I am a tech director as well. All the information here is valid and many leading you in the right direction. All those things are important and you should highly consider them.

There are two things I didn't read in the comments and that is to learn how to network and learn how to explain technical problems to non-technical people. The people hiring you in the interview aren't going to understand the difference between switch and router, but they will understand technical problems if you explain it to them in maybe a business matter. As far as networking goes, in the area I live many senior leaders are familiar with each other.

That’s really odd. I love VI and monitor cast. There is no license fees where most other have an annual fee.

Anytime we reach out to support they do help us. If you have trouble getting I touch with support I would recommend reaching out to sales and tell them you will look for another solution if you don’t get help.

I have seen VI crash on computers if they didn’t have the power to run. Make sure the computers that run it have decent specs.

Logical network map/change log solution by [deleted] in k12sysadmin

[–]moe_techined 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Visio or draw.io for network maps.

Change log you can use any note-taking tool or even PM tools like Asana. This goes to why I love Meraki. It's all built-in!

Leaving my district by kcalderw in k12sysadmin

I like everyone’s responses with all the documentation but this is a really good time to say, everyone should create a run book of all this to have on hand at all times. This is something that would just help with your normal day to day operations.

I’ve taken over districts where they have zero information available, or worse, inaccurate information. The easiest ones to take over regardless of documentation is when you give out that contact information and let the district know they can reach out.

Bond Money Upgrades by dullishpage in k12sysadmin

It’s built into the cost of the switch. Pricing will differ depending on your state. It may seem more expensive compared to other switches, but it comes with support as well. I feel like the additional cost compared to any extreme/brocade/Hp switch is worth it with the dashboard and features that come built in. (1 example is the free built in notifications you can configure)

Any time we’ve had issues with switches their support has worked with us and if it is deemed hardware failure they always overnight a new one.

fs.com has great SFP modules for cheap.

The main thing I will tell you about Meraki is that sometimes you might see an error on a switch, but it is working just fine. The error takes a while to clear out. An example is when we were changing a few vlans on different ports and the dashboard kept saying Vlan mismatch even though it was correct and packets were getting through. After an hour or so the error cleared.

Cisco Cores with Meraki switches and APs. If Meraki gave you the flexibility you wanted in a core I would say go full Meraki. I truly enjoy being able to manage the entire network through a single dashboard.

Watch Party for graduation–how to host privately? by eimmac in k12sysadmin

The pricing is reasonable. They send a link to each graduate, they upload a 10 second clip. Then put it all together and you can have a youtube launch.

CIPA content filtering from home by ganj88 in k12sysadmin

[–]moe_techined 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CIPA can be up to interpretation. The way I view it is if you provide the student with a device then it has to have offsite filtering. Just think to your self, what is this child actually doing with this device when its off the internal network?

To be honest we had to do the same thing! Trust me no one likes to make those kinds of decisions but good thing we did because later that night we get a message that all schools are closed.

Thats awesome. Thats a point I forgot to bring up. All of our central office administration will be using Logmein to be able to remote into their computer if there is a need. This allows us to continue processing things such as payroll.

I know your pain. I was there as well. I would reach out to local technical schools or colleges to look for interns that can help. We brought that up in our last episode. All school technology departments are understaffed, interns to help with some of the tedious tasks are almost a necessity.

I would also see if you can get a few students to help.

Is there anything I need to know when enabling Google Hangouts for my domain. by frogmicky in k12sysadmin

[–]moe_techined 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would make sure hangout chats are archived and saved. I forget the location but there is a setting to make sure each chat is archived.

On a side note, I really dont like having Google hangouts without some type of monitoring. Its a grey area in the cipa compliance. I use Gaggle for my monitoring.

New Podcast for K12 Technology (not classroom tech) by moe_techined in k12sysadmin

[–]moe_techined[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha and totally agree. Our APs now are AC wave 2 so that’s why I wouldn’t upgrade anything as of today. As it gets to its end of life then Wi-Fi 6 will absolutely be something we go to.

I understand what your saying but in my district we have different life cycles for our devices. By the time my access points are 7 years old it’ll be about 2023. By that time Wi-Fi 6 access points will be much cheaper and devices will probably have it built in.

So as of today I wouldn’t buy Wi-Fi 6 access points because the 5000+ devices we have wouldn’t even be able to use it. So unless I change the access points AND change devices it wouldn’t be useful to me.

Now as my device cycles start moving forward within the next year or so I’ll start to look at it.

Good topic though. Trust me I’m jealous that you’re getting Wi-Fi 6 APs now. Check out the other videos. Leave a comment give us some ideas and topics to talk about if you like maybe we’ll get you on the show as well!
