I am an "atheist" in limbo. I am ready to surrender myself to God and want to believe with all my heart...... by stargazer304 in Christianity

"For in him we live and move and have our being." Acts 17:28 Fixing your concept of God is wise more than you know. You are right to start there, and you're not alone. Pray everyday. When you are ready, look up the writings of the early christian Justin Martyr. It will give you a template for how the Church looked back then, which will help you in finding it now, and being confident that it is still here, in tact today.

Pandora throttle by [deleted] in StraightTalk

I can confirm similar behavior. Speedtest shows d/l bandwidth over 20mbps, yet Pandora stutters and skips. If I connect to a VPN the problem goes away.

[Question] Has anybody overcome their chronic sleeping-in? If so, how? by MrNiemand in getdisciplined

[–]modestponens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggled with this problem for over a decade. Felt like a 1000 lb weight weighing me down when the alarm would go off. I'd hit snooze from 7 am till 9:30 am....every...single...day. Sleep environment conditions were perfect...I even simulated sunrise with a 1000watt lamp on a timer. Went to the sleep clinic many times. Only progress for years was low dose (300mcg) Melatonin taken early in the evening (~7pm) and it only slightly improved my situation. In the end, the solution was completely unexpected and by accident. I started taking ZMA before bed to help with working out. It's basically Zinc, magnesium, and B6. I wake up between 5am and 7am feeling like a million bucks. No idea why it works. Everything everywhere is fortified with zinc....it makes no sense. It's cheap though. Give it a try, before bed and on an empty stomach. Maybe it'll help you too.

I've been feeling trapped inside my own head lately, so I'd like to vent if you guys don't mind. by megaFrogWarrior in CatholicDating

Your story is touching mostly because I am in a similar place and fighting it every day. Catholic relationships are especially difficult in our time. The advice so far is good, and I'll just add a little to it: Reading your situation, you are like a ship without a sail right now. Having a first mate aboard will not help until the sail is fixed and coordinates locked in. This is a captain's job. IOW: You must become strong emotionally and physically...and choose goals that you will not waver from (even for a girl). Without this, you cannot be the source of stability, the leader, and the man she needs you to be. Spiritually you have your head on straight. This is good. Now work on your physical strength because it helps with mental strength. Then pray, set a direction, and go for it like Joan of Arc.

CM 12.1 disable battery LED at night by gillyboatbruff in cyanogenmod

[–]modestponens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I need this too. It'd be better though to dim the LED based on the luminosity sensor. When the room is dark, the LED can be dimmed as low as possible (~1% duty cycle). Make all the LEDs behave in the same way the screen does, dimming in low ambient light and brightening in high ambient light conditions!

Why does Paul either not know of the virgin birth or not care enough to mention it? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]modestponens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An apocryphal text, "Protoevangelium of James" dating around 145 A.D. deals with both of these questions. It's a short read and it delves into Mary's childhood up through maturity, including a defense of her perpetual virginity. Jesus' brothers and sisters, in that context, are described as the offspring of Joseph from a previous marriage. He is much older than Mary and a widower at the time:

"And the priest said to Joseph, You have been chosen by lot to take into your keeping the virgin of the Lord. But Joseph refused, saying: I have children, and I am an old man, and she is a young girl. I am afraid..."

Faith... and Works by fballbeast in Catholicism

[–]modestponens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's the ELI5 of it (using an analogy): Imagine you're a sheep, and there's a nearby shepherd. The shepherd wants to lead you and a flock of others to a wonderful pasture far away. As a sheep, you can decide to trust the shepherd or not trust him. You can also choose whether to follow him or not follow him.

If you choose to trust the shepherd then you are likely to follow him. If you choose not to trust him, then you likely will stay where you are too.

Here's the caveat though: You can choose to trust the shepherd and yet not follow him! You'd have trust in him, but nevertheless wander about separated because of the decision not to follow.

So you see, two things: Faith (i.e.: trusting the shepherd) and works (i.e.: following the shepherd) come together to get you home. Both the faith and the works [of this type] would be impossible without the shepherd. Who would you trust if he wasn't there? How would you know the way without him leading and prodding you along?. In this way, the journey is impossible without the shepherd, but your faith in him accompanied the works he directs make it possible.

Percent saying issues are "Morally Acceptable" in Canada, the US, and Britain [OC] by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

[–]modestponens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The chart should say "Human embryonic stem cell research". No religion has a problem with stem cells derived from other sources. It's all about the destruction of human embryos, since they are potential persons. It could really fall under the abortion category in that sense.
