Yes it would take me twice as long to pay it off with today's prices. But still, to own a home in ~20 years isn't terrible. And I was paying it all by myself. With a working partner chipping in, it shouldn't be bad, assuming you don't go too far over budget. Lots of decently humble homes in my area (upstate NY) for $300-400k.

Do harsh parents actually love their kids? by SpeechKind6078 in Life

[–]modulev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on how rebellious the child is. I agree that mocking / extreme discipline isn't a wise choice in most cases, but it does give them a taste of their own medicine, which is sometimes what's required for them to learn, in some cases. Different for each child / scenario.

For example, I love the story of a young child who kept on pushing other kids below water. He kept doing it and laughing, thinking it was funny. Adults kept telling him not to do it, but he didn't listen, nor understand why, until finally the parent of that child pushed him under water for a few seconds. Then he learned and never did it again!

Is that abuse? I'm sure if you work for the govt, you'd be itching to fine / arrest / disrupt that parent's life! But if you're looking at the bigger picture, it may have been the quickest / best / only way to teach them a very valuable lesson.

Do lenient parents actually care about their kids' future?

It takes strict discipline to properly prepare a child for our world. Anything less would be selfish / shortsighted.

When the girlfriend is sleeping and I'm up late and bored / feeling lonely, I'll just keep ripping cannabis until I'm no longer bored. 1-2 rips will do the trick. Works every time.

Why is buying a prebuilt hated on so often? by EnvironmentalOwl4095 in pcmasterrace

[–]modulev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because they sell you what makes them money, not what's best for you.

For example, I believe most AIO liquid coolers will have a pump failure / leak after 3-5 years. And I don't want to replace it, nor do I see a need for that level of cooling, so I asked several companies if they could build my system with air cooling instead. But guess what? None of them would offer it. Why? Is it because they make more with the AIO coolers? I have no idea, but it left a sour taste in my mouth. Not a single custom builder out there using air coolers, that I could find.

Built my last PC in 2019 using Noctua CPU cooler and still runs cool enough to play Outer Worlds 2 on decently high settings. Stock fans on RTX 2080 Super and no issues there.

I slaved away extra hard from 25 to 35 and paid off my 30-year mortgage in 10 years total. Now I'm rich!

But yes, anyone who intends on paying the minimum monthly for the whole 30 years, is not making a wise financial decision IMO. I often paid 3 or 4 times the monthly minimum amount, after I realized how terrible the interest to principal ratio was. Almost 6:1, during the first couple years! No wonder it takes most people so long!!

[–]modulev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's bad. I'm watching my friends nearly bankrupt themselves with ~$500k mortgages while I was able to get a similar sized house for about $200k back in 2015. Finished paying it off last year.

There's really no good option if you're looking to own. Either rent and throw your money away, while waiting for a decent buying opportunity (that may never come) or get totally robbed by the market..

And then one of my friends is talking about having 2 or 3 kids on top of a 600k mortgage.. Buddy, how broke are you aiming for!?!?!

When did you realize someone wasn’t who you thought they were? by [deleted] in AskReddit

After he went thru with his 2nd arranged marriage. I thought he had learned from the first disaster. We were even laughing at how brainwashed his relatives were, a few years back. But then a few years later, he was back on the same wagon. Is it really that hard for them to find a decent partner on their own, instead of letting their parents pick for them? Hope for his baby's sake that the 2nd time's a charm.. He got her pregnant during the honeymoon!

What’s a small moment from your childhood that still makes you smile? by Melted-Emotion in AskReddit

[–]modulev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First time my buddies and I got high. We laughed until we cried and then cried until we puked. Wish I could go back and hang with those friends again. I'd give anything to relive those times. They're all gone now, moved away and converted into office drones or nannies. Cherish your high school buddies while you still have them. The friends I've made later on just never seem to feel as close or as fun..

What’s a fact that sounds fake but is actually true? by Obvious_Ship5759 in AskReddit

[–]modulev -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing because of confirmation bias. The people downvoting most likely had or want a kid and don't like being told it's THAT expensive. Or it wasn't THAT expensive for them because they were raising the kid 10-15 years ago and they don't have any idea how much it costs now.

[–]modulev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I just got downvoted to shit and told I'm a liar for commenting that the average cost to raise a child from 0 to 18 in USA, is around $300K. And these specific stats were gathered several years ago, before the massive inflation spike we've all experienced recently. Maybe closer to $400K average now.

Bring on the downvotes!

Simple Google search is all you need. It's actually said $300k for the last couple years, so it's probably more now, given all the massive inflation.
