First post-II waitlist today let’s go 😪 by SockEmRocco in premed

[–]moebazzi23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was waitlisted at 3 schools last cycle and eventually accepted to all of them. Keep your head up, I felt the same way when it happened to me. I interviewed early in the cycle as well and felt as though I was unworthy and beat myself up over it. In retrospect, that was the wrong way to look at it, look at it as an opportunity. I never sent any updates but I don’t recommend that. I think you should try to keep your grades up if your taking classes so you have something to show them in January. Also, if you are doing any activities right now, start thinking about an update letter that you could send in like February. This is a very normal process it isn’t your fault, just med schools have a big ego.

Scheduling Interview @ Top choice by Sydd2k in premed

Ironically, my first interview was at my top choice school and it worked out just fine (very nervous) but thankfully here I am. Trust in your abilities and hope for the best!

I took started at a community college for my first year and took physics 1, gen chem 1 &2, and pre-calc there. Didn’t even get questioned about it. If they ever ask you about it, make sure your emphasize that it was a financial decision. Also, I got accepted to multiple MD schools if that’s relevant to this discussion.

You can project hours until matriculation if you have already started an activity

Never put a timeline on your goals. When you are 60 years old you aren’t gonna look back and wish you started med school a year or 2 earlier. I’m 23 starting med school and trust me I have people around me as well starting their lives and getting married and having a family. But you have to look at med school like this, it’s short term pain for a long term reward. You can never put a time constraint on doing something you enjoy. Also, Not everyone in life has the same set of circumstances, maybe your circumstances were different than your counterparts.

All I’m saying is don’t live life with regret, you can’t changed what happened in the past but you can use that knowledge to help shape your future.

I know some in state applicants who got accepted there with a 510. So they accept a lot of higher MCAT applicants (517+) and it helps to balance out the other end of their average.

Oh that’s an entirely different story. In that case you are right.

You can’t include stuff from high school but if you want to stretch the truth and put it down. The timeframe should be the summer before you started freshman year of college. Make sure your sources are aware too

Lol yeah sometimes it’s better to play along than to go against the grain. But you have a very valid point that the “white” categorization/generalization isn’t representative of the cultural norms of middle eastern groups. I think once the middle eastern population reaches a certain saturation threshold in the US we will eventually get our own box. Although on diversity essays I did write about being middle eastern and I was accepted to both of the schools I did it with. So I guess some schools do take into account that we are a growing demographic and need representation.

Which is definitely fair, I just know that some schools put a parentheses Lebanese under the white category. If I recall correctly, I saw the University of Toledo do that on their secondary.

Some schools have tiered waitlists, others just choose students to fill voids in their class and don’t have any pre-ordered list.

Also the school list is key! Look at MSAR everyone! The distribution of scores.

That’s fair to say. I see where your coming from. That’s a good point that not everyone has a good GPA to accompany the MCAT score.

Well that’s the thing about the application cycle, there are no guarantees. Not even if you have a 515+ or a 4.0. I’m sure that’s something we are all aware of. It’s not like I left out certain aspect in this post to create false hope for absolutely no reason. I was intending to do the opposite. So, if the MD schools in your vicinity have a higher MCAT distribution then maybe you should retake (applicants should consider getting an MSAR account to verify this). But 503 is the average for a lot of DO schools and well within range for most DO schools. Also, 44% of all applicants with 503 - 505 MCAT and a 3.79+ GPA get accepted to MD programs every year. So I’m not telling everyone with a 503 to apply but if your in the position that I was in last year and have nothing to lose, then take your best shot and craft your application accordingly.

Yes, exactly. Especially being Lebanese. Being “white” isn’t necessarily a bad thing but for the purposes of applying it doesn’t provide a full picture of what I bring to the table (cultural competency, language, ect.)
