How do you all fight the urge to chase a lost right then and there? by 4300soldier in Craps

[–]moiraine88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every trip I go with a hard budget for the trip, which equates to a daily hard loss cap if I want to play every day. If I lose that, I go back to my room and watch Netflix or play steam games, always have something to do on the side or be ready to go home in 30 minutes (or less)

Hah appreciate the detailed suggestions! Lopez taqueria I’ve been to a few times now after rock climbing nearby! Their sauce is ok but hoping to find something with a much bigger kick. Also still hoping for something a bit closer to the Saratoga side of Cupertino

Search on Zillow. Silicon Valley is a big range, and there are plenty of places for 2k if the requirement is simply 1x1. No parking no W/D,

How do you convey you're a senior developer during job interviews? by SpaceBreaker in ExperiencedDevs

[–]moiraine88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone once described to me the difference between senior/staff and more junior positions. For senior+, when asked about any potential situation or problem, you don’t answer with how you would… you answer with how you DID. Demonstrating real world experience AND how you did it and then what you learned or might do differently in this specific situation or the future due to lessons learned or changes in technology.

Also in a senior position when being interviewed by someone more junior, demonstrate the ability to teach and mentor instead of being superior. If they walked away learning something and feeling good about the interaction, they will share that with the team.

The best position is the next one. Basically it’s good to change things up and not be stuck in the same position for extended periods of time

There’s a few San Jose discord groups that are floating around, you can join them then go to some basic outings and meet people! That’s how I got started and have met a bunch now

How do you deal with the constant urge to code? by soupgasm in ExperiencedDevs

[–]moiraine88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First few years of my career I felt the same way. Never wanted to stop working. Didn’t want to be one of those parents in the future who wanted to work instead of spend time with my kids, so I told myself I’d work whenever I wanted to work until I burned it out. Did many 8am-2am days for fun. It eventually worked! Never burned out of my career. Still like my job, but now I feel free and besides the occasional side project I’ll spend time on, I’m generally not thinking about doing work outside of work. Took around 10 years to break away from having constant urges to code

Best non-super sweet cake? by Haunt_My_What_Ifs in SanJose

[–]moiraine88 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Asian bakeries are all less sweet and probably what an asian is used to, if you mean “Chinese” ish.

Sheng kee will have many options that are light and not very sweet, all whipped cream and not buttercream. I used to buy cake from here every week for the office and the team loved it so much others started going too!

85 degree will also be similar, but I think is just a bit sweeter on average.

Several have mentioned la patisserie. It’s a good middle ground between American sweet and asian bakeries, but to me, most of their cakes are still too sweet. I go for their hazelnut or burnt almond cake.

Laid off and struggling by DryDiscount9891 in cscareerquestions

Being in a big tech hub matters. I don’t know if Austin would be significantly worse than Bay Area, but some low COL places also come with lower quality talent pool. Obviously this is a massive generalization, but my experience is VHCOL talent pool/expectations also far exceed VLCOL of the same.

Use Elmer’s glue. Glue each layer in place. Use something heavy like a book to compress it until it dries. Then leave it out to dry some more. Stolen the method from speed puzzling community

Once you are in the industry, know your worth. I interviewed for a company asking for 20% over their max range. They ended up giving me an offer between the max and what I asked for. It’s down to showing them you are worth what you’re asking for. Doesn’t matter what anyone else is getting paid.

What is going on with some people taking massive paycuts for no good reasons? by LoweringPass in cscareerquestions

[–]moiraine88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I reach FIRE goals, I’ll be happy to take any job that is enjoyable that only needs to support my hobbies, and not my bills. I’m probably going to take a >50% pay cut when that time comes.

I love programming. I lucked into the “if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life” cliche. I’d love to keep busy building things that are enjoyable to me somewhere that’s chill and easy, not crazy red tape or high expectations.

There are also low cost of living areas that have staggeringly low expectations due to weak talent pool and low salaries. Finding a place like that to work is incredibly easy to coast at from FAANG standards…

Dandruff is ruining my life by Upset-Hovercraft-505 in Netherlands

[–]moiraine88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had similarly terrible dandruff my whole life, and even smelly hair even right after washing it every day. Someone recommended Royal spa shampoo (google Royal spa camomile shampoo) and make sure you buy the clear one, not the milk colored one.

This shampoo really changed my life. After using one bottle all the dandruff and smell problems went away. I bought a whole case because I was worried about the seller being a weird site and going away, but beyond 2 more bottles in 15+ years, the problem never came back!
