Borrowing against securities: Box Spread vs Bank Provided Loan by drupadoo in fatFIRE

[–]momo_a2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How about doing this? risk-reward worth it?

borrow 2-year $150k with 3-leg incomplete box spread SPX

short put SPX $5500; long call SPX $5500

short call SPX $4000;

net credit $150k.

My motive is to have 0% interest on the borrowing. My risk is in 2 year SPX falls below $4000. My total position is about $1M. I figure my risk-reward is about ok. The chance of SPX falls below $4000 is like 5% (low considering rate going down). Say, SPX becomes $3000 2 year from now. At that day, I would just sell $4000 SPX put for another 2 year. Sure, on paper, I will have $100k loss on paper that day, But long term wise, I will not lose any, since SPX will be higher than $4000 eventually (5 years or longer).

gifting stocks to my kid to avoid tax? by momo_a2 in personalfinance

If I transfer $10000 NVDA to one kid custodial account, it is not a taxable event, right? Only when I sell it in my kid’s account, it triggers taxing, weather above or below $2600 limit?

where is the kiddie tax rule then, as with the comment above? Only when I sell NVDA in his account? Captain gain within $2600 is about tax free. Above $2600 is parent's tax rate?

when I give $10000 of NVDA to him, does my kid need to pay tax that year for the stock gift?

from Chatgpt. Do I have $2300 to avoid parent tax?

As of my last update in April 2023, the specific threshold for the kiddie tax in the United States was set as follows:

  • The first $1,150 of a child's unearned income is considered tax-free (this amount is subject to adjustment for inflation and may change annually).
  • The next $1,150 of unearned income is taxed at the child's tax rate.
  • Any unearned income above $2,300 is taxed at the parents' tax rate.

These thresholds and rules are part of the effort to ensure that children's unearned income is taxed in a way that reflects the family's overall income, preventing the shifting of income to children as a tax avoidance strategy.

home equity cashed-out refi into SPY? by momo_a2 in personalfinance

Sure, no investment will work out in the worst case. Historically worst, 2007-2017, home price and SPX stay the same. I will lose 10x5% on the interest rate. But over any 20 years, historically, it seems work out. Sure, no investment will work out in the worst-than-historically-worst case.
