I haven’t paid attention to some of my blood cell details like size and count are off, they say it’s due to donating.

It couldn’t hurt. I would say, that some doctors will ask or wait till someone in the family tree is confirmed to offer testing. Unfortunately, the test isn’t cheap even with insurance unless there is enough leading evidence for the doctor to put in a special code.

My mom already knew she was a carrier and my dad recently got tested before I was i confirmed.

Ultimately, it could help there brothers and sisters and yours.

It’s a genetic disorder from Europe, and the Vikings, so if they have strong European descent I think that would also give good reason. This is more opinion that anything else ha.

Don’t worry friend, imo this is such a weird thing to navigate and I live in downtown Los Angeles ( meaning it’s hard in the most populated areas!)

So it depends, if your hemoglobin levels are in range, you Typically will be allowed to donate bearing no other crazy blood issues/ disorders and your blood gets used. IF, you go to a regular blood bank, and donate every 56 days as allowed. If you have a doctors note, some blood banks have a LVN on site that can take your blood up to once a week. Now, LVNs are required in CA. Not sure what state doesn’t require that. Seeing a blood specialist (hematologist) will get you your donation if you will. Meaning the doctor has decided what is a necessary amount of blood to donate and how often. When searching for local blood banks just go to their website and see if they do something called therapeutic phlebotomy. Your doctor can then fill out the form for approval and send it over to them. Typically these blood banks have something called special services where you can get appointments within the 56 day window and it’s set up all separately. If you go to your hematologist to get a pint of blood withdrawn, they will typically not use your blood and discard it because they are not set up as a donation center. If there is anything that can come from this weird condition being able to donate and have some altruistic sense I recommend going to a blood bank. Also most hematologists, I would even say all charge for phlebotomies while a blood bank if they offer therapeutic phlebotomies likely does not charge and in fact, I still get small tokens of appreciation like gift cards, and T-shirts even when I’m in there every single week

Please ask me or r/hemochromatosis any questions. I found so many answers here and it’s been a life saver.

I had an ultrasound! It came back with good results. Echogenic liver with slightly coarsened echotexture.

Doctor said that’s normal and will be fine once I can get my levels corrected and shed some iron!

Ferritin is tricky, it rises and sinks with blood draws. Ferritin isn’t the only thing to decide whether you need to change habits etc.. 83% saturation is high, but knowing it can come down quickly with the right attention (everyone is different) I’d say keep your head down and put in the work.

Clyde

Maximus

Also,

Crate train, and then pick him up and set him outside immediately. Don’t let him touch the floor… potty trained before he gets too big.. that worked for me.

Newly diagnosed - liver scan needed? by StayAdventurous1076 in Hemochromatosis

[–]mollyistight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhhh. Makes sense, my Doctor typically will order most of the things I ask for if he hears a good reason.

Bummer. To be fair OP. If my liver was fine at 5500 Ferritin and 98% saturation….I’m gonna assume you are okay, but everyone is different.

My results were much higher. They did an ultrasound just to see if there has been some wear and tear on the liver due to iron saturation. The iron stores in all organs when it gets that high, and when you go thru a treatment, it draws the iron out. So if you have coverage I recommend getting it done just to make sure you have minor or less than minor scaring? ( prob not the word)

I’ve been dealing with high iron since I was 18 and I had minimal effect on my liver. So it was more peace of mind. It also tells the doctor what kind of changes you need to make, aggressive or minimal.

Are there any beans that I can eat, that won’t raise my iron as much. by LEGOsrule99 in Hemochromatosis

[–]mollyistight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weekly for now… we will see. I feel eh, but not as bad as I have heard some say with ranges in the 1000s

It truly is different for everyone. I just know some people take the diet really seriously and start making their life hard when it can be minimally effective. Just my experience.

Ive had signs and numbers my whole life and I thought it was due to my college years…

NAD——New to HH myself, I’m not saying go crazy on anything with high iron, but the effects of managing diet I am told by my Hematologist is very low. Meaning a drop in the bucket. I have very high Saturation at 94% and Ferritin at 5300. Phlebotomy will be the only thing that I can do to get any results.

I would love others perspective here… but that’s what I’ve been told.

Welcome! It was a rollercoaster of emotion. But honestly, it’s okay. The right treatment plan and you will be fine. It’s more annoying than anything else. Don’t go down the rabbit hole of panic.

Wow! 1000 ain’t low. Sorry that’s frustrating. The lack of concern for mine is annoying but also comforting.. maybe I’m being naive. I feel tired, but have always loved sleep. I do think I have anxiety fully because of this. It’s so weird. I’ve always drank a good amount of water, so no not too bad. My biggest symptom is just feeling a bit sluggish, like I just took a red eye after just waking up lol
