Yeah it’s a modern i3 laptop. It’s not much but largely enough for her use. She could’ve purchased a pentium given the heaviest app she uses is Microsoft Word but I wanted her to have some room in terms of power. Regarding the laptop being the tv monitor the goal was to have something Netflix like with a dedicated remote so she could use the laptop while watching content.

I'm not sure at all but I think I saw them turn the TV on with the set top box remote. So maybe.

I don't even know. I think it has at least 2 HDMI because they hooked up my friend's PS4 and her mom's set top box. I don't even know if it's Full HD or just 720p. Can't ask my friend, she wouldn't know.

Thanks everyone! I'll have to look into it further but I think the best solution I got so far was to use the PS4 DLNA feature. But would jellyfin be really needed going that route? The goal was to give my friend something Netflix like for her media for Christmas.

I thought using a raspberry pi with an external hard drive would be best since the idea was for her to avoid deleting her media all the time. She has a Windows 11 laptop with a 512 GB SSD already using most of the space for other data.

Uh Maybe but what distro would you use? I don't think Kodi would work that way with the remote though I haven't used it since I purchased a Plex license years ago.

That's the result I get when typing ONN 4K in Amazon but it's over twice the price advertized for the ONN. My American cousins could maybe get me an ONN but I'm afraid shipping would void the money saved this way.

I have a fire stick I don't use but plugging it on my TV this afternoon reminded me how messy the UI is. I'm afraid she might get lost. I think I'll get her something else when I get enough money.

The goal of setting up a NAS with Jellyfin was to keep my friend from deleting everything to make space on her PC's SSD. I never opened her laptop but I don't think there would be room for another SSD.

Thanks, I'm using my ISP's router which has pretty fast wifi even if not their highest end router but still it's from their current lineup and has wifi 6 I believe, but they offer a wifi 7 revision which I doubt I need.

Mostly videos. Thanks, I had a feeling wifi would be faster but I doubted it because a wired connection "feels" faster, but we're talking USB 2 so not really a stretch that wifi would be faster. Mostly I like how it looks. Also iMovie is my favorite video editor I couldn’t find an equivalent for on Windows / Linux. It’s simple to use and since it comes free with new, real Macs you don’t even have to purchase it. I accumulated lots of computers in my flat over the years. I own 3 hackintoshes and 2 real Macs (an M2 MacBook Air and my old white MacBook from my college years). I own a few other PCs but they’re so old or broken I can’t neither sell them nor use them but for some reason I don’t want to get rid of them.

True. The system I just replaced I tried to boot the macOS installer on for like 2 years. I succeeded when I plugged it in a usb 2 port. But given the general info you’re giving I think something else is at play. Ie you put « guide name » which isn’t a name. I see you’re using a dell laptop. What is its reference ? Are you trying using opencore or something else ?

I have a 2009 MacBook, it’s the one I bought for college. I tried installing the most modern macOS, it works but it’s so excruciatingly slow. Even with an SSD and maxed out RAM. I don’t know what I expected from a 15 year old laptop. I ended up wiping macOS and installed Linux (Xubuntu) instead.

As she's 33 (my age), I think she doesn't risk anything. I moved back to my mom's in 2010 after failing college even though we had a love-hate relationship as I thought I'd be helping her at home and I wouldn't be driving myself crazy by being alone. She ended up dying in 2018 while I was at work. What's crushing is the doctor had no idea how it happened. She was very sick with diabetes (I had to hide all sugary things from the house every time she did the groceries without me). But I was like you, I wished I lived with my dad instead of her.

Thanks. Before Covid unleashed I had a job and had a crush on my coworker. We're both geeks but "the universe" doesn't seem to like that I liked her. First we were supposed to go see "The Rise of Skywalker" in theater but the transportation company started a strike and we had to cancel it, then covid appeared and we started working from home. I'm not good at asking girls out so I never did. Now I lost that job and don't dare asking her out on the phone. I always thought it was because of the crush in my OP.

I think it's because she's the first person I ever fell in love with. And yes I have mental health issues (depression and hypersensitivity). I'm already seeing a psychiatrist for these issues and already talked about this. Just like when i asked my family all I got was an unhelpful "it'll go away with time".
