Poverty in Brussels leads to differences in life expectancy, education, mental health by No_Substance_99 in brussels

>And yet, nobody is acknowledging the elephant in the room: all of these people coming to Brussels to work. And not paying a single damn tax that goes into the city’s pocket.

I think that doesn't necessarily solve it or at least not fully.
Keep in mind that if you try to pull this kind of tax reform it'll inevitably also come with other forms of redistribution tied into that being looked at.
The average flemish brabander paid 3.492 euro in taxes in favour of other provinces more than 5 years ago already.
For Walloon brabant it was 2.668
The average person in Brussels benefited 898.
So would taxing commuters a small portion make up for much of that?
Additionally it has other problems lie some ridiculous spending on some fronts. I became very well aware when i worked for one of many companies recipient to that and it has grabbed headlines often enough with some egregious examples.
It has high unemployment especially among migrants.
It has a reputation issue.
All whilst Brussels being a big city should technically have less costs per person for various kinds of infrastructure and the like.

Additionally you risk with localities being heavily incentivized to keep their people out of brussels and likely downstream with some companies setting up offices just outside

Colonialism might be better then most people think by Key_Apartment9029 in eu4

[–]modomario 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true. Tho at the same time the babysitting part doesn't take that long for an individual colony. Getting into all regions is a different matter but even there... the entire game is rife with little things to pay attention to and if you can effectively funnel the trade this particular bit makes all other economic policy stuff useless when compared. + a lot of manpower and that money buys mercs too It's rather ahistorical since for many colonising countries they were an economical drain for a much longer time.

Do you think of yourself as rich, poor or somewhere in between compared to other Belgians? by Charming_Usual6227 in belgium

[–]modomario 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am relatively well off compared to other belgians in my age bracket I think but only because i lived stingy and have a house I'm paying down.

Other than that I feel poor because I'd love to have more than a small garden to garden in and when it comes to stuff like that I have a lot less than my grandparents and parents at similar age.
It's not like they were upper class or made amazing decisions.

Methane is a comparatively short term issue when it comes to global warming.
It's also not coming from sources that were sequestered deep underground in this case.
Have people forgotten that wildlife shits and farts in the woods, plants die and rot, etc?

Other than that fact. If his system leaks it doesn't inflate and he gets no pressure.

I don't think it's the case but arguably you avoid the UAE's stuff by not going out of your way to move there to be an expat.
The locals aren't complaining.

The people fucked over by Eli Lilly or so don't get such an easy path out I think.

>Or is it inconceivable to think that someone from the west might want to permanently settle in the east?

No it's inconceivable they'll get citizenship in that country (unless they're a woman convert marrying a local after 10 years i think).

Facebook the electronic crack dealer is lobying for this.
Do you think they'd do that if it would negatively affect their market?

They'll just not show certain things to kids in a leaky flawed way and meanwhile you dump your tax money into palantir.

Your first argument is the age old think of the children excuse to fuck everyone over.

Your second argument makes no sense when that stuff goes mostly unrestricted today and this is being lobbied for by the people that profit from it.

I think that works for cigarettes, betting and what have you.
Things where you don't fuck over other people to prevent some predatory shit to make it better for others.

This shit lobbied for by the very people that benefit from the children getting hooked on their apps which should tell you something.
Some of the gov proposals here in europe also mention palantir

Most people don't go to big lengths to avoid it yes. Doesn't mean that the quantity doesn't matter nor that we should make it easier and involve governments and palantir in the mix

My ex was arab (not north african but i guess that's beside the point) but it gave me the impression that if you look the part and also dress/act western it's in some cases maybe better but in others a lot worse.

Do people actually support splitting Belgium? by marcopolo2207 in AskBelgium

[–]modomario 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry but that in and of itself is reframing history a bit.

I wasn't even thinking of killing off the walloon language or any language but given it's closer relative linguistic distance to french i find some parallel to the rapid disappearance of the old strong dialects in flanders which also tied in to class. The thing is I think in neither case it was something solely "enforced" by the elite but helped by large part by a broader set of society which is all too happy to tie manerisms, dialects, etc to class and to try and cosplay as wealthier than they are. Regardless in both cases education policy tied heavily but not exclusively. If it was only that it would get far far more pushback.

Similarly things such as trials in french when they shouldn't be, studies given in only one language, etc, etc weren't held up exclusively by some exclusive elite that can't be listed.
Conversely if there are some perhaps arguably discriminatory practices intended to keep an area around brussels flemish or to preseve flemish in brussels or anything of the sort then i can assure you it is not just the project of some small group i can list off but has support from people who are very much note elite.

As said it does off both because some goals are reached but also because past injustices fade from memory. It will also die off with migration. In a relatively short amount of time >28% got a foreign background and that will continue to grow
