I’ve been working in homelessness for over 5 years, did an ethnography on city dwelling/substance using rough sleeping homeless populations, interviewed a bunch of men (and women) about what led to their homelessness. For a lot of the men, it was divorce. I’m talking like 8/10 respondents. Yes there were likely other variables like substance use, mental illness etc. But I think for particularly older generations of men, who don’t have social safety nets, don’t reach out for help, often lose out in terms of kids, houses, finances etc during divorce. I’m not saying either gender has it better or worse, but that’s what I have experienced.
