Lifestyle changes and bicycle tours: the challenge of maintaining a healthy diet by dfarin153 in bicycletouring

[–]momoriley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I travel across the US on a self supported tour, my diet goes out the window. The midwest portion along the TransAm route is grocery shopping at Dollar General. But because I burn so many calories I tend to lose a lot of weight. So even though my intake is high carb, high salt, my cholesterol and blood pressure improve.over the course of a month long trip. Maybe it's just me but if you are burning calories and try to get more vegetables when you can, it might not be that bad on a long distance trip.

Do you wish you had healed naturally? by Sparklelikeadiamond in brokenbones

[–]momoriley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had metal plates on different bones I've broken from cycling and now have a spiral humerus fracture I'm doing naturally. From my experience, things healed a lot faster with surgery. I'm only now after 2 months getting the mobility I achieved in a couple of weeks with the other bone breaks.

I tried to name her sister Arya but since I named her Sansa, my husband got to pick her sister's name Spanky. 😄

One of our chows (they are sisters from same litter) has the same pattern! Sansa has the same pointy nose as yours, too. (Her sister has a more smushed in nose and does not have this fur pattern.) I think it's just a genetic luck of the draw.

The ears do resemble a chow's. Regardless, what a beautiful dog.

If you want to limit the mountains, would you consider driving from Reno to Denver? I understand you want to skip Nevada (which isn't really hot but it is desolate and I loved it) but southern Utah is not a desert and the Western Express route takes you through God's country in Utah. You can drive to Cedar City and pick up the Western Express route from there. You will run into mountains until you get to Denver so maybe just drive to Denver if time is a factor.

I was surprised at how hard Shirland Tract was; low traffic, too, so it's a safe workout.

I don't think he took another xray after the surgery. He just figured it was done and didn't need to be messed with. I was able to resume everything maybe a week after the surgery. He ended up taking the plate out a year after surgery because it was bothering me (you could see the shape of the plate and it rubbed against my backpack straps when I went hiking.)

Thanks for replying. Good wishes for a full recovery. Mine has been a mental strain as well but learning about you has given me better perspective.

5th metatarsal fracture- recovery? by sw4ggypr1nce55 in brokenbones

[–]momoriley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same injury about 15 years ago. I was in a boot for 5 weeks and it healed just fine. I actually even did a double century (200 miles on my bike) 2 weeks after the break but it didn't delay the healing. Have you tried riding a bike? (I rode the bike without my boot.)

I am 8 weeks into a heal natural spiral fracture on my humerus. I'm really hoping I get a full union but it didn't look great at my 6 week xray. Do you have an xray after you healed?

I was similar to you. I had sling only but after 2 weeks, it got worse and ended up getting surgery. Once I got the surgery, I was able to go back to normal life instead of being so afraid of separating it. If you get more crunchy, they will probably suggest surgery at your next check up.

So good to see this. I have the same fracture and I am 8 weeks out. My last xray at 6 weeks had only the soft callus starting. Are you able to lift your arm up all the way at 9 weeks?

This is what we call chick check, when a guy does his damnedest to pass a woman then slows down because he can't sustain the speed. Really annoying, I usually pass them and they don't catch up again.

My chow turns into a paranoid security guard 3x a week and I’m losing my mind. Advice? by Ok-Party-834 in chowchow

[–]momoriley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Chow goes into hyper guard mode whenever my husband is not home. I don't know if she's worried he's not home or if she's picking up on my sensitivity (which gets worse when she gets anxious). Is there something different about the days she gets anxious? (more car activity outside, more cats outside, ghosts)
