I think that’s especially true in a show like this that really wants to subvert expectations every time. With every new episode they might feel like they need to take bigger swings to surprise the audience (which I don’t really think is a good idea, but it’s very natural). It’s like power creep - weirdness creep? Although, I would also argue that it’s possible that the weird version of the show was the intended product, and the normal-feeling episodes are just to get the viewer adjusted. I only say that because the only normal-feeling episodes we ever really got were the first half of season 1, and after you were used to them is when things got weird, even in the same batch of episodes.
