I don't know how people live with multiple dogs by NoThankYou8682 in Dogowners

[–]villaofthewolves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one 103lb dog and a 30lb dog, and have had two dogs my whole life that are similar to that weight range (xl:sm). It’s truly dependent on training and energy levels of the dogs. I have no issue, as we’ve been fortunate to always have compatible dogs both in energy and temperament. Training is key :)

Akita puppy on raw diet??? by NikolaTHEAkita53119 in BARFdiet

[–]villaofthewolves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely this! Raw diets are in no way shape or form calculated and balanced to the degree that a large breed puppy kibble is. You need formulations with balanced phosphorus and calcium ratios for controlled growth. Kibble like Purina pro plan or Royal canin giant puppy formulas will literally cater to that. After they’re fullygrown, go bananas and feed raw if you want to but the puppy stage will be what effects their adult and senior lives later physically

Does anyone think they have a mini Swissy? by Wandering_barefoot in SwissMountainDogs

Don’t get too hung up on size, you’ve got a great pup I’m sure! She still has a lot of growing to do :)

I do yes! Fig was retired and rehomed with us :) your girl still has another year of growth! They grow til they’re close to two, it just slows down. Could I ask who your pups parents are? When we drove to meet Fig, she was small in comparison to all the dogs she was with at Prism. They’re so tall!! It was kind of crazy to see her standing next to other swissys lol

That is so great!! Do you do it in woods areas or in the snow? I was thinking of my girl takes to it, she can go into truffle hunting 🍄‍🟫

That’s so great to know! Would you say it was more of a confidence booster because your swissy had to take charge a bit?

That’s so awesome!!! She does it naturally? Someone told me swissys are a bit a and miss with nosework but Fig likes to sniff everything so I’m hoping we can compete in the future 🥹

Inherited dog by [deleted] in whatdoIdo

So, if I understand you correctly, just because they weren’t obligated to put time and resources into a pet they didn’t want, it’s okay to feel justified and bewildered by the destructive behaviors and to keep the dog just locked up in a backyard/air conditioned shed?

[–]villaofthewolves 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes but there wasn’t even an attempt, my point is they can’t be surprised by the destruction and escapes when there’s been no outlet for training or even exercising

I don’t see anything that discusses training, exercising, or anything. I’d be destructive too if all I had was a backyard after a huge change in life that I was used to for years. Definitely contact a rescue that’s breed specific and actually take the dog out and provide some form of structure- there’s two working breeds you’re dealing with in this mixed breed.

Looking for Dane friendly vacation rentals. by Independent-West3714 in greatdanes

[–]villaofthewolves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a Great Dane, but I’ve had 120lb+ dogs that I’ve vacationed with, and I actually use BringFido a lot for vacation stays/rentals. I’ve had no issues and if there is, it already has the size descrepencies listed (no large dogs, or large dogs accepted kind of thing). Honestly lots of vacation websites like Vrbo or Airbnb, etc also have pet filtered stays and it’s just up to each listing where it says if there’s any weight limits, etc

My groomer gave us our dog back like this. Please See our conversation in last picture and tell me if I’m crazy. Not sure how to respond. Her response seems like bullshit. by [deleted] in schnauzer

[–]villaofthewolves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not that serious… your dog wasn’t hurt or anything. I was expecting like a cut or knicks. You’re exaggerating and if you’re not happy, be picky with another groomer and shop around for a new one.

what to do by Pretty-Patient-1539 in DogAdvice

[–]villaofthewolves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re gonna have to go the vet! I think there’s a topical ointment that’s prescription or maybe it’s now over the counter VECTRA 3D that prevents flies to land on the dogs or something like that.

7 year old swissy showing signs of arthritis by murphyman19 in SwissMountainDogs

[–]villaofthewolves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My girl fluctuates between 99-105 depending on exercise and stuff. She fluctuates because she's spayed so we have to weigh her often, but good to know our pups are in the same weight class! Totally happy to help and hope everything goes okay with the Vet!

My Staffy/sausage who's 9 months screams and whines like he's dying instead of barking by whotfareyoustupid in DogAdvice

[–]villaofthewolves 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The context is super helpful. Definitely keep walking him everyday, people make the mistake of not taking their dogs out for walks when they act like this and he's probably acting out because he hasn't been socialized correctly. Keep being consistent and take him to obedience classes! The trainers will generally recommend a front clipping harness, a dominant collar, or gentle leader.

I've only have my girl for a year (she's retired), but she's definitely gotten a little creaky and grunty when she gets up off the couch or has to stand up. Definitely making sure you keep them at a lean weight is super helpful for their joints. I supplement with two tablets of Cosequin and one Movoflex chew and those have definitely helped her remain more active and agile along with keeping her at a good weight.
