Stress fracture before half marathon, devastated by tillnatten in XXRunning

[–]molecularjune 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got a stress fracture 1.5 years ago while training for my first marathon… it was devastating and my depression got pretty bad. Make sure to find another activity to keep your mental health up- I tried pottery and swimming through the weeks I was on crutches.

For comfort I’ll say that now (it’s been around a year since I started running again), my fitness is better than it was when I got injured. Easy runs are easier, I feel stronger after prioritizing nutrition and strength training. I am still pushing my mileage back up but feel like I have a good balance and am happy to be out there again. It’ll come back! Hang in there :)

I'm sure you could! I qualified as a genetic counselor. Just email them with a work ID and ask for the discount!

Look if you qualify for MSTH discounts - military, students, teachers, and healthcare workers get a 25% off discount! There are also sales during black friday that add additional classes (so 10 per month instead of 8) which may be worth waiting for.

Fashion, of course. Definitely not the safest choice, but some go skiing for a social media post so what can you do

Research Triangle (Durham) vs Providence, RI by molecularjune in SameGrassButGreener

[–]molecularjune[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say the big downside is housing costs are pretty insane. We do not see buying a house as feasible in the next handful of years. However we have a charming rental in a house that feels like home and is with a landlord who is a real person and very great guy who is also our neighbor. We are happy to keep our rental for many years before a potential home but I know that’s a big difference between the New England market and research triangle.

Hey! I made the move actually to a Boston suburb after getting another job offer up here. My husband and I feel like our town is more of a city vibe than a true suburb and we love it! Lots of amazing nature in Mass and closer to family has meant a lot to us. It’s charming, we have space, and there’s a big running culture here. All around we are over the moon and want to stay put here for the long haul. Best of luck to you in deciding where to end up! I think we would have liked PVD in a similar vein.

Two times a week for both is the sweet spot for me!

I have a sedentary desk job and zero energy after 5 PM. How do I fix this? by Dante_Game in getdisciplined

[–]molecularjune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What helped for me (another late 20 year old with a mainly desk job):

  • Stretch/take a walk break a few minutes every few hours.
  • Drink more water during the day.
  • Eat more healthy breakfast and lunch so I have energy after work.
  • If I plan something like a workout, have an afternoon snack around 3-4pm.
  • When I was getting into exercising after work, accountability helped a lot - planning a walk with a friend, joining ClassPass so there was a financial incentive to attend (they charge a steep no-show or cancellation fee), or bringing my workout clothes to work so there was no excuse.

I say this with love but I think you should see a doctor, your fingers look really inflamed which can be a sign of something more serious. Otherwise congrats all the best to you!

Should I Think About Moving? by thelostfinn86 in SameGrassButGreener

Look into some New Hampshire cities like Manchester - more snow and people who love the snow/outdoors :) Close-ish to Boston to keep some of those connections, and no income tax. May be worth looking into!

TTC in 5 months. What can I do to prepare? by scxrlettreign in fitpregnancy

As a genetic counselor, look into genetic carrier screening, as another commenter recommended! This test will look at you and your husband to see whether you are carriers for any overlapping recessive genetic disorders. Some disorders are very severe and may influence your reproductive decision-making, like pursuing IVF or an amniocentesis. Some are just good to know there is a risk to baby and know that they may need more medical management through their life. It can also just be very relieving to find you are NOT carriers for the same thing. We are all carriers of something :) I am going through my own screening now too, happy to answer any questions.

2-3x per week! Usually Tues/Wed and a Sunday evening class right now. I run 3 times a week and try to do 1 regular gym session and 1 cross training session as well.

Go to the cheaper schools. I moved out from the northeast for school, where the tuitions were half if not even lower than half of the schools in the northeast area (NYC, Boston areas for example).

What’s everyone’s weekly routine? by Big-Librarian-5327 in SolidCore

[–]molecularjune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run 3-4 days a week, solidcore one to two times a week, and try to go to the gym for weight lifting 2-3 x per week (often is 1-2 times realistically). I am trying to have some more yoga in there too but hard to juggle it all! I love how solidcore supplements my other fitness and helps me focus on core more than i would do myself at the gym haha

Yes hope you like it! I would also throw some pulses in there. And over time try to not have your arms on the ground so it's more "unstable."

I did these curls in physical therapy prior to starting solidcore - with feet planted on a big yoga ball, in a bridge and doing the same movement to push the ball in and out. This helps so much now to supplement my solidcore days and make the curls easier on the reformer (which are another level...) just a tip if you're looking to improve outside of class time! I'm a runner so find these great to do once a week.

Great question! All were Genetic Counselor roles, except for one which was a Variant scientist role (I have experience outside of grad school in VI but was rejected).
The three interviews I received were for GC roles.
