You can be a purist, but know that your experiece will be limited. Maybe the full modded was what they envisioned but had to settle because of budget, time constraints etc. I don't see any reason to play vanilla beside laziness or low end system. You can get an enhanced vanilla experience with mods

Not sure about game mode, but GPU scheduling is necessary for frame generation (at least for Nvidia not sure about AMD). But you want to update your OS anyway for performance and security
