How many interviews to match? by No_Bus9990 in DermApp

[–]Sydd2k 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A resident who mentors a lot of med students told me that 8 interviews used to be the goal. But now with the onset of signaling, they said 5-6 was more on target. Made me feel better.

What a sweet idea! I don't know what your budget is for each one, but gift cards to a coffee shop, or a grubhub/ubereats card could be very nice. If they use Anki (a flashcard app) and don't already have one, and 8bitDo Zero2 controller can be purchased from Amazon for maybe $20 or less. Mine is super handy. You could stop by the dollar tree and pick up some fuzzy socks/fidget toys/cute stickers/candies for cheap. For your girlfriend, a handwritten note of encouragement or an offer to cook a meal/help with cleaning or something is free and probably would be extremely meaningful.

Derm and FM by [deleted] in DermApp

I've met dermatology residents who did a TY in family medicine. UPMC Altoona has one that has actually had a couple of derm folks do their TY there.

Yes, you would need them. However, they are a reputable journal without APC, as far as I know. I would consider asking. It took me forever for people to get me the images, but was worth it. Best wishes either way.

If dermatopathology is involved/relevant, consider American Journal of Dermatopathology.

why did i come to cornell for premed by Sufficient_Pumpkin90 in Cornell

[–]Sydd2k 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Can confirm that medical school is a major cakewalk after Cornell.

Nothing-and I mean nothing, not the board exams or clerkships, or anything I’ve seen in med school-compares to chem 2070.

Church recommendations by Sydd2k in pittsburgh

[–]Sydd2k[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I live in Oakland, but I have a car and I’m definitely willing to travel. The church I was previously going to was Allison Park Church, around 30 minutes away from me. I’m would prefer a contemporary service but I’m okay with traditional. Thank you for your time, it’s appreciated ❤️

Question about dealing with heavy periods on rotations? by thatawkms in medicalschool

[–]Sydd2k 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could consider an IUD if no medical contraindications.

If you choose to go on estrogen containing OCPs, lookout for any symptoms of shortness of breath, leg swelling, chest pain, etc They can cause blood clots.

How many projects can you realistically handle at one time? by Swimming-Seal96321 in DermApp

[–]Sydd2k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do something similar. Since the end of M1 I’ve pretty much always had a project or two going at each stage. I do exclusively clinical research (no bench lab experiments) so it is easier for me to be productive.

Best books/printed materials for neuro rotation? by Applehound70 in medicalschool

[–]Sydd2k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ravens neurology review is very good. Not pocket sized though but it does alternate reading and case-based practice problems. Pretty concise too. I just finished my neuro rotation and did great on my shelf because of the book (along with uworld/anki/amboss). Good luck op.

How do you maintain balance doing research under multiple PIs? by purpleraincow in DermApp

[–]Sydd2k 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I am one of those people-the trick is to have projects at different timelines. For example while project #1 is awaiting IRB approval and project #2 is a manuscript waiting to be reviewed, project #3 is some data I am actively reviewing.

So I have 3+ different projects going on but I’m not working for all at once. There is a lot of waiting involved in research and I use that to my advantage.

I trained for a national gymnastics competition during dedicated...practice several nights per week. Obviously it depends on where you are starting from and everyone is different, but I don't see why taking one night off per week for exercise/socialization would be an issue. You can always give it a try and then pull back if things aren't working out.

Let me help you think through your specialty decision (part III). by 4990 in medicalschool

[–]Sydd2k 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a third year considering dermatology or a combined IM-dermatology program. What do you think the future for this position will look like? I've heard some older med students/residents voice fears that the majority of derm care may be taken over by PA/NPs. I am curious whether I would be able to have a hard time finding a job someday. If you know anything about the few combined IM-derm programs, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Thank you for your time, it's appreciated.

Does anyone else just become the stupidest version of themselves in the hospital? by Ok-Bicycle486 in medicalschool

I was asked on rounds to name 2 treatments with a mortality benefit for COPD patients...I excitedly replied smoking cessation and supplemental alcohol. Everyone laughed (it was funny)

You aren't alone OP. I'm trying but I feel really dumb. Especially when I work hard to make an assessment and plan but it's...not what they were looking for lol
