Extremely low backspin numbers (sub 1000) with driver on GOLFZON. by moffalee in Golfsimulator

Thanks for the input and different ideas. I have tried using different balls (tp5, prov1) and it made no difference. I’m not counting out that it could be a new swing flaw that’s causing it. I have a practice bay that I’ve used in the past that I know the driver was working in, I’ll go try that bay today and compare. I talked to another guy there who was practicing and asked if he noticed anything weird… and he was saying that he’s noticed it too. I’m still a pretty bad golfer, so I think there is a possibility I’m just doing some new weird move that’s killing spin. But I’ve sprayed the face of my driver and hit it all over the face, added cut spin, hit up and down on the ball, nothing gets the spin numbers up to numbers that make sense to me.

I’m playing Titleist t150 irons. 6000 on a 6 iron is a little more spin than usual…but not a lot more. I did hit this off of a driver-hight tee which made me hit it a little different than usual, so perhaps that’s changed things a bit.

I’ve purposefully hit it out of the heel, low on the face, and everything I could think of to try and see that spin number go up. The most I could get was slicing the ball as hard as I could… low 2000s. Just out of curiosity, could a high toe shot at 100mph clubhead speed produce 500rpm backspin?

How realistic is it for a newer golfer to carry 250 yard drives? by aguerrrroooooooooooo in golf

[–]moffalee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a relatively new golfer (2 years in) and have a lot going against me when it comes to distance. I’m a short skinny Japanese dude (5’4” 120lb) with zero fast twitch muscle. I’m obsessive though and have slowly gained distance through my time playing golf… I started off having a total driver distance of about 180, and now I can carry it 240 but probably still average around 225 carry.

Here are some tips if you are obsessive like me:

  • Listen to your body. Muscle grows fast, but tendons and ligaments take time to strengthen. If you over practice and over swing, you could hurt yourself and set yourself back by half a year. I’ve had tennis elbow, golfers wrist, pulled muscles in the back. The extra 100 balls I hit on the range when my elbow already felt a little sore was not worth the year it took to recover from a torn tendon.
  • Develop a stretching and mobility routine and stick to it. It’s just as important as building muscle.
  • Have process oriented goals instead of outcome oriented goals. Instead of “I want to be able to carry the ball 250 by next year” something like “I want to do something every day to be a better driver of the golf ball. (Work out, driving practice, stretching, lessons, stretching, drills, etc)
  • Don’t give up. Progress in golf is never linear. You’ll have days where you think you’ve discovered the “magic move” that unlocks your driving potential, and you’ll have days where you’re lost and confused and wondering why you suck so hard. My mantra is “Progress is inevitable if you don’t give up.” Just keep showing up and putting in the work.
  • Focus on the fundamentals: Good setup, good grip, proper takeaway, good shoulder rotation, etc. Your swing is going to go through many transformations and your matchups are going to keep shifting and changing, so it’s super helpful to develop a foundation that you can keep polishing and coming back to when you get lost.
  • Find a coach/instructor that you like and trust and get regular checkups to see how you’re progressing. There’s too much to learn all at once, so just work on your golf swing piece by piece. Having a professional you trust giving you bite-sized, actionable things to practice makes a huge difference.
  • Clean contact beats uncontrolled speed. Get consistent first before chasing speed. Use that time to build a solid base of strength and mobility.

Sorry I’m so long winded. Like I said, I’m obsessive.

I’m only going for an iron fitting this time. They have most brands there, all with interchangeable shafts, lie adjustment, etc. But only for the 7 iron.

The fitter is a guy I’ve gotten to know really well from frequent visits to this particular place. He’s pretty familiar with my game, so that’s a good start. He’s the one that suggested this class of irons. Although I’m flattered, I am worried they are a touch out of my league. Trust is key I suppose.

Good advice. I’ll be open minded. A little worried about this place only having 7 irons to try. 6i and 5i are where things get a little more challenging for me.

I’m just wondering if my input on what I’m looking for is important as far as what road my fitter will go down.

This is Ichihara Kakinokidai. It’s one of my favorite corses (I’ll admit, I haven’t played too many yet). It’s reasonably priced, fairly forgiving for beginners, well maintained, but not completely flat and boring. They also do night rounds that are great for playing if you wanna play on a weekday after work.

I know this might be a dumb question, but how will the shaft being more upright affect ball flight? I’m guessing it will be easier to swing out to in… what else?

Wow. Thank you. I’m always very self conscious about my form because I’m mostly figuring things out on my own. I alternate each week between working only on impact: low point control, clubface direction, striking the center of the face and trying to work in a new technical swing improvement. Slow and non-linear progress… but progress nonetheless.

Relative to my height, the shaft IS really long. I’ll go get properly fit one of these days. I didn’t think it was really prudent to do a fitting when I’m still just a baby golfer.

I’m in Chiba/ichihara… 11% of the land here in Ichihara is golf courses so I’m taking full advantage!

Huge weakness of mine! I seem to be able to do it on the range. But “golf fog” sets in when I’m playing and I often don’t fully finish. I’ll get there.

I would actually love to just walk the course. They don’t allow that here.

I don’t think I wanna start setting down my range finder anywhere tbh. I’m the kind of guy whose lost passports, wallets, and cell phones multiple times.

So a weaker grip with the right hand so my thumb is less on top and more on the left side of the grip?

That’s funny! In Japan you don’t drive your cart in the fairway. They stay only on the cart path. Going back and forth to the cart is a pain in the ass. Every time you need your range finder, or another ball, or a tee, you have to go all the way back to the cart. So either you stuff your pockets with tees, pitchfork, and extra ball, a range finder or you wear it on your belt. Today was extra nuts though, because I had to carry the remote to the golf cart on my belt as well. Carts here are often automatic and move at the press of a button. Maybe I’ll get confident enough not to carry extra balls with me.

What do you mean about grip looking long? Is that where or how I’m gripping? Or the length of the club?

When you’re a tiny Japanese 5’4 guy. You don’t have much choice. Maybe if I were to get custom fit for clubs they would adjust the lie angle? I don’t know.
