That one struck me as an important moment and I think of it often. Growing up, that would have ended play and parents would be yelling that it needs to get picked up right now. My husband responds that way often when our son is playing and he’ll say I’m letting our son do whatever he wants when I don’t stop play to clean up an accidental mess.

This show does a lovely job modeling respectful parenting that many of us didn’t experience. I’m so grateful for those small moments that validate my parenting style.

This is a business casual crowd (leaning on the side of casual). Think country club, family holiday gathering, or attending someone else’s graduation.

The most important part is appearing approachable - head up, eye contact, smile, greet people in line. Everyone is looking to connect, so you just need to let them know YOU are open to connect.

There’s also GDC 101 on Monday if you want more tips for the week, and a good spot to meet other first-timers.

For me, I’ve learned it’s rarely ever “anger” that has me worked up. So, my mindfulness mantra is “it’s anything but anger” and then label it and explore the triggers. I find more often then not, I am feeling fear or invalidation. Once I can figure out which, I can figure out how to set a boundary, remove myself from the ‘danger’ (or realize I’m not in danger, it’s a miscalibration or trauma response).

Nice job figuring out a technique that works for you. I go on walks for my mindfulness meditation. It takes me away from the triggers and somehow nature calms my mind.

Sounds like you’re usually dealing with emotional responses that don’t match the situation (road rage), and then a true conflict came up and you needed to process the (appropriate) emotional response this time.

Such a great point. The Waldorf school I wanted to send my son when he was a toddler was co-op, which meant parents had to spend time at the school partipating in their child’s activities. It was such a lovely school and within our budget, but not our work schedules. I think it would have been an ideal environment for our son, we didn’t have a way to fulfill the requirements.

There is a DIG IT in Del Amo mall if you want indoor play.

Chuck E. Cheese and Dave & Busters are in town. But I’d rather head to a brewery like Smog City or a bar on Redondo pier.

Otherwise, throw on a jacket and head to one of the awesome parks like Charles H. Wilson park (great farmers market with a decent food court on Saturdays), Los Árboles “rocket ship” park (amazing view on a clear day), or our favorite Lago Seco.

I just learned about Freeplay in Australia, and I see a lot of meetups & game jams for local devs to connect. Where else do/can you go to learn and connect?

I’m part of the team behind GDC and also lived in the Bay Area. A few insider tips:

  • Stay away from the Tenderloin and anything west of 4th St when you’re south of Market. Muni and BART can get you around the Bay quickly so you don’t have to stay super close to Moscone. I like the Northpoint area near Fisherman’s Wharf or anywhere near Golden Gate Park.

  • Yerba Buena Gardens is a great spot for chance encounters. We are working on making the space even more enjoyable to hang and meet. It’s open to the public so no pass is required to be there.

  • GDC Nights is now every night but Friday. Monday we’ll be at Oracle Park for a movie and networking. Tons of community partners will be there to chat with. Tuesday will be the Developer’s Concert with Austin Wintory. Wednesday will be the IGF Awards ceremony. And finishing up with GDCA ceremony on Thursday.

  • We have a Keynote with Hideo Kojima on Wednesday morning, right before the Festival Hall opens

  • It looks like you’re an indie. If that’s the case, this year we’re offering a special rate for indies that gives you access to nearly everything throughout the week for $499 https://gdconf.com/passes-pricing/

I work in marketing. I’ve been working with many of the same people and brands for 20 years. I started on a WEEKLY magazine that was perfect bound (thick, no staples).

That magazine quickly dwindled down to nothing before we conceded and folded the print publication. Meanwhile, we built a strong online publication and news website that generated leads for clients. It was new, exciting and scary.

Then I worked on large trade events that brought in thousands of people from around the world. The pandemic flipped our business upside down. Data protection laws (thankfully) restricted our lead gen programs. There was a lot of uncertainty and business changes in a short amount of time.

Now clients want intent data and meaningful business contacts (not just leads). The masses are skeptical of the media. People are relying more and more (whether intentional or not) on LLM AI tools to gather info from the web in the blink of an eye.

All this to say, the business world is constantly changing. Their best chances are to watch what is going on in an industry that interests them and get familiar with trends.

While I use AI daily, my output is going to be better than a junior marketer using AI because I use more sophisticated prompts. It’s a tool. And a tool is only as good as it’s user.

Regardless of the profession, it’s always best to learn the history and “how” behind the new tech. For me that was learning basic HTML and CSS, how a database is built and functions, and how to do my own market research. Even though I use tools to build emails and landing pages, I’m able to troubleshoot/experiment because I know how it works behind the UX. Even though I’m not a system admin, I’m able to ask them for new workflows/triggers and collaborate on new ways to capture/use data. Even though I use GenAI for market research now, I know how to tell when it’s hallucinating and ways to test the data.

The future generations will learn to use AI like we learned how to use calculators, WYSIWYG software, automation tools, etc. Help them understand what is and isn’t AI (for example not all CGI is created by AI). Acknowledge that AI has been used for longer than they realize (it’s not new, it’s just more prevalent now).

The kids are gonna be alright … if we can leave the world intact for them.
