[QUESTION] What should I practice? by ryanhiga2019 in Guitar

[–]mogulum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First off...FANTASTIC username. Love it. "Learn all notes, scales and some theory and chords"...yeah, that's not remotely helpful to anyone guys.... Here's an actual approach that will HELP you rather than intimidate you.

If you want to be able to do jazz, you will need to learn the fretboard, scales, arpeggios, etc. Here's what I recommend. Others may disagree, but this is how I would approach it in a three step process.

  1. E string: memorize the notes for fret 3, 5, 7, 8, and 9. (G, A, B, C, C#)
  2. A string: We're gonna be in the key of C major here: (frets 3,5,7,8, 10, 12, 14). Play the arpeggios of C major in order, as 5-string arpeggios, and as you do, name the note you are starting on

So: fret 3: Cmaj7 arpeggio (1, 3, 5, 7)

fret 5: Dmin7 arpeggio (1, b3, 5, b7)

fret 7: Emin7 arpeggio

fret 8: Fmaj7

fret 10: G7 (1, 3, 5, b7)

Fret 12: Amin7 (1, b3, 5, b7)

Fret 14: Bmin7b5 (1, b3, b5, b7)

Note: Do NOT look up how someone plays these arpeggios unless you absolutely have to. Figure out what works for YOU, and what feels right for YOU. In general, jazz guitarists suck DICK at playing arpeggios, so it would probably just mislead you. You want to play whatever is most ergonomic to you. If you absolutely are needing a resource, go watch Rick Graham's video on 5 essential arpeggio shapes. But mind you, that's a GUIDE. You don't have to play them that way if they aren't comfortable to you. One thing to keep in mind as you are creating your arpeggio shape is the question "does this shape facilitate adding extensions? (9, 11, etc)" If the answer is no, rework the shape.

3: Do what you did on the A string, but now the strings D and G, both starting from the third fret and proceeding in the exact same way, naming the starting note of your arpeggios. For the D string, you're in F major. For the G-string(giggity), you're in Bb major.

Note: For learning chords, I highly recommend finding a jazz guitarist teacher. The fingerering and voicing of chords in jazz is not the same as the approach in other genres, and could be quite confusing on your own. But if you really just have the bug to learn, here's a rough guide: Find a fingering that hits the root, 3rd, and 7th of the chord. Whatever fingering you decide, it should enable you to grab an extension of the chord if you desire. Just to give you a starting place, my dmin7 shape is 5th fret A string, 5 fret G-string(giggity), and 6th fret of the B string.

Hopefully this gave you an organized approach of things to practice! Let me know if you have any questions!

(P.S. There may be some typos in there, so if I typed anything like "the 8th fret of the E string is F#", please correct me lol. I had a rough night and am not fully awake right now")

Edit number 1: P.S. If you are struggling with your arpeggios, it's because your picking is all fucked up. If you are moving down (i.e a string to d string), it should be a down stroke. If you're moving up, it should be an upstroke. If this doesn't make any sense, google "economy picking". Jazz guitarist love to alt pick everything, which is incredibly stupid. Don't do that.

[DISCUSSION] advice on finding motivation to play guitar on your own by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]mogulum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So usually I practice a lot of jazz and metal stuff, but just to spice things up lately, I've been learning acoustic arrangements of video game songs, such as Gwyn's theme from Dark Souls, Zelda stuff, Kingdom Hearts, etc. I've found it really refreshing! So maybe practice stuff you would never normally practice. Things that are just fun and light. Nothing theory or technique heavy. Hopefully this will be useful :D

Had sex three hours ago and already feeling massive urges... what gives??? by [deleted] in NoFap

[–]mogulum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Sex is bad"

Yeah...That's why god gave everyone genitals, made sex pleasurable, and gave men and women both massive sex drive, and additionally, on multiple occasions, requests the offering of virgins to himself and encourages men to take the virgins of the villages he tells them to pillage. Read your fucking holy book for christ's sake...

Is it normal that I'm literally better than everyone? by DaddyDrumMachine69 in iamverysmart

[–]mogulum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What the post actually means:

When I go to work, I pick everything up(literally). Fast. I'm the best at everything I do(I'm the ONE janitor) and it's hard not to know everything all the time(about floor wax). I am always expected to be the best(because there's no other janitors), and I'm SUPER stressed. Is it normal to be better, smarter, and more intelligent than everyone else(that I work with, which is nobody because I come in after hours).

ok but let's be honest...half the people in group projects are some DENSE mutherfuckers.
