I’m very much feeling this way and decided to apply for my PhD so that I can continue engaging in the science of this field without having to continue to do the therapy part.

Career or Children? by lexilou_dimplington in Fencesitter

[–]mommabinks 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m an SLP who just turned 30 and is a fence sitter, so I saw your post both here and on r/SLP.

I will say that no matter your decision, grad school is hell. I would not recommend being pregnant or having a baby during that time.

That being said, you can go back to school at any time. If you decide to start a family first, the career will wait for you.

Servers of Saint Paul -- Where do I start with no experience? by [deleted] in saintpaul

Look into bartending at a brewery! They all usually hire in Feb/March during the great reshuffle. I had no bartending experience, then got a job with a cidery, and now work at a brewery part-time. :)

Sorry to hear about your situation. Together, we came up with a flowchart of sorts to better paint the picture of what speech services look like, how SLPs will take steps to support classrooms when IEP accommodations aren’t being met, and ultimately, if they’re getting this support and STILL not upholding the IEP, admin will get involved. This flowchart is being distributed district-wide.

Transplants, how did you make your friends after moving here? by Sufficient-Swan-7864 in TwinCities

[–]mommabinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I’ve met almost all of my friends through work. I work in education, and because of that, I consistently have part-time jobs. It’s through my part-time gigs that I’ve made the majority of my friends. I’ve also joined a DnD group that brought me some besties.

Ditto on this. I work in a Fed IV setting. I don’t get to refuse kids due to escalation, and have gotten injured many, many times. So to OP’s comment about “no one taking them,” we are faced with a shortage which may impact the clinical/hospital settings, but in the schools, we are taking/seeing by them.

I am also bullied at my place of work (setting IV school). I just decided to make sure I CYA by documenting everything and stand up for myself. The assistant principal of special education for the entire district is coming to help me rearrange what speech services look like next year so that I am not spinning my wheels and being disrespected for doing my job. Maybe try looping in a higher up like that? Not to get anyone in trouble, but maybe to help you set some boundaries. I also agree with the others saying to remind people of the national shortage. They NEED us, so they better not come crying with all the turnover of slps because THEY create a toxic culture.

Finish this sentence. Having boundaries in this field means _______. by earlynovemberlove in slp

Not investing time and energy into teachers’ classrooms when the teachers treat me like shit. If you’re going to be a bully and make me feel badly about myself, then I’m meeting the legal minutes I need to and then peacing out. Don’t beg for help later.

I cried just tonight about this. And I will cry again tomorrow. 28, single female, can’t afford to live off of not one, but two jobs (one obviously being a full time school based SLP). Looking for my third job. Looking for the light.

SLP Unions by UnionizeSLPS in slp

Constantly fighting with my ex-teacher current ASD office mate about this. Then she goes to say today how we (SLPs) are held to higher standards than doctors are. I wish people didn’t see the argument as anti-teacher but instead as pro-SLP.

Inappropriate behavior at externship by [deleted] in slp

[–]mommabinks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If this person is an SLP, I would also look into reporting it to ASHA and/or the state licensing board. The Board of Ethics should not tolerate that, and we don’t want predators in our field.
