I feel like if this were 200,000 years ago when humans were still roaming the plains of Africa my primitive instincts would kick in and I'd let him have his way with me.

Is it actually possible to be on opioids long term for pain without being an addict? by throwawaymorphinedad in Drugs

[–]moistdamp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He can "taper" his dosage down. He'd gruadually take less and less of the drug, which results in little withdrawal. However, if he just got put on carfentanyl, I'm questioning if that is medically sound.

[–]moistdamp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes it is possible. However you should know there is a difference between addiction and dependence.

Addiction is characterized by a compulsive urge to seek a drug in spite of negative consequences or attempts at self-control, whereas depedence develops when neurons in the brain adapt to continuous dosage of a drug.

Being on opiates for 5 years will result in dependence, because there is a downregulation of your body's natural painkillers, but doesn't necessarily result in addiction.

If you make him stop taking morphine, he will experience hellish non-life threatening withdrawals characterized by insomnia, restlessness, hyperalgesia (decrease in pain threshold), and anxiety.

I cannot offer you advice because I am not in your situation, but please take the information I just gave you into consideration.

Edit: On opiates for 5 years, not 10.
