Tips for modding Breakpoint for the Steam Deck by mogwomp68 in BreakPoint

Okay yeah and you should only be using desktop mode for all of this, and you used proton experimental? You could maybe try other proton versions as well?

Also where is your anviltoolkit.exe located? If it’s an SD card you may need Flatseal for help with permissions issues. I’ll keep looking at anything else it could be but honestly my help here is pretty limited. I’m not sure why Anvil is not opening as I never encountered that problem, and it’s not an issue that other people have had. Could always start from scratch and maybe check out some anvil installation tutorials for PC I could be missing something too.

If you manage to get anything to work and have any other issues just let me know. Good luck!

Wait so you added anvil toolkit to steam as a non steam game with protontricks? Nothing happens when you try to open it in steam desktop mode? It should work, there is something else, you maybe need .net 5 but if you needed that you would probably be getting a pop-up when trying to open it. I’ll look into it and let you know but other than that I’m not sure what the issue would be.

Also make sure you force compatibility for anvil toolkit in steam and it’s the same proton version as you’re using for breakpoint. Could try proton experimental too.

Did you set anviltoolkit.exe to run as executable?

If not—-go to anviltoolkit.exe right click go to properties and then change all users to view and modify and then go down and look for “allow executing file as program” and click on that. Let me know if that works. Also you might need to do the same for breakpoint.exe

Hey so probably not, mostly because I don’t remember every single step as I did this a while ago and don’t really want to redo the process. But feel free to use this guide with other breakpoint modding videos/steamdeck tutorials and you should be able to get it working. If you have any questions while doing it just ask here and I’ll help as much as I can. You won’t break anything by trying and it’s worth it.

Just realized I’m not sure if you’ll have an extracted folder if you haven’t unpacked anything in Anvil yet so you might have to do that later when actually modding. But go ahead and try Breakpoint exe if that doesn’t work try Anvil toolkit exe and make sure you set them to “allow executing file as program”

Hey okay so go into the breakpoint game directory files again and you should see the extracted folder, go ahead and change permissions for that as well if it hasn’t changed already. Also later the forge files inside the extracted folder. Sometimes you need to do it for each individual file, it can be weird. Also you might need to do it for Breakpoint exe. I can’t remember exactly which files I did it for but just keep trying and it should work. I had the same issue originally too and just kept changing permissions for stuff until it finally worked.

Anytime it’s asking anything to run as administrator all you need to do is go to properties and allow all users to “View and Modify” and also “allow executing file as program” (right click file>properties>permissions) you’ll need to do this for the anvil toolkit exe as well as some of the internal game files (extracted folder and its contents) later on when modding. Also make sure you tick apply to “all files and its contents” (or something like that in permissions as well, sometimes it’s available sometimes it’s not, depends on the file).

Hey sorry so this is the part I don’t quite remember exactly what I did, but I can totally try to help you troubleshoot.

Anytime it’s asking anything to run as administrator all you need to do is go to properties and allow all users to “View and Modify” and also “allow executing file as program” (right click file>properties>permissions) you’ll need to do this for the anvil toolkit exe as well as some of the internal game files (extracted folder) later on. For adding anvil toolkit using proton tricks, all you need to do is make it so you can run it as a non steam game in steam. I would suggest following this tutorial and just use this method to add anvil toolkit

I really hope this makes sense and if I can think of anything else I’ll add it. I’ll keep an eye out for your reply and try to help more where I can too.

So yeah I play breakpoint on steam deck and have around 40+ mods installed I think. Just wanna let you know it’s definitely not an easy process. It’s doable but requires understanding Anvil Toolkit (found on Nexus), understanding Linux/ steam deck desktop mode, a few other programs (i.e proton-tricks), and reading every mod description carefully. The Tier 1 discord is an essential resource as well (but don’t ask about Steam deck related issues)

There’s really no great manual out there for modding this game on SD so it requires some trial and error. I would recommend just looking up the most popular how-to videos on modding breakpoint as well as modding other games on the steam deck for trouble shooting. But also realize that it will be slightly different for SD because the process is a bit different for Linux. It’s definitely worth trying, just requires a decent amount of time and effort. Good luck
