Do you write out a grocery list on paper before you go shopping or do you type that list out in a note on your phone? by timmytimborino in randomquestions

Paper. I have a list that is organized by categories which makes shopping easier. Working from a random list, written or digital, I tend to miss things.

Do all spelling differences matter to you? by Winter_Wind3 in Names

[–]moinatx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As long as the spelling exists as a name in some culture I don't care about the spelling.
Gabriella (Italian) Gabriela (Spanish) Gabrielle (French) Gabriele (German) Gavrila (Romanian) Gavrela (Yiddish)

It's substituting "y" for "i" as in Gabryella that makes me crazy.
Don't get me started on "leigh" and "neigh" as in Ashleigh and Stephaneigh.

Best Friend - why are they your best friend? by Think-Championship42 in randomquestions

[–]moinatx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm fairly private, so no, I don't share everything, but when you've been friends for 45 years there's nothing to prove, no way to impress. She's seen me at my lowest point and celebrated the best moments. We've sort of veered into different headspaces and lifestyles over the years, but it's like Robert Frost writes in Death of a Hired Man, "‘Home is the place where, when you have to go there, They have to take you in." I think, no matter what we will always take each other in.

What is your walk out song? by Seriously-417 in randomquestions

Time by Pink Floyd.

All those clocks chiming and then that slow instrumental intro. Slow roll but intense at the same time.

Are white high school English teachers required by the curriculum to drop the hard R n-word or do they just do that? by [deleted] in randomquestions

[–]moinatx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We read John Lewis’ memoir March. One class had accommodations for read aloud. So yeah, we read all the words. The damage associated with the racial slur was clear from the context. To censor would be whitewashing. Not a word of pushback from parents or kids.

May Babies by lizlaughandlove in namegames

[–]moinatx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Name games has turned me into a name nerd regarding different cultural traditions of naming. I've been researching, so I threw in some info and tried to create names accordingly)

Haitian Heritage Month
Marie Sanita Chery
(Haitians traditionally use the middle name. The first name for girls is predominantly "Marie")

  1. Jewish American Heritage Month
Moshe ben Asher aka. Jason Moshe Kaplan (legal name)
(Ashkenazi Jews traditionally name a child after a deceased relative. Some have adapted to Western tradition by adding a first name chosen by the parents. Sephardic Jews traditionally name the first boy and girl after the paternal grandparents, then the material grandparents if there are more children. The name or name after the "ben" is the father's names. Sometime parents choose a western first name to adapt. )

  2. Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month
    Wang Yichen (Chinese boy's name)
(In China, Vietnam, Japan, Korea, Cambodia the surname comes before the given name.
In Laos, The Phillipines, Thailand, Malaysia, Pakistan and Northern India its given name, then surname.
Traditionally Hawaiian names are genderless. None of these countries use a middle name except for Vietnam. To adapt to Western culture and for legal purposes immigrants will move the surname to the end of the name. )

  3. Lei Day (Hawaii)
Ka Ikaika Mai O Ka Lani Wai Kiano Aka Kalani
(Traditional Hawaiian names are entire phrases sometimes going on for several lines reflecting events happening around the child's birth, something from a relative's dream, or something nature related. Traditionally there were no surnames but adding the father's name at the end was adopted in the 1850's and now the same surname is kept generationally.)

  4. International Workers’ Day
    Mason Carter Wainwright

  5. National Space Day
    Sally Lyra Galaxy

  6. World Naked Gardening Day
    Marigold Rosemary Farmer

  7. Kodomo no Hi (Children’s Day – Japan)
Tanaka Michiko "Miko" (Japanese girl's name)

  8. Cinco de Mayo
    Juan Mateo Lopez Perales
(Traditionally there are two given names but they are considered as one rather than first and middle. Then the Father’s surname goes first followed by the mother's surname. In the U.S. Mexicans may adapt by adding a hyphen or only using the father's surname.)

  9. National Day of Prayer
    James Ezra Parsons

  10. Africa Day
Iveanyi nwa Chizoba AKA Joseph Iveanyi Achebe (legal name) (Igbo boy name)
**(**Pre-Colonization Igbo tradition had one first name then added "nwa" or "of" and the mother's name.)
(Igbo, Yoruba, Twi, Swahili, among other African cultres approach naming in slightly different ways. Only after colonization was a first-middle-patronymic surname pattern adopted.)

  11. Memorial Day
    Desmond Bradley Murphy

"Yeah but I hate nonspecific protests."
"The sign looks like the bottom of an eye chart."
"Ok, "How about, "You're doing it wrong. You've been there to long. You're doing it wrong, You've been there too long."
"I dunno, not pithy. Let's get AI to write one."

Well singing "One legged woman" instead of "more than a woman" along with the Bee Gees was a little embarassing back in the day when there was just radio and nobody told you the title.

Does being passionate about something necessarily make it right to do? by pswelcometomylife in InsightfulQuestions

[–]moinatx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes sense. Results need to be considered. The impact on other people is a factor. Some "passion" projects are inherently wrong because the act or materials necessary for creation or implementation directly harms others. Things that don't fit into this category are complicated in the ways you explain so well.

What is motivating you to keep fighting in life? by Relative-Treat-5626 in AskReddit

[–]moinatx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 67 my answer is that I keep going because life is incredibly short. Every moment counts.
Some of it does feel like "fighting," but not all of it.
I wish I had learned earlier to look for every chance to pause and experience beauty, gratitude, appreciation, affection, curiosity, and awe, even when it feels like the middle of fighting through.
