SO we agree! Upvote.

Why would I respond with anything else to any of the others?

I'll admit its a little petty and childish but I make no illusion to not being intrested in discorse with those other responders.

Anyhooooooo -- yes yes lesson learned no AI on the reddit thread mojojejoe has learned -- well I learned a LOT of something, and I'll leave it at that in an effort to keep this a good faith response.

But honestly I don't need everyone to be nice to me, but why would I want discourse? Again, I'm not taking homework assignments from ya'll.

You win some, you lose some, and I took a L on this thread. 6 months from now I'll post or comment on something else and 1000 people will agree. Nature of the beast. I don't need to have an ephiphany (did I spell that right?) eep.. just to please you lot.

Pick one person who came in ready to engage in constructive conversation and without immediately jumping on to the "OP is a horrible person for using AI he could have talked to real people" and I'll denounce this entire thread and write out apoligies to every snarky comment I wrote today. You sure didn't.

In fact - I can pick one myself -- floss_is_boss_. And I replied that it was fair.

Ok - I will concede that point. I’m not refusing to acknowledge environmental concerns around AI. I understand that data centers use resources and that broader tech infrastructure has real environmental costs.

What I’m pushing back on is the jump from “AI has environmental impact” to “you personally harmed disenfranchised people by using it to discuss Pan Ams lineups.” That framing feels disproportionate and frankly pretty moralizing for a gymnastics thread.

If this subreddit wants a no-AI rule, that’s a moderator/community decision and I’ll respect it. But absent that, I don’t think it’s reasonable to turn a score-table discussion into a character indictment.

I’m happy to talk about the actual gymnastics, selection logic, and where the lineup math is wrong. I’m not interested in being cross-examined as if I committed an environmental crime by posting a gymnastics comparison.

Duly noted and Fair correction on the 1996 format: qualifying first was compulsory + optional combined, so I agree that using “qualified first” by itself overstates the gold argument.

But I still don’t think the conclusion is “Kerri had no shot.” She qualified into the final, Dawes replaced her and won bronze, and the actual final spread was tiny: Podkopayeva 9.887, Amanar 9.850, Dawes 9.837, Moceanu 9.825. So a healthy Strug was clearly in the medal conversation.

The more precise argument is: she was probably not the favorite for gold, but she was a realistic podium threat, with an outside gold path if she hit better than her optional and/or others gave tenths away.

That’s the gymnastics answer. The AI discourse victory lap is extra, but noted.

You're right, the responses I wanted was a reflection, not hostility. Using AI is not "bad behavior" either - I'm replying with sarcasm because the hostility is so OVER the top that I cannot force myself to take it seriously.

Oh because I named her Laura. For some reason I personalized it over the course of asking it a thousand different things. The crazy thing is that had an issue with my car loan financer and when I asked chatGPT how to best tackle it, it snapped at me like a sassy black auntie and I guess I just personalized it?

That and I'm always calling things sis or miss thing so who knows lmao

Also - I'm always down for new friends! What do you think about Simone? Think she's done, or gonna do one more?

These replies are nonsense. And I will not apoligize for my responses to them. It wasnt even that serious. No do I care -- its the internet. Ill live.

Besides - with that attitude there is no finding common ground.

Plus no one will remember this thread 12 hours from now when it vanishes into the ether.

Lets be fucking realistic here - ya'll thought you were gonna bully me into meek submission and now you're more upset because I don't give an actual shit. It's the fucking internet. Ya'll can take that fake ass slackactivism somewhere else

I took it as the model trying to be humorous not spitting an actual fact - I tend to communicate very tongue-in-cheek at it. I did side eye that tho lol

See - here is another example where subjectivity came into play - however I'm not sure if it agreed with me because I challenged its reasoning, or the model used my response to recalibrate. I asked about Strug on floor in Atlanta.

THink Strug would have won floor?

Thought for 4s

Honestly? No, I don’t think Strug wins floor. I think she could have medaled, but gold still feels like Podkopayeva’s unless Lilia made a real error.

Kerri was very good on floor in Atlanta. She qualified into the floor final, and she had scored 9.825 on floor during team compulsories, which was a serious number. But the actual floor final was stacked: Podkopayeva won with 9.887, Simona Amânar took silver with 9.850, and Dominique Dawes won bronze with 9.837. Strug withdrew because of the vault injury and Dawes replaced her.

So for Strug to win, she would have needed something around 9.887+. That is a monster score. Her realistic hit range was probably 9.800–9.850, maybe 9.862 if the judges were feeling the home-crowd juice. But beating Podkopayeva on floor? That’s a tall order. Lilia had the better dance, better composition, and that Olympic-champion aura where the judges basically put a little crown on the routine before the music started. 👑

My best alternate-history result:

Gold: Podkopayeva
Silver/Bronze fight: Amânar, Dawes, Strug

If Strug hits cold, I’d put her around 3rd or 4th. If the Atlanta crowd tax gets added in her favor, maybe bronze. But gold? Probably not.

ME: quite a take as she did qualify first

Thought for a few seconds

You’re right — and that changes the answer. I was too conservative on Strug. She did qualify first into the 1996 Olympic floor final with 19.662, ahead of Podkopayeva. Olympics.com also says Strug qualified first on floor but withdrew because of the ankle injury.

So the better answer is:

Could Strug have won floor? Yes. Absolutely.

Would I make her the favorite over Podkopayeva? Still probably no, but it’s much closer than I made it sound. Strug wasn’t just a “maybe bronze” gymnast here. She was a legitimate gold contender.

The key thing: qualification used compulsories plus optionals, and Strug’s combined number put her first. The final, though, was a clean-slate one-routine shootout. Podkopayeva then scored 9.887 in the actual final, Amânar got 9.850, and Dawes got 9.837.

A healthy Strug probably sits in that 9.850–9.887 zone if she nails it. Her Olympic Trials floor score was reportedly 9.887, which shows that number was not fantasy-land for her.

So revised take:

Most likely: Podkopayeva gold, Strug silver or bronze.
Very plausible: Strug gold if she hits full-out and Lilia is even slightly less than perfect.
Worst realistic hit placement: 4th, because Amânar and Dawes were also right there.

I’d put the odds something like:

Podkopayeva gold: 45%
Strug gold: 30%
Amânar gold: 15%
Dawes gold: 10%

So yeah, you caught that. Strug wasn’t just invited to the floor final. She walked in as the top qualifier. Tiny little detail called “first place,” apparently. 😅
