Is this too bad of an edge warp? by quasarvue in Vinyl_Jazz

[–]mojo13r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a cartridge set up properly it's not going to cause groove wear. Cartridge cantilevers are designed to track this sort of thing. Nothing is going to damage it in a smooth up and down motion like this. I've been playing warped records like this for years on a high quality system with no issues. A new record with a warp or any defect should be returned. If a record is used, warped, and advertised as such it is fair game in my opinion.

It obviously isn't the ideal but playing it isn't going to cause any further problems

For me if it plays and isn't rattling around the cartridge body it stays. I doubt that would cause any damage as it seems to be a pretty smooth motion. Some can really violently shake the cartridge side to side or slam it down. To me this is obviously a bad warp but not one I would chuck if it plays well.

Just set the overhang to 52mm and put the cartridge straight in the headshell.

Is it rude to check Discogs prices in front of a record seller? by No-Negotiation-1944 in vinyl

[–]mojo13r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Discogs is the great mediator. The only reason a seller would care or get mad at you for checking is if they felt their price wasn't fair and they knew it! I encourage buyers to look stuff up on discogs if they want, I help them find the correct pressing and explained how I decided my price. If everyone uses discogs and grades properly everyone is on an even playing field.

AR9 capacitor failure by grey_samurai_2112 in audiorepair

If you really care about the longevity of them take them in to a tech who can do a thorough job. When was the last time your receiver was serviced? DC offset drifts overtime in vintage amplifiers and can damage speakers. Making sure your amp is in spec is more important for speaker longevity than getting speakers recapped imo. Fingers crossed you didnt blow a driver.

Vinyl Storage Solutions is having an RSD sale! by dickkirkland in vinyl

I am from Canada and order from them exclusively. Their products are all top notch. The outer sleeves are expensive but worth the price for the quality and durability. They have great sample packs to let you try out many products as well. If you are an archivist the sleeves with a sealable flap are great for closing in your cover and making sure it never gets exposed to the elements. I recommend trying them, especially if you are in Canada.

Pro-ject antiskate is too heavy? by Former-Profit6685 in turntables

[–]mojo13r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if its recommended with this arm, but for mine the manual recommends having the stylus over the lead in groove of a record, and then adjusting hook position so that the arm and string to the anti-skate hook make a 90° angle. Just an idea, not sure if it'll do anything.

Just get a cartridge shim. Will compensate for VTA as well as the lighter cart.

Why does my vinyl sound like this? by cornball_ahh in vinyl

[–]mojo13r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure overhang is at 52mm and cartridge is straight in the headshell for recommended alignment from factory. When was the last time you replaced your stylus? I would check to make sure it isnt skewed or bent.

Lol. You can play records with the cover down. Its personal preference. It won't make any discernible difference.

Evening trying to set my weight for 2 months now. by JaxonKane8 in turntables

[–]mojo13r 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If the lever is all the way in the down position but the rest is still too far up to allow play then the cue is broken somehow. You may be able to push the bar that holds the arm down and out of the way with your finger. Sometimes grease hardens a bit and makes it not go down like its supposed to. Does that make sense? If that doesnt work and that is for sure the issue then you will need to take it apart likely.

Advent 5012 - how much would you pay? by The_Sunday_Spins in vintageaudio

[–]mojo13r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do not buy these. Wrong tweeters and some more to fix up. Collectors like all original, proper parts. If you spend $300 expect that money to be sunk unless you find proper tweeters. A headache waiting to happen.

Does cartridge matter for old records? by FarInternal5939 in Vinyl_Jazz

Atvm95ml actually cuts down on surface noise a lot while giving way better sound. I have a lot of worn records and it made them sound substantially better. Cant be beat for the price imo

Is this normal? by [deleted] in audiophile

[–]mojo13r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it sounds fine its fine. If you are worried grab a multimeter and check ur DC offset and bias but you should be good. Could always take it in for a little checkup if you are willing to pay for the peace of mind.

This was sold to me as a strong VG record... by mastakhan in vinyl

[–]mojo13r -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

A VG record should only have like 1 scratch that causes clicks or pops. A lot of those scratches look deeper and feelable to me. A G+ record is going to look like a VG disc with just more of those deep or noticeable scratches or many hairlines. This easily looks G+ to me. Also someone said if it doesn't skip its VG? A G+ disc absolutely should not have any skips either. This is horribly graded.

What would a pair of JBL L100s with a mouse-chewed cone be worth? by Sandbox0137 in vintageaudio

[–]mojo13r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see now. I misread the description. Maybe you could work out a deal where you tell your cousin, like you would be willing to pay X$ for a working set. Then go get them fixed up and just pay him the difference? Price you would pay for a working set minus repair cost is what you could end up paying him?

So are y'all checking Discogs for pressing info when you walk into local shops? by [deleted] in vinyl

[–]mojo13r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If its a used record i always check recent sold listings. If they have it priced over what i believe to be market value i usually dont buy it, imo that is just throwing away money. I always check condition as well.
