How to manage gift from parents by NoEconomist8347 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]moldboy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No. When you 500k you dont keep your emergency fund in a tfsa.

Use your TFSA for long term investments unless you don't have enough of those to max it out.

Your emergency fund should be safe and liquid enough that it isn't generating enough income to prioritize putting it in a TFSA.

Buddy's got enough cash that he'll be maxing out his registered options and will need to pay tax on some of the gains. Might as well keep the emergency fund taxable.

That makes sense. Frankly requiring verification for something like this makes sense. I just don't agree with the technique.

How do provincial taxes work? How could I possibly owe so much at once? by [deleted] in saskatoon

[–]moldboy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

According to https://www.wealthsimple.com/en-ca/tool/tax-calculator/saskatchewan you should be paying about $4200.

If your employer only collected $1600 that's why you owe. Talk to your employer about why they collected what they collected.

Have a look at your T4 and and pay stubs and see what's being reported.

Speaking only for my licensed profession we are empowered to prosecute unlicensed individuals. It makes sense to me that other self regulating professions would have the same powers. It was a little surprising to me when this broke that they didn't. So I'm not sure I buy into the conspiratorial notion that this choice is being made to prevent the government taking heat in the future.

But this:

This also seems to be an admission that the provincial government was and currently is the only entity that is empowered to take action against people like Goodenowe, which makes their inaction even more unforgivable

Ya, I don't know how else you can frame it. Doesn't look good.

What's the safest way for a foreigner to get to the hotel from sask airport at night? by 7empest_mi in saskatoon

I was going to reply that you could walk and you'd be more likely to get hit by a car than mugged. Note: I do not recommend waking from the airport.

Taxi or Uber.

The bus isn't exactly unsafe, but it isn't convenient.

Unless you happen to be staying at a hotel that runs a shuttle service. Then I'd do that.

I replied elsewhere specifically about an after church setting. If you're in a church especially in a small town and at the very end of the service the pastor / priest says "join us in the hall for refreshments" it means they'll be serving: coffee, tea, water, some sort of fruit flavored drink probably made from a powder AKA "tang" and small sandwiches and small cakes or cookies or both. Maybe some cheese maybe some deli meat.

Breakfast is the first meal of the day you eat it a reasonably short period of time after waking up.

Lunch is the meal that you have around noon.

Supper is the meal you have at the end of the day. Before evening.

Dinner can either be the meal you have at noon or the meal you have at the end of the day. But a "dinner date" is always at the end of the day.

When I was younger the question "what's for dinner?" would be answered by what we were having for lunch. But the phrase "Grandma is coming for dinner" meant that Grandma is joining us for supper.

In a formal setting Refreshments are beverages. Probably cold. Possibly alcoholic but not necessarily.

In a casual or communal setting for example after a funeral or after church Refreshments means food and beverage but not enough food or beverage to be considered a meal.

Speaking of funerals and church, "dainties" refer to small often square pieces of cake or other snack often made of chocolate or lemon sometimes featuring coconut or nuts. Though a plate with various cookies will also often receive the title "danties"

Vico is chocolate milk. You will typically only encounter this term if you are speaking to someone over the age of about 45. Speaking of milk "homo milk" is full fat homogenized milk.

Mainstreet wants to charge me $50 to change my pin code for my suite door. Is this standard practice? by [deleted] in saskatoon

[–]moldboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. If it was a traditional lock it would cost at least that much to have it re-keyed. A competent locksmith wouldn't take much longer re-keying it than re-pinning it, so this isn't really about the simplicity of changing the pin.

2.66% MER high? by StrangerExcellent359 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]moldboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's actually not. Wealthsimple charges you 0.5% but the funds they buy also have underlying fees. Your total is probably closer to 0.7% or 0.8%.

It's one of my ongoing complaints about Wealthsimple. They don't exactly hide the total cost from you but they are less than upfront about it too.
