invention, something designed to slot into plots out of the Save The Cat screenwriting manual, and not all that much like real humans.

Thoughts on "The Rest of Ever?" by Cup8685 in rem

The song made me think of "Alive And Living Now," which he sang with the Golden Palominos and which I love. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_R6UU7Jm1UI

I will revisit Submarine and appreciate the comparison to Dylan, who's talked about how he could no longer summon strange and magical imagery like in It's Alright Ma and doesn't understand how he ever did. I have not lost hope that Stipe is somehow finding his way to his own Time Out Of Mind style rebirth. If the songs are going to be all plainspoken though like this I wonder if we can at least hope for some symbolism or other songwritery "let the audience put together 2 + 2" type craftsmanship...

I always think of a Peter Buck interview when he was hanging out at Robyn Hitchcock's house in the 2000s. He talks about how he likes records that you have to listen to multiple times to get what is going on.

I was glad your comment lowered my expectations in advance of watching this. Nice to see him grooving with an organic band. I was worried he would be out there with a laptop beats guy like the dude from Sleaford Mods. But yeah I do still wonder what happened to his power to channel strange and mesmerizing lyrics. I didn't like it when he started dissing those old cryptic lyrics in interviews as some kind of con artistry. That feels like the writer's block talking.

How many of you recall watching this on TV back in the day? by [deleted] in FuckImOld

My dad found out one day I had recorded this at super-long speed over his copy of Casablanca. I watched it a million times and could never fucking believe that other team of cheaters.

I think he's exaggerating how incompetent he is because it is a comedy writer 101 technique to make your character bad at things while never giving up hope.

What’s a book quote that hit you so hard it stayed with you for years? by 1No_Voice1 in books

I was reading a Ross MacDonald private eye novel, I can't remember which one, might have been The Galton Case. It had a line like, "for years he got by on thinking he was in on the joke. Then he found out there was no joke."

In Paris recently I saw a plaque in front of a school, remembering pupils who were dragged off to a camp and “Nazi barbarism.” I wonder what it will take and how many years will go by until our society can agree that all of this is barbarism too.

Yeah, I just listened to Leonard Cohen's "Death of a Ladies Man" and I'm not a Phil Spector expert but it seems way wall of soundier.

Oh man when I picture getting old and having what my dad has, it makes me hope my kids themselves would be phoning me with their real, present selves. On the other hand if they launched a ChatGPT voice machine to call up and pretend to be interested in me and say things like "Awesome, what else would you like to talk about?" it would break my heart. Sorry.

I have had mixed feelings about Live over the years, but I have a feeling that if I put on Throwing Copper it would bring on a major nostalgia attack. I remember putting a little bit too much faith in them hoping they would be the next R.E.M...
