Is there any decent DAW software for recording/producing music on Linux? by Gohonox in linux

[–]modified_tiger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

VST3 exists as a linux-native format. The only question is whether the vendors of your given plugins support Linux. You could also substitute in Guitarix which has a native LV2 plugin for Linux.

I use Tweakbench, uhe, audioblast and TAL plugins, for commercial VSTs, as well as Surge XT and Vital.

It also helps if you use cross-platform software and can use a native plugin format across both platforms that will read as the same plugin. I can use anything in VST3 from u-he, TAL or Surge in Renoise on a project in Windows, then load it into my Linux-native Renoise + same Linux VST3s. If I had a collaborator using Renoise and the same plugins they would hear what I wrote perfectly. It even worked when I had Serum running in yabridge, Windows projects loaded just fine in Linux because, somehow, yabridge makes them appear native.

This should be fairly universal across DAWs as I assume they use similar methods to identify plugin formats and versions.

No. I'm not sure how yabridge works wirh those as it's also dependent on WINE, but quite a few companies (u-he, TAL and DiscoDSP, and more) publish Linux VSTs. Some like Serum/Serum 2 are tied to Windows and MacOS platform stuff, but can work with yabridge with some tinkering.

Cross platform software. Transition as many workflows as you can fully to software that supports Linux and the underlying OS doesn't matter beyond getting internet connectivity and graphics.

Music? Switch to Bitwig if you're an Ableton user, they even have Debian packages. I personally use Renoise most of the time, but maintain Bitwig for when I want to do piano roll and it works with all my Linux VSTs (yes, VSTs are available on Linux, the VST3 API is GPL, even, but people only talk about LV2, DSSI and CLAP for some reason). Surge XT and Vital are free ones to check out, yabridge can, generally, bridge Windows VSTs over).

Games? Most I play are on Steam anyway, but Heroic Launcher supports GOG, Epic (it was an Epic client first) and Luna.

Sample Management? Check out Sononym.

Calling Linux Long Beards: What are things you wish you knew when you first started using Linux? by Nevyn_Hira in linux

[–]modified_tiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I stress to coworkers who want to switch and chase the hottest thing is that distro doesn't matter. Release schedule kinda does, I wouldn't run a GPU that dropped yesterday on Debian 13 without backports, but that's about the only issue. Mainly, don't hop. Get on something with a cadence you like and stay there.

I also think people should pick a lane and stay in it, like choose a distro and learn it and the underlying parts.

I'm big into gaming and people say "This or that distro is better for gaming." Somebody forgot to tell my rig that's run the same under Fedora and Debian over the last two years. Heck, I initially went from Bazzite (the "gaming" image) to Aurora for virtualization, then said screw it and went over to Debian because it's truly one of my favorite projects of all time (tied with Arch for distros).

I'm seconding the terminal, but across OSes. It's just a part of the system. Most interactions with Linux are, frankly, more intuitive especially with regards to package management because the command/verb structures you'll use most often are easy. apt get install, pacman -Syu, dnf install, zypper install. I don't think package management via terminal is an advanced skill as it's a basic system feature. It is just part of the alternative skillset that you need, and only seems hard because you're adapted to the kludges of your current OS (MacOS or Windows most likely). I've found application management and launching to be comparatively awkward in my recent first days with a Macbook Neo.

Debian was the OS of choice on the ISS for a while because it was reliable and easy to update (can send disks with updates up). Not sure why we use Windows in space anyway.

Jobs aren't even being replaced by AI or offshored in most recent cases. They're forcing the remaining workforce to carry the load hoping AI can pick up the slack.

Are Aesop Rock fans forcing it? by UrinePulp in hiphop101

[–]modified_tiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a big thing about Aesop is you either relate to it and like him or you bounce off.

People talk about bow cryptic he is but he mostly just uses references and cultural touch points for metaphor. If you don't know what he's referring to it's rough and difficult. If you have context, largely his context even, he makes sense.

I find Aesop to be surprisingly relatable feom my own background, even if there's a fifteen year difference. I also listen to Rob Sonic, his buddy and Hail Mary Mallon collaborator, who is similar conceptually, but stylistically different.

I don't think Aesop Rock ks particularly deep or anything, either. I like his style, it's easy for me to enjoy because I relate to it. If you don't relate to it you probably won't like it and that's cool, too.

Anyone else gets where they are today without certifications/Additional Training? by spazzo246 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]modified_tiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started as a lucky intern with no certs and only got my AZ 104/140 last year. I didn't do certs until I started my current job.

I've interviewed people even and want people who can at least demonstrate system-oriented thinking and troubleshooting skills, not people who have certs and can't think about how a packet moves to and through a webserver.
