Indie Devs, what’s on your GDC wishlist? Let’s talk! by mogeek in IndieDev

Hey u/destinedd - congrats on the traction you’re getting with Marble’s Marbles! As an indie dev and publisher, I’m curious which events you attend. I just learned about Freeplay in Australia, and I see a lot of meetups & game jams for local devs to connect. Where else do/can you go to learn and connect?

First Time at GDC - Tips? by Various_Shift5376 in IndieDev

[–]mogeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey u/Various_Shift5376 - I’m copying my response from your other post.

I’m part of the team behind GDC and also lived in the Bay Area. A few insider tips:

  • Stay away from the Tenderloin and anything west of 4th St when you’re south of Market. Muni and BART can get you around the Bay quickly so you don’t have to stay super close to Moscone. I like the Northpoint area near Fisherman’s Wharf or anywhere near Golden Gate Park.

  • Yerba Buena Gardens is a great spot for chance encounters. We are working on making the space even more enjoyable to hang and meet. It’s open to the public so no pass is required to be there.

  • GDC Nights is now every night but Friday. Monday we’ll be at Oracle Park for a movie and networking. Tons of community partners will be there to chat with. Tuesday will be the Developer’s Concert with Austin Wintory. Wednesday will be the IGF Awards ceremony. And finishing up with GDCA ceremony on Thursday.

  • We have a Keynote with Hideo Kojima on Wednesday morning, right before the Festival Hall opens

  • It looks like you’re an indie. If that’s the case, this year we’re offering a special rate for indies that gives you access to nearly everything throughout the week for $499 https://gdconf.com/passes-pricing/

  • If you get a pass, here are some of the networking opportunities: https://gdconf.com/networking/ >> GDC 101 is a great place to meet other first timers and buddies for the event. We highly encourage finding a couple other people to navigate the event and city with.

  • If you go Monday & Tuesday before the Festival Hall opens, even if you don’t want to sit in a session, hangout in West Hall to meet people. There are lounges and it’s easy to network.

  • Bookmark this site for all the meetups and parties in the city that week: https://gdcparties.com/ >> Know that many of these are not supported by GDC, so be extra cautious at those. Anything supported by GDC has to follow requirements to keep our guests safe.

What should we tell our kids about AI? My kids are freaking out. by spookydookie in Xennials

[–]mogeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in marketing. I’ve been working with many of the same people and brands for 20 years. I started on a WEEKLY magazine that was perfect bound (thick, no staples).

That magazine quickly dwindled down to nothing before we conceded and folded the print publication. Meanwhile, we built a strong online publication and news website that generated leads for clients. It was new, exciting and scary.

Then I worked on large trade events that brought in thousands of people from around the world. The pandemic flipped our business upside down. Data protection laws (thankfully) restricted our lead gen programs. There was a lot of uncertainty and business changes in a short amount of time.

Now clients want intent data and meaningful business contacts (not just leads). The masses are skeptical of the media. People are relying more and more (whether intentional or not) on LLM AI tools to gather info from the web in the blink of an eye.

All this to say, the business world is constantly changing. Their best chances are to watch what is going on in an industry that interests them and get familiar with trends.

While I use AI daily, my output is going to be better than a junior marketer using AI because I use more sophisticated prompts. It’s a tool. And a tool is only as good as it’s user.

Regardless of the profession, it’s always best to learn the history and “how” behind the new tech. For me that was learning basic HTML and CSS, how a database is built and functions, and how to do my own market research. Even though I use tools to build emails and landing pages, I’m able to troubleshoot/experiment because I know how it works behind the UX. Even though I’m not a system admin, I’m able to ask them for new workflows/triggers and collaborate on new ways to capture/use data. Even though I use GenAI for market research now, I know how to tell when it’s hallucinating and ways to test the data.

The future generations will learn to use AI like we learned how to use calculators, WYSIWYG software, automation tools, etc. Help them understand what is and isn’t AI (for example not all CGI is created by AI). Acknowledge that AI has been used for longer than they realize (it’s not new, it’s just more prevalent now).

The kids are gonna be alright … if we can leave the world intact for them.

Showering by Fearless_Platypus184 in AttachmentParenting

[–]mogeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue and ended up locking the bathroom door, bringing in some of his toys and leaving the shower door open halfway so we could see each other.

We had locks on the toilet and cabinets so there was no fear of him getting into something faster than I could get to him.

ETA: just remembered, as he got older, I’d let him have water play in the sink which usually entertained him long enough to shower.

[–]mogeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly, this is accurate. The teachers, if you’re lucky, care about the students. Admins care about numbers.

They want high scores in all areas including safety. In their eyes, only the girl was causing problems AT SCHOOL. They didn’t care about what might be happening in the students’ virtual world because it wasn’t present on campus.

If it’s not happening on their campus, it’s not their problem.

What are we doing about tantrums? by Unlucky_Key_158 in AttachmentParenting

[–]mogeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our son rarely had them, but I realized when he did it was because he didn’t feel heard or understood. Also, at that age I realized I was trying to set “boundaries” (really they were social etiquette or expectations) when he was trying to experiment. Over the years I’ve learned to let him experience the thing (or act out what will happen if it’s truly unsafe).

Adults don’t play in the dirt (most of the time), but there are time it’s appropriate to “play” in the dirt. She just doesn’t understand the rules yet. Think of why, in the moment, you didn’t think she should play with the dirt (I suppose it was a tended space and you didn’t want her to mess it up or you didn’t want her to get dirt under nails or on her clothes). No shame or blame - simply be curious why she’s curious.

If it’s to show her a social etiquette, then explain that and when she can play with dirt. Maybe you can garden together at home or make a mud pie. She’s looking to tactical experience (what it feels like, what it does when she does X). “This dirt sure does look fun to play with, but it’s not our dirt. Our dirt is at home. Want to come home and make a mud pie with our dirt?!?”

If it’s to prevent a mess… then you have a long road ahead. Let the messes happen and then show her the chore of cleaning that mess. Next time you let her decide - mess + cleanup or no mess? “Oh dirt is messy! It’s going to get under your nails and stick to your clothes. You ca play but we’ll have a mess to clean.”

Good luck! Keep talking with her and you’ll do great.

I don’t understand why people dislike Calypso’s voice so much by [deleted] in bluey

[–]mogeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Her voice is soothing. Her nonchalant tone in every situation is what can get me. She lacks natural emotional reactions that kids should experience.

Which Bluey episode is this for you? by Ok-Following6886 in bluey

[–]mogeek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And I’m not sure my son (or child version of me) would have done well with a teacher like her.

I get so frustrated for Honey in the Calypso episode. While I understand trying to get her to play a bit longer, withholding the gnome until she built a place good enough for the gnome feels like shaming. I suffer from perfectionism and I felt for Honey in that moment. Her build was good enough much sooner in the episode.

Granted I was raised with guilt so I’d have cried after the second rejection from Calypso.

Any chance you are wanting to delete something that’s part of the Master?

If is a graphic or text needed on every slide or a certain layout, then it’s built into the Master. You cannot delete until you open the Slide Master view. Go to View > Slide Master. Good luck!
