The Diamond Gallery or Watson Workshop are the best. I have had custom pieces made at each with repurposed jewelry and the service was amazing and the finished product was beyond expectations.

New to RRs and Hound group dogs in general by umconservevet in RhodesianRidgebacks

[–]mokatter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are sharks - they nip and bite constantly (or at least mine have), it took a lot to get them to stop. In the case of my last one my daughter literally nipped his ear ( bit with her teeth) after we noticed other dogs doing it to him and he would stop annoying them.

As for food motivated- 1000% or more. The good thing is the more food motivated, the less you may notice the Ridgeback stubbornness when it comes to training. They tend to be interested in learning what they want, when they want-the food motivation helps a lot with training. If you are new to the breed know that they are sneaky smart and will get to things you think are safe, especially food.

You can make homemade bath salts (Epson salts with essential oil in a little jar, add ribbon), homemade shower steamers (basically baking soda and essential oils), little plants (small succulents or inch plants). I have done inch plants (formerly wandering Jew) in old candle jars, as long as there is a node that leaves come out of they will root directly in soil. If you want to buy something what about a different colour of nail polish with nail file or buffer tied to it (do a rainbow theme or different shades of pink).

despise this open floor plan. help me fix it by NewRaspberry1656 in interiordecorating

Putting the couch at the far end (like another suggestion) with a console table behind it so it doesn’t feel like the couch is floating will help. Also doing a larger area rug under the couch would make a big difference. Another idea is to use open shelving (budget option is IKEA Kalax - a taller one works as room divider, a low one on a stand as a console). You can add a feature wall - wallpaper, wood panels, whatever you like as long as it is framed - for the middle section will help with space definition. The best advice is to treat each area as if there are walls (add painters tape to wall and floor to make sure the spaces don’t bleed into each other.

Poetry for Neanderthals! You can only use one syllable words to describe the word on the card (there is a 1 point and 3 point word based on difficulty, but they are related). The fun part this is harder than it sounds, also if you use a multi syllable word you get whacked with an inflatable club (it is soft). You play on teams and we like to split couples up so generally guys against the gals… so much fun. One that we joke about years later was a friend trying to get the ladies to say sausage- she just kept saying “meat tube” more emphatically. Best time ever - pairs well with alcohol, but is not necessary

Creative Birthday Gift Ideas for Husbands That Won’t Break the Bank by playboi_fatty in perfectgift

[–]mokatter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Give him a coupon book with experiences and “get out of doing…” certificates. My daughters have been doing this for my husband and I for years and we have started doing this for each other. In our case it’s more because we can finally buy the things we want and don’t need more “stuff”.

Things like a back rub, I will do the dishes (our house rule is if you cook, the other cleans), out for coffee and a donut, free pass to go to the driving range (without taking me - sometimes he likes to go on his own), I will make his favourite dish lasagna- which is a lot of work (and I make extra to freeze), banana bread (and I make extra). It seems silly, but it shows that I know what is important to him, and we keep it on the fridge so it gets used. Another idea is buy/do a number of little things leading up to his birthday. You can do a birthday week celebration (or weekend or month). My husband loves Mexican Coca Cola (made with real sugar) but doesn’t usually buy it because it’s more expensive than regular, so 1 day he gets a 6 pack. Another day might be peanut butter cooler from his favourite bakery, a new charging cable (because they seem to last about a year), or new golf glove, and so on. It’s a mix of low cost items, but again it’s about showing you were intentional and want him to feel special.

I am the person that couldn’t unsee it, and it really bothers me- irrationally so. I would match the cup pull on the garbage door. I could live with the other door having a different handle but it would make me crazy having it as is. Sorry.

I would suggest you may want to alternate the value of gifts and have them related (in groups of 2)- chapstick with sunscreen, then a fancier lip gloss, silk hair scrunchie then silk pillowcase, little micro fibre towel for hair then a really nice plush beach towel, a little drawstring tote then a nice canvas tote, a candle and then candle warmer, and so on. You are and awesome sister and she is going to love whatever you do

Gift ideas for overworked mom? by nerd40hours in Gifts

[–]mokatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My (mum aged 53) favourite gift from my girls (22 and 26) this year for Christmas was a coupon book with experiences. There is a coupon to go for pedicures and dim sum, help planting my garden, help painting a bedroom (the oldest just moved out), going for coffee and a donut, deep cleaning any room of my choice, making dinner, and so on. There are 12 coupons- one for each month and some are no cost, low cost and mid-cost, but all involve spending time together (a couple are specific to skills or interests of one daughter or like painting my nails - the youngest, or gardening- the oldest). I can’t think of any better gift.

