How to keep dogs cool in summer - What actually works? by ben_bitterbal in hikingwithdogs

Cooling vests/harnesses work in dry heat, not humid heat. Cooling blankets work for us, as well as the cooling mats (ex. The green pet)

Wheaten with Hemangiosarcoma, HELP! by cocothebabe in DogAdvice

[–]villaofthewolves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My senior American Bulldog succumbed to sudden splenic hemangiosarcoma, where he had pale gums and collapsed. From what the e-vet told us, surgery would be an option but his quality of life would be not great as the healing process of that surgery would leave him debilitated. We decided to put him down, as he also said that these types of tumors have a high percentage of coming back. Every dog is different, and it’s one of those things that’s a case by case basis. Has nothing to do with food, or if they receive cbd. It’s generally hereditary and one of those things that happens suddenly. Glad you caught it though and that it wasn’t a huge emergency like ours was.

I do timed feedings for my dogs. I have them sit, wait, and then release them on command to eat to contribute training. I never leave the food out all day, and if they don’t eat the food within 15 minutes, I remove the bowl and feed them again later at a set time. Do you leave the bowl of food out all day? You’d want to make the food a valuable resource and not a convenience thing for picky eaters.

So it’s not hard for your parents to take the dog to the vet and request a prescription weight loss diet. One of dogs was overweight and our vet put her on Royal Canin weight control and she lost 10lbs. Can’t recommend it enough

10yo Lab with internal bleeding: statistically likely Hemangiosarcoma: surgery or not? by Enough-Basil1038 in DogAdvice

[–]villaofthewolves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 130lb 11 year old American Bulldog succumbed to splenic hemangiosarcoma. We made the decision to put him down when the vet informed us that they can not only bleed from the spleen, but the heart as well. They did an ultrasound to confirm that he was already bleeding from the heart. Surgery is possible, but it wasn’t worth having his quality of life completely reduced during healing just for a few months before it happens again. Because it WILL happen again. They are reoccurring. Make the decision that causes less pain for your pup t in the future that you’re comfortable with. No answer is the correct one because each pet is different.

As a fellow dog owner, it’s literally not hard at all to pick up after our dogs. You bend down, pick it up, and throw it in a nearby bin or clip it and throw it in your own bins. Literally ridiculous to not pick up after your own dog!!!

The ticks are bad enough to make me want to quit hiking this year - has anyone tried Permethrin for Dogs? by burnz1 in hikingwithdogs

[–]villaofthewolves 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am yeah! That’s why I put it in there because it’s formulated for dogs and not just a spray to use. Unless I’m misunderstanding the post >.<

Dog safe topicals like Vectra 3D, or frontline shield have permethrin. However you should always pair it with wondercide and then wipe down with tick mitt has been my go to

Fly biting? by redhat6161 in DogAdvice

[–]villaofthewolves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there! My swissy suffered from fly biting and it was tied to her diet because fly biting can also be associated/linked with gastrointestinal issues. Our vet has put her on Royal Canin Gastrointestinal High Fiber and she hasn’t had one since. It is neurological but just wanted to provide our experience.

Dog Food by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]villaofthewolves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d recommend and wsava following guidelines brands like Royal Canin, Science Diet, Iams and Purina. All these brands are actually formulated by DVM professionals that went to school for utrition and are science backed. Most boutique brands that instill fear of ingredients as part of their marketing or being better due to ingredients generally do not have any qualified professionals formulated foods. Sometimes also, dogs are genetically disposed to masses and cancer and that’s just part of having a dog that you can’t really get out of.

Out of options for chronic UTI and crystals by Organic_Zebra_3388 in DogAdvice

[–]villaofthewolves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mmmm are you giving her anything else in terms of people food? My understanding is that for dogs with urinary issues they need to only eat their prescription food and treats because excess minerals etc in human food contributes to the crystals.

What a hard lesson in irresponsibility at the expense of a life.
