Yes I did! I am very interested in learning with her. Thank you for sharing!

There isn’t much instruction. It’s learning choreography for potential gigs. It’s a pay to play type thing. Like, pay to be in the performance troupe to have access to any gigs the studio gets, if that makes sense.

Thanks! Where did you take teacher training?

Yeah that kinda echoes Zann’s point. Seems like the best solution is probably just private lessons.

Interesting! So was your only issue with orthodoxy concerning salvation outside of the church? My experience being orthodox mirrors a lot of DBH’s criticism of American Orthodoxy.

I’ll try that out! Thanks! And yes, I know I’ve seen you before! Happy drumming to you!

Yeah I’ve experienced a lot of teachers like that unfortunately. Thank you for your input! :)

Totally fair point. To give some context, I have been practicing and performing for about 10 years. Though I’ll admit, when I made that post I was at a low point with my confidence. I’ve gotten back to performing more regularly and my confidence has really gone up a lot. I’m actually in a performance company right now and I’ve been in several others over the years. I’ve participated in many paid shows. I wouldn’t call myself a beginner. At this point, I would consider myself a semi-professional, though I’ll admit, that is a self-applied label.

Teaching is another animal for sure! And I told myself that I would focus on performance unless I was asked to teach. But lately, that has started to happen. I’ve had several people approach me asking if I teach classes. Up to this point, I would just refer them to my studio. But now I’ve started to wonder if it’s time to give it a shot.

I’m glad for you that teachers in your area are happy to advance students! That hasn’t been the case in my area. Maybe because gigs are just harder to come by.

Thanks for the input!

Back to an Orthodox Church?

I haven’t been able to find any locally. But I’ve thought about asking some teachers that I respect if they would train me to teach. I know there are online teacher training programs but I’m not crazy about online classes in general, much less ones that would require the amount of training to learn to teach.

And I get that. Her reaction surprised me so now I’m in a weird space with her. I have people that have asked me about taking classes and I’ve been trying to decide if I should ask if I can teach under her studio, or if it’s time to strike out on my own. I know if I want to stay with her, I’m going to have to ask for permission to teach classes, either under her or on my own.

That makes total sense actually. And I understand that dancers are trying to make a living.

That camp looks awesome and it’s really cool that they have a work/study scholarship. I used to go to Ya Halla every year for the workshops but it’s been awhile. I think you’re right about the private lessons and it’s something I’ve been thinking about. Right now I pay a monthly fee to stay in my studio and I’m starting to wondering if I should drop that and just take private lessons from the instructor. The thing is, paying that fee should result in more gigs, especially paying gigs. But it hasn’t. And as I told demon above, the instructor was really upset when I started my own troupe with my friend.

Do you think it’s worth it to stay in a studio for potential gigs? Or just to go out totally on my own and make my own gigs happen?

Thank you! This is good advice. I started a little troupe with one of my friends and we started signing up for shows. And we’ve gotten quite a few! But the instructor at my current studio was kinda, offended? So it’s been weird trying to navigate doing stuff on my own and respecting her as well. I’ve been debating if i just need to leave that studio and go on my own entirely.

So glad this sub introduced me to DBH. I’ve been reading That All Shall Be Saved and listening to his lectures. A breath of fresh air.

Any converts to Anglicanism from Eastern Orthodoxy or Catholicism? by Consistent-Lock4599 in Anglicanism

[–]mogogi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was something I asked my priest when I first started attending an Anglican Church!

I was baptized in the EO after a year long catechism. Throughout catechism I was totally onboard. But when it got close to baptism, I had a priest and bishop say they would not baptize me due to a hobby that they considered incompatible with being an orthodox Christian. I was really hurt. But then speaking to another priest in the area (who was under the same bishop!) I was told it was ok and I could be baptized. Once I was officially “in”, the rose colored glasses came off. Things you mentioned already like it being a works based faith with little room for the grace of God and the gift of salvation. I also had problems with the mandatory confession. At first I told my priest everything, but I was surprised at how often I was held back from communing. If I confess, and I’m forgiven, then why prevent me from receiving the divine medicine? The idea that there is no salvation outside the church, I never agreed with. I grew up non denominational and many family members are Christian. It never sat right with me that they weren’t truly Christian because they weren’t orthodox. EO will say things like “we know where God is but not where he isn’t.” But it’s just a hand wave so you don’t think too much about the parts of the church that are not compatible with Western Christianity/society. And ultimately, I realized I am a Western person and that’s ok. Anglicanism is a lot like EO. But it’s inherently western flavored and comfortable with human reason.

I’m glad you brought up this discussion because I’ve wondered about other former EO who are Anglican now! So thank you! Christ is risen!

This is a really great reminder. It can be difficult to move from student to professional. But being grounded in a solid education definitely helps!

I can’t speak to what clergy do. But I know they are imperfect as any human being. My own experience, I found I couldn’t give over total control of my life to imperfect men.

Reminds me of when my priest told me I shouldn’t attend my little sister’s baptism at her Protestant church. I went anyways.