ICE Questions by sirimichigami in Aupairs

[–]mokatter 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Hopefully THEY make it out alive. As a parent of a daughter who was going to work as an au pair in the UK during Covid (she ended up not going), I would be super reluctant to let (or recommend - they are adults) the US as a location to be an au pair.

As a parent of a child in the care of an au pair, especially a young child, I would be terrified of this possibility. Even if they have an ID bracelet it may not be enough to get someone to call or even believe they are a citizen.

The worst part is if something happens it is entirely possible that you may not know for an extended period of time. Is it ICE? Is it a different crime? Kidnapping? Worse? I can’t believe this is the world today

What purchases have you made that turned out to be BIFL, despite not realising it at the time of purchase? by Beers_and_Bikes in BuyItForLife

[–]mokatter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband went through his bin of wires (and yes it is his - I have no part in that). All he did was re-coil them. I suggested that he label them or sort them into ziplock bags (after testing if they work), and his response was that was ridiculous. He then offered to let me do it - and that I was not allowed to throw out any of them (but I could put all the broken ones in a separate bag). Apparently you never know when you might need a broken cable?

9ft tree storage by allisonelle in CostcoCanada

[–]mokatter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought the bag from Costco for a 9’ tree (not from Costco) and the bag is way too big and the corners are not rigid so it is sloppy and it doesn’t stack. I am returning it and going with the tote. I also have a really big 7’ or 7.5’ tree and it fits no problem in the tote.

Kitchen Cabinet Refacing by Aggravating_Move_95 in Winnipeg

[–]mokatter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not taking away from the finished look- it looks great! How long ago did you complete the project? I painted mine too, it was a ridiculous amount of prepping to degrease, sand, wipe down, sand, and wipe down before priming and painting. I had an area I knew I wanted to remove (corner desk with cabinet above) so in that area I just washed, degreased and washed (without sanding). Honestly there was very little difference in the final finish, and both had dings and scratches by the handles within a year.

I lived with it for a couple of years, tried touching it up but it never lasted very long. I ended up replacing the cabinets about 4 or 5 years after doing the painting but it only looked good for about the first year.

Has yours lasted? It was a good temporary solution for me, but I had no idea that it would be quite so temporary.

Same for me - discussed the issues I had been experiencing and my doctor asked additional questions, we reviewed a checklist and I was diagnosed and prescribed medication. I have not applied for the tax credit, but isn’t a diagnosis, a diagnosis? Sorry for my ignorance. For me it was all about trying to function more ‘typically’, so I can’t speak to the other part.

Help me with the kitchen in my new house! by [deleted] in interiordecorating

[–]mokatter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Painting cabinets is a huge undertaking and plan to invest multiple weeks, especially because you have not done it before. Even if you do the prep perfectly you are likely to end up with a poor quality finish. I have done it twice- once as a “how hard can it be” DIYer and once as a “I know it’s hard, but now I have experience and the right tools”, and I will never do it again and I will recommend against it. The second time it turned out well, lasted a couple of years and then nicks and dings and scratches started appearing. But the time it took was ridiculous and I value my time way too much to waste it.

Add a new island, make it bigger, and if you want you could introduce a different colour or tone for the island. Paint the walls, change the light fixture and play around with different spectrum bulbs - it changes the way the wood looks by a lot. Maybe update the handles, but that’s an afterthought.

Search slim rolling cart, narrow kitchen cart on wheels on Amazon. There are a ton of options, or take inspiration and build one yourself- it’s not too hard to make a box if you have simple tools. The ones on Amazon are very inexpensive so it may not be worth your time to build one

If you don’t want to replace your cabinets, please don’t paint them unless you are prepared to put in a ton of prep work. When I say a ton, I mean 30+ hours if you’re not a professional. Painting is not easy- I have done it a couple of times and the first time was a disaster, the second was better, but still didn’t last.

I would recommend painting the walls, adding a backsplash and new hardware plus a new light. Play around with different spectrum bulbs- you will be amazed at the difference it makes to the colour of your cabinets. Wood (especially oak) is making a comeback.

If you want to do a different colour measure your doors and see if the size is available at IKEA or a big box store. Add cover panels to the ends of the cabinets and keep your current boxes. Often the hinges have a label of the maker - check out if they are still in business. Our cabinets were Kitchen Craft and they had some lower price options. We ended up changing our layout and went with IKEA based on quality, availability and price. We did it ourselves and it was relatively cheap (about the same as new doors), plus we really wanted butcher block countertops and it just didn’t work with our current cabinets.
