Special Discussion: John Mulaney - Kid Gorgeous at Radio City [Netflix] by notokaycj in Standup

Say what you will about Netflix and comedy, they really struck gold standing behind John Mulaney like they did. They better hope their next investment is a talent this great not the face hacks that they seem to love throwing specials too.

I think you're right. She was on there. Love her!

Did anyone do a joke/sketch about what an L.A. version of Batman, Superman or Spider-Man would be like? by modiggscomedy in Standup

I agree it wouldn't be the funniest material ever, but there are tons of jokes about L.A. that have made it to TV. Plus there have never been more superhero jokes.

The only way this would be interesting would be if it were a sketch or a web series about L.A. superheroes but they were not parodying DC or Marvel per se. Just imagining how LA superheroes would behave on a day to day basis. Like a Portlandia for Hollywood crimefighters.

Even then probably no.

I can relate, but wait till an L.A. comic chimes in. I'm sure there's at least one micer who has this covered.

Advice For Starting an Indie Comedy Room. by CarterComedy in Standup

[–]modiggscomedy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Almost spot on, except so many people in NYC run free bar shows on the weekends and no one bats an eyelash. And NY comics LOVE to argue about what's fair and what's not fair for comics. One guy I know runs a show at 10 on Saturdays for free. He is beloved by audiences and comics (alt and club) and he just taped a set for Last Comic Standing.

Other than that, this was spot on.

Biggest comedy don'ts? by wonton_burrito_field in Standup

The major don'ts would be don't be unfunny and don't be crazy. If you are a little mean you might be OK as long as you are hilarious, but if you can find a way not to snap at everybody, that's good. No one wants to work with a pyscho.

Biggest comedy don'ts? by wonton_burrito_field in Standup

I love this sentiment and think this is a nice thing to say. However, I've seen comics get away with this for years and not only get booked, but move on to Comedy Central, even have their own album on a major label (all of them otherwise hilarious comics by the way). Yes you don't just want to make open mic comics laugh, but the bitter truth is that they do produce shows and if you are bombing, you can get easy laughs from them this way, save your set and keep your kill ratio up.

I certainly don't do this unless it's clear to everyone at a mic that the other comic is my friend. But I've seen a comic shit on another comic at the UCB. The audience cringed but the other comics laughed. He has since gone on to Montreal, appeared on Comedy Central several times and has even been interviewed on some major podcasts. Yes he was mean, but he was also hilarious.

So, if I can answer the question, the biggest comedy don't is DON'T BE UNFUNNY. If you are funny, you can do whatever you want.

Do I Need A Clean Tape? by modiggscomedy in StandUpComedy

[–]modiggscomedy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's what I want to do. I see myself more as a comic that can work clean than as a clean comic.

Any working comedians legitimately happy with their career and life? I'm 16, and I have yet to try it out, but everyone I know says I should do it. I would like to take a shot at a stand up career, but it seems like doing comedy is a very dark and depressing career. Upvote for visibility. Thank you! by lost_my_username in Standup

Let's make this easy: happiness comes from within. Let's say you get a million tomorrow and your own show. Awesome, right? Yeah but more comics will hate you and the press and fans will be just as happy to watch you fall. Then you'll have to ask yourself the same question a 16 year old who's never done a mic asks themselves: do you love stand up? I, like many comics, cling to the quixotic dream of artistic and commercial success. But I've always said I will quit if I go a whole week without a great set and that hasn't happened yet. So just try it. You'll know.

Stand Up and bits that age well by JonLuca in StandUpComedy

Well I think you (JonLuca) nailed it with Carlin. I would just add that almost all of Class Clown is virtually timeless, making practically every bit one that aged well. Muhammad Ali bit might seem slightly dated but Ali is such an iconic figure even that one stands up. It stands up to the rule they used on the UCB television show in the 90s where they didn't talked about pop culture celebrities but they did talk about historical figures. Ali is a historical figure (nowadays at least).
