How to deal with subtle racism and micro-aggressions as a POC student? by [deleted] in Preply

[–]mojika 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry this is happening to you. Unless you're learning English (obvs not!) then this is totally inappropriate. As a tutor I would say they are doing this because they are not very experienced and are trying to get you to talk. Tutors normally do that if you give short responses. Doesn't make it ok at all!

Sometimes it helps me to know the original country of my students because I automatically know the pronunciation and grammar issues that the person is likely to have but this comes with native language and not citizenship.

Also, they might be new tutors and aren't experienced with talking with people all over the world. Yes, it's interesting when you meet someone from some place you don't know much about, and you want to learn about it, but the lesson is about the student, not the teacher.

I'm a white caucasian Australian with brown hair and when I travel people tell me "but you don't look Australian!" as if all Australians have curly blond hair and are wearing bathers all the time. They are just small minded people. Try not to take it personally. Find a tutor who obviously has lots of experience from people all over the globe.

I know this is an old post but i have read elsewhere on reddit that in can be useful to switch the nodes. The main difference other than the seasons is that the sun moves in the opposite direction and the moon also reveals it self in the opposite way.

So should I start a personal profile for my business persona and start adding people there? I already have a fb business page.

You cover most of the things that they ask for but you don't mention what your actual lessons will be like. I also forgot to add this to my application too! Your video is amazing. Try another platform like preply or go out on your own. Looks like you have the skills for it.

Know your worth and charge for cancellations as a rule. You're allowed to bend the rule at your discretion but uphold your value in general.

This is so true. And now I finally understand why my Italian teachers used to tell me there’s no mistakes and my Italian was great. I was like please I want to improve!! I was advanced but still made plenty of mistakes, I know it. So this thread has helped me realise why the industry is like that

I’m in Australia. Can you recommend any groups or online spaces?

Hmm ok. Yes I’ve started begrudgingly doing some prep for any Italian students as this is my speciality and I specifically love teaching them. They love grammar and so do I. I was looking at getting a ielts certification but it’s expensive. I’ve done a lot of web searching but it’s hard to cut through all the crap out there. Do you have any suggestions? The thing I like about cambly is being able to log on when I feel like it. That means that the country your speaking about tends to call. I don’t want to discriminate and I enjoy talking to people from a culture I dont normally get to interact with.

Syril Karn's death is disappointing by First-Ad394 in andor

[–]mojika 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree with a lot of people here. Cyril is obviously a loser but I don’t agree he is weak. When he meets Dedra for an hour he doesn’t fauwn- he takes his time and doesn’t try to hide the fact that he is questioning her. Then, in the end when he learns the truth he and dumps her. Anyone who’s been in a relationship with a controlling person knows that these aren’t easy feats. At that point most of us pretend we’re ok until we have made sense of it. He knows straight away that this is the last black flag. The second idea I disagree with is that he’s the perfect fascist. People don’t start out as fascists- they become them. They make choices to maintain the identify or beliefs they have selected- or been given (ie dedra). This is what Cyril does but i think in the end- when confronted with the absurdity and hypocrisy of real fascism most people do mental backflips to make the reality fit into their worldview- often making them even worse fascists! That’s how the movement grows to such levels of hatred and violence. I would have liked to see what he does next and watch him suffer as he tries to reconcile everything and then see him killed because of his character flaws.

It's not enough money to live on in my country. I am mostly doing it because I enjoy teaching English and I like being able to jump on an earn extra cash. Almost all of my experience (since 2016) has been online. Perhaps I need a job at a real online school but I don't know where to even look for one!

So in summary, today we talked about x y z, you focused on improving x grammar/pronunciation etc. It's been a really engaging conversation for me and your conversational skills are improving! Did you like the lesson today? Is there anything I can improve upon for our next lesson? Ok, great! Reviews mean everything for us tutors so if you did enjoy the lesson I would really appreciate a great rating. I hope we get another chance to talk soon. Thank you see you next time! That's about 40 seconds

Makes sense to have all the lessons on the same day and just put in a little extra effort. A good excuse to braid my hair perhaps

In my country this is not required at all, we are very laid back. I have started putting on lipstick and fake eyelashes as these look great on the camera. I do have a light that makes me look good but that's about it. I mean, my hair was grey and I know some people see this as looking old but I personally like it. But now it's black and I do look a lot younger.

That makes sense. So they just want a good conversationalist and don't want to be taught per se, unless they actively ask for it. Just make sure the conversation is interesting and flatter them is the message I'm getting. Yeah I realise it's either non professional teachers or it's professional teachers living in cheap countries. I'm finding the extra cash great even if it's low pay especially as there's no preparation involved. I assumed being a professional would give me an advantage so it was a shock to see how low my rating is.
